Spinach and artichoke dip with pita bread
    Sandi W.

Having been on the road all day, my husband and I decided to try this restaurant as it is attached to the hotel where we are staying. We ordered a combo appetizer platter and the spinach and artichoke dip. The platter consisted of onion rings, french fries, mushrooms, cheese curds, and fried zucchini. At least that's what it was supposed to be. What we really got was about five pounds (slight exaggeration) of onion rings and a two or three pieces of the other items. When we pointed it out to our waitress, Allie, she quickly fixed it. Evidently they have a new employee and he is still learning. The onion rings were of the real thin variety and they were really good, as was everything else. I really liked the spinach and artichoke dip too. My husband got a beer and it was only $3.50, the cheapest beer he has gotten during our entire vacation. Had he gotten the soda that he normally gets it would have only been a buck, way cheaper than the $3 he has paid at every other restaurant we have eaten at during our vacay. This is a great place to eat and is very reasonably priced.

Low quality ingredients cooked well. Frozen section at walmart type food. A place that'll will remind you to pack a lunch.

Anyhow, we arrived and elected to sit at the bar versus a booth. Took a couple minutes to get noticed and we were asked to sit at the other end of the bar due to some clutter... Prices are very reasonable at this establishment. A flight was $7.50...if you were in WDM or Waukee, you would probably be looking at double that. They also brew their own beer and cider here; I'm not sure why that's not advertised heavier. Its called the "Gamble Block Brewery". I had Fear the Beard, the Baja Lager, the Maple Pumpkin Ale, and a cinnamon apple cider. The Maple pumpkin ale was delicious--the maple definitely hit on the back end. I was not a fan of the cider--they used a rather tart apple. The Fear the Beard (comparable to Blue Moon) and the Baja lager were OK. For food, I had the chicken tender basket with a 1/2 order of Texas Fries. I actually thought the ranch seasoning detracted from this dish--the queso was quite good and the bacon was plentiful. The downside to getting "sampler" versions of items was none of the accompaniments were included. My friend who got a full order of the Texas Fries was given sour cream with his food--mine did not. Also, on the beer sampler fruit wedges are served with the full size versions but not on the flight. The chicken tenders were very good and had the right breading/chicken ratio. The buffalo sauce packed a punch but was not obnoxiously spicy. The ranch that came with it was very good and was clearly made in-house. More of a 3.5 star review.

Instead of turning us away, they did everything they could to seat us, despite it being a busy Valentine's Day evening. All the staff were so kind and apologized to us profusely for the inconvenience/situation. We were given such great treatment and on top of everything, 2 free desserts! We were treated with such care and empathy, making the dining experience that much better. We had multiple servers and hosts checking on us constantly to ensure that we were ok. At the end of our meal after we paid, the server came back and provided us with 2 $10 gift cards for when we come back, which we will! I highly recommend Rube's not just for the food, but for the staff! This was the best dining experience I've ever had and will absolutely come back! Thank you Rube's!!

Especially when I got a $55 bacon wrapped Ribeye zero value in the shrimp. But my husband does not eat steak. So the options were Tuna, Pork Chicken Breast or the Shrimp. You cook the meal yourself. For me it was fine. For our friends I think they were a bit concerned about ruining a $50 steak. There should be some cheat sheet. Temp needed for different cooks of Steak or something. I expected a wedge salad. What we got because of our group size was a bowl of salad. The final feed back was about the service. My soda sat empty until the server Deb started picking up plates. Then she arrived and asked for all of us to settle our checks. There were 5 tickets at our table. She took 2 of the checks and credit cards back with her when she delivered the checks. She returned again and said she was trying to resolve an issue with tickets. Stood at the table explaining we had 5 tickets and she had only received 4 of the 5 back. One of the people at our table tried to explained she had already taken two of the tickets in the three she had in her hand, made five. Deb rudely shut him down telling him she knew what she was talking about. She never apologized or addressed her behavior. Mind you all this occurred after we had all tipped her and settled our bills. The service was less than expected for a dinner of $50 person. Customer service was really disappointing.

I fully expected the place to be packed as it appears to be pretty much the only show in town as far as a sit down restaurant. There was a please wait to be seated sign there as we walked in. We were greeted right away and seated in minutes. It's old school wood tables and chairs and I think there was a counter available. Ordering is done at the tables as well as settline your bill up with your server. Surprisingly the speed of service continued throughout the visit. After drinks we ordered the rodeo burger and fries, a tenderloin with chili cheese fries, and the garlic cheeseballs. The cheeseballs came with marinara and ranch. Fresh, hot, and fantastic! I've eaten a lot of tenderloins. Many that have been highlighted as Iowa Tenderloin Trail winners or participants... This is one of the better tenderloins I've had in the state! Obviously hand made, breaded, and fried. Not too thick and not too thin. Drained properly. Served with the essential condiments including the holy trinity (onions, dill pickles, and mustard). The gf liked her burger. It could have used more of the featured ranch and bbq sauce. The fries... Neither of us cared for them. Obviously hand made, but almost too thin and too greasy. We'd both opt for a different side next time. To each our own though. Almost every small town along this stretch of I-80 has a pub & grill. The menus vary a little, but are very similar in a lot of aspects. The quality of service and the cooks make the biggest differences. The Chuckwagon hit five stars in some aspects of both. Work on those fries and the flavor of the chili (horribly bland) and this review would have been five stars. I'm going to emphasize this again. Truly one of the best tenderloins I've had in the state! Keep doing what you are doing!

We didn't have reservations anywhere and this was the closest restaurant that allowed us to walk in and be seated. For the most part, the food was a 3 1/2 out of four. But my dish, which was Seabass, was a max of 1 1/2 points. Apparently I should've expected this for a restaurant that is better known for their steaks, but I'm not a red meat guy so I went with the bass. When the food came to the table, the server dropped it off very quickly and I was talking, so I really didn't have a chance to look at the plate until several minutes later. My sea bass was literally swimming in some kind of sauce that resembled an Italian salad dressing. Of course flooded the bottom of the plate and everything on the plate tasted like the sauce. I was barely able to eat any of the fish and one or two bites of everything else. On the plus side, everybody else at the table seemed to enjoy their dinner, but also rated their experience as a 3+ because it felt like a chain restaurant with no personality of its own The servers were very pleasant. The atmosphere and ambience were very clean and bright.
