Thank the gods for Leo's Taverna downtown. It's a toss up for lunch between going right downstairs from my building at work or walking up a couple blocks to get a delicious gyro. After contemplating lunch for a few hours starting at 9am I will decide the walk is worth it. Just avoid the "crazies" downtown. I personally LOVE to get the gyro value meal that comes with a gyro (of course) garlic salted crinkled fries and a drink all for around $9. If you're an HPU college student you get a discount but need to pay cash. Also there is a $10 min for cards, so if you do just get a gyro, instead of the meal, I like to add on some pita bread and hummus on the side as a snack for later. If you're ordering the value meal, I highly recommend calling in your order ahead of time because the fries, especially does take awhile. They're locally owned and by a family. I really should have read the menu and reviews better. Super disappointed. The veggie platter which included dips did not have any pita and the salad was coated in ranch; not very Mediterranean. Not to mention the dip portion was literally a table spoon. The spanakopita was incredibly tiny- like two bites but for $9, ridiculous. The falafel pita was very fried but the pita itself was good. I was excited to try out this Mediterranean joint in Downtown Honolulu because we don't have too many Mediterranean restaurants around Oahu. It's conveniently located on Bishop Street and has two entrances-one in the front and one in the back. Great thing is their seating area is huge for a downtown establishment. Not so great thing is their customer service and consistency...deal breakers if you ask me. Both times I've dined at Leo's Taverna, customer service wasn't horrible but they really don't do anything to exceed customer expectations. They are not very friendly but not awful to deal with either if you know what I mean-no frills. The menu is pretty extensive and I was pleased to see baba ganoush on the menu as it's not easy to find in any restaurant on the island. I've only ordered the Spanakopita (spinach pie) and it comes with a side salad. Their Spanakopita tastes pretty good and you get a decent amount of spinach and cheese but I was disappointed by the inconsistency in size. The first time I had the Spanakopita, the pie was pretty hefty and the second time I ordered it, the size was a joke-it seemed like a side item instead of the main course. Although I'm tempted to try other items on the menu, I'm hesitant to return because of the inconsistency and lack of great customer service. I'm not completely writing them off but I think I'll just stick to my normal go-to Mediterranean spot. read more

Not horrible not great either. I do want small businesses to succeed especially in these times, but for Mediterranean food this fell flat for me. Flavor of the hummus was descent, I'm not sure why there was a random head of iceberg cut lettuce next to my babaganoushe..plate filler? Pita bread was warm and soft which I loved, but the portions are small for takeout, which is what this review is based on. The gyros value meal and gyros plate are so tasty. I loved this place until today. My office ordered food in for a lunch meeting today. I ordered a chicken kebab plate. Just for thoroughness of review, the chicken was very dry, but this is not the point of my story. I also did get a decent allergic reaction (lips hugely swollen, throat tightening, among other things - don't worry I lived) to some spice used in the chicken or its garlicky sauce, which was unfortunate, but not Leo's fault. The real problems today were: (1) the long, long white hair I found in either my hummus or pita - don't know which bc I put the hummus on the pita and ended up with a long, long white hair in my mouth; and (2) a piece of a metal scrubber (you know the ones used to clean pots/pans) in my rice. Two unsanitary things in one plate. I don't even want to know what's happening there. Needless to say, I won't be back. Now the question is what to do when my office inevitably orders food from here again! Note re chicken dishes here: I had the rotisserie chicken here before and it was dry. My coworker had the chicken pie today, and she said it was dry. So if you do choose to eat here after my review (don't do it!), skip the chicken dishes - all dry. But seriously, don't eat here. Craving for spanakopita lately and didn't know where to buy it. I did a quick search for Mediterranean food and found that Leo's Taverna sells spanakopita. I also ordered a gyro sandwich, side of pita and hummus, and baklava. First, I would like to say that Leo's prices are really fair! I was expecting to pay a lot, but I was surprised at how fairly priced it was. The spanakopita, in all of its flaky goodness, was AMAZING. The gyro sandwich was delicious with the fresh veggies and all of that in a pita. One thing I am upset about is that I didn't order two baklava's. One for myself and one for my bf. We were fighting over the last bite! Can't wait to eat here again. My bf said he would like to actually go to Chinatown just to visit Leo's Tavern. read more

3 stars for an overall good experience, just as you would expect. Read below for a detailed review of each component. I ordered the gyro salad, which also comes with a side of pita bread. Gyro salad: This salad was a nice option when you want something filling that doesn't feel heavy. Lots of fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions. The salad is topped with slices of shaved lamb (same as you would get in the gyro sandwich). To tie it all together is a healthy serving of tzatziki dressing. As far as low carb options go, I enjoyed this salad. And being that I was looking for a low carb option, I didn't eat the pita this time but I've had it in the past and it's usually nice and soft. Service: The service is as you would expect. The girl who rang me up and the girl who gave me my food were both friendly. Ambiance: This place is quiet and chill. Although there is usually a bit of a line whenever I go (at least a couple of people waiting for their order), I usually don't see people eating there. It's probably because downtown folks are usually in the "grab and go" mentality. But should you want to eat there, there are several tables available for parties of 4. Overall experience: Though not typically my first choice for Greek/Mediterranean food, I enjoyed my gyro salad and would order it again. Good but not great. I'm kinda spoiled 'cause I've eaten real Greek in Greece and all over Germany where there's plenty of Greek places. For American Greek, it's okay. The owner, an Albanian, was helpful enough. I had a lamb shish, It was okay but not great. Ok, after management contacted me to give them another go my verdict still stands on the ranch flavored tzaziki sauce. I make a kick ass version of this myself, it's just too easy not to make. Disappointed in this, nothing's changed! So I've had falafel dishes 3 or 4 times here recently and the falafel is great! Not tried this too many places because I go carnivore most of the time. Falafel sandwich (pita) is finished with what I'm guessing is tahini and works but would go to the next step up with some zingy, cool REAL tzaziki. Falafel plate is sad with no tahini and a miniature side salad with that quintessentially *authentic* ranch tzaziki (snark). You get a deconstructed falafel sandwich which costs more and delivers less (except more in the styrofoam department, the sandwich is simply foil paper wrapped). read more

I can't say this impact serves the best Greek food I've ever had, because this has been the only Greek restaurant I've been too. But I'm pretty happy coming here. Anyways I only eat gyros here, but I thought to try fafael. Gryos: I love gryos so much it's so filling. The sandwich always feels so refreshing me to, prolly because I don't eat here often. Fafael: I don't like it lol. I have no idea how there are supposed to taste because it was my first time ordering this item. I have no other restaurant to come pair too. The hummus wasn't up to standard taste. I only ate the pita bread and salad that was in the plate. I won't order this again. Over all I'll be back I love gryos. The food was amazing! I got a gyro plate with extra meat and then a combo skewer plate with one skewer of chicken and one skewer of lamb. The food itself was so tasty and I'd def eat there anytime im in Chinatown over anything else! I LOVED their garlic paste thing they put in with the skewers. Not sure what it was but I'd drink it if I could! I also got the baba ganoush (sp?). Super tasty too. The location itself isn't difficult to get to if you're already downtown, but my situation was different. I went downtown specifically for this restaurant, so parking was difficult for me. I bought my food through Bite Squad--ordered the Gyro Value Meal, side orders of Pita Bread and small Hummus Dip. B.S driver delivered my food, but the order was wrong--it was the Gyro Plate. I'm not sure who's at fault here, whether it's B.S or the restaurant but I did get my issue resolved with B.S customer service... Anyway, this rating and review will be all about the Gyro Plate. The Gyro Plate comes with beef/lamb over basmati rice, a salad, hummus, and pita bread. The beef/lamb was seasoned well and thinly sliced. It tasted good and paired up well with the garlicky tzatziki sauce drizzled all over it. The basmati rice was ok, I didn't really care for it but ate it all up with the meat and tzatziki. The salad was a small portion of romaine lettuce with a wedge of tomato--wish it was diced tomatoes, and a dollop ranch dressing. Though salad was plain and standard tasting, the portion size should've been bigger. The hummus had a olive on top which was cute. It was very yummy with the pita bread. Walking in downtown waiting for a meeting, I saw Leo's. Having passed it driving on other occasions, I stopped to see what was available. The menu is that of a Greek restaurant; vegetable centric, with lamb and chicken (and a few beef selections). After careful consideration, I couldn't help going for the gyro. She brought me my Coke as soon as I ordered, so I knew it would be warm if my food didn't come fast. As I expected, it didn't. The wait was because of the fries, and definitely not worth the wait. They are the type of frozen that have ridges. How the companies that make these stay in business is beyond me. The seasoning they put on was good, but the texture and lack of flavor confirmed my expectation. Having said that, the gyro was excellent. If they are going to make the effort for the gyro, PLEASE fix the rest. read more

Yay! I love gyros. I was craving a gyro sandwich and I'm so glad they are in walking distance of work. Got some take out. The gyro was nothing short of great. It was a hearty sandwich with a big helping of meat, and fresh, crisp veggies (lettuce, onion, tomato). The sauce was so yummy as well I wish I had a little more. I've been here quite a lot and Love the half chicken plate only once did I have it a bit dry but honestly it was quite late in the evening near closing so I just must have come at a bad time. The Gyros Combo that comes with the Garlic Fries and a drink is usual fare for me if I don't get the Half Chicken it has always been pretty good I love the Garlic fries. Granted they are a bit gruff when you order but I just put that off as their personality... the service is pretty decently quick for the most part. The shop being on old Union Mall is old and maybe not the cleanest area but that doesn't bother me since I even go into Chinatown and there is much worse.
