Let's face it: no one wants to be at the endodontist office. I don't know why the front desk staff bothers to ask how your day is. I have been here a few times, and it was fine enough on my previous visits for me to return. I had a root canal a few years ago and it was... a root canal. No problems and seems to have been fine. But now when I have the misfortune of seeking out an endodontist, I will go elsewhere. I had a questionable tooth: might need a root canal, might need retreatment. I paid $600 for an appointment (with Dr Brian Davis) that got me no closer to an answer on what I should do. My options were half-heartedly explained to me after an exam, with my face numb, in the waiting room with other patients walking in and out. No one ever followed up. This might just be bad luck, but my mouth was more sore after that exam than it was after my actual root canal a week later (in a different office). I wound up driving to see two other dental specialists in the suburbs. By contrast, they each fully explained the options, taking time to walk me though it, in a room sitting down, pointing at x-rays. Neither of them charged me $600 for the consult. read more

Dr. Fonseca is wonderful!! She is compassionate, friendly, has great bedside manners and is very good at what she does, which is specializing in root canals. I made the painful and horrible mistake of going to a general dentist near DuPont Circle, BEFORE receiving a referral to visit her office. I had to come in for a root canal with Dr. Davis, and I must say that I walked out rather disappointed. After being x-rayed and determined that I would need a root canal treatment, we carried out with the procedure. In the midst of the procedure (about 10-15 minutes) with numbing done and drilling currently being performed. Dr. Davis told me that the tooth needed to be EXTRACTED instead. HOW COULD HE HAVE NOT KNOWN THIS FROM THE MULTIPLE X-RAYS TAKEN?? Ultimately aborting the procedure that I had to pay for out of pocket for work that didn't meet the original scope I came for. I'm not sure what's the status of my tooth because 1) i wasn't told given one, and 2) the tooth is covered with a temporary filling. However, I can tell that not as much of the tooth remains. Not sure if this is a case of dentist malpractice, but I'm in the middle of gathering information to consult with a lawyer. read more

I went here for a root canal and she is not only the real deal, but she has a sense of humor. I tried lying to her that I floss regularly and don't know why I needed a root canal and she called me on my Bs and gave me a serious but funny life talk on how having good teeth just opens doors for so many things - future wife, great jobs, etc... She also really cares about getting to know you and doesn't just drill the crap out of your mouth and say Alright done. Dr. Fonesca really shows that she cares about her patients teeth! I was continually reminded about my appointment and she even reminded me to keep flossing!!! The front desk staff and her assistants were super nice and even remembered after my 6 month follow up. She also made sure I was referred to a proper dentist for my crown. She really really cares like you are her own child. Well she is a mother after all, but still, she and her office are just hands down amazing!!! read more

TL;DR - Was told I'd need to pay essentially $1200 more out of pocket by the front desk upon check in because they don't accept my primary insurance despite being told otherwise on the phone before setting up my appointment. My general dentist recommended I get a root canal. Their office has the capability of performing root canals, but also offered me the option of seeing a specialist. They recommended Drs Fonseca or Davis for endodontists. I've had two prior procedures with them, so I figured I'd call them to determine if it was going to be feasible financially or if I should see my general dentist for the procedure. I called Dr Fonseca's office and told them the situation. The lady on the phone confirmed that they take both of my dental insurances. They told me my out of pocket cost would be ~$465 the day of the procedure and then my secondary insurance would have to reimburse me directly for the remaining difference. This seemed very reasonable, so I scheduled the procedure. I showed up for my appointment and the guy at the desk said I was given the wrong information and I'd actually need to pay $1600 out of pocket today because they do not accept my primary dental insurance. They offered absolutely no leeway with this. The guy said he could "check with the doctor to see if they could split it into two payments," but that doesn't negate the the fact that I was told I'd be paying $465 today, not $1600, and I called before even scheduling to confirm the financial aspect of it. Dr Fonseca's prior work itself has been dandy, but that does you no good if you can't even get past the waiting room. I feel they used a bait and switch tactic that just ended up wasting my time. read more

I will start this review by saying that my experiences were with Dr. Brian Davis, who works in Dr. Fonseca's office. I was referred to Dr. Davis after my dentist told me that I needed a root canal. Of course this is never good news, but I figured that I might as well just get it over with, so I made an appointment right away. Their office is located right off Dupont Circle, so it's a short 15 minute walk from my office. I know this next section may come off as gushing, but Dr. Davis is pretty dreamy! It's rare to come across a good looking professional in the health care field, so when you do, it's a treat! Not only is Dr. Davis dreamy, but he's also very kind. He is kind of no-nonsense, but not in a mean way. In internet slang I'd describe him as srs bzness. Unfortunately the root canal did not go as planned, but this was not due to a lack of expertise on Dr. Davis' part. The tooth that was being worked on was in a delicate spot with a huge nerve cluster. I will spare the gory details, but suffice to say that it took several tries to get me properly numb and I was very sore after being worked on. Dr. Davis explained what was happening and thankfully prescribed me two drugs to help me with any discomfort. I highly recommend Dr. Davis and the staff at this office. They are all very friendly and understand that your time is valuable, so your time in the waiting room will be minimal. read more

While I don't enjoy having an old root canal retreated, Dr. Fonseca made the whole process as painless as possible. For starters, the front desk staff is friendly and *gasp* accommodating. I especially liked being able to get an early 8 am appointment, so my whole day wasn't wasted. Dr. Fonseca is very thorough in her diagnosis and goes for the most sensible and not necessarily most costly treatment. She will explain the procedure(s) with just enough detail to make you feel comfortable but not overwhelmed or completely grossed out. If you need any sort of endodontic work, I would highly recommend this practice group. The office is also metro accessible... between dupont and farragut north stops. read more

I had such a terrible experience with Dr Fonseca. I would NEVER recommend her to anyone. Once I got there her front desk staff were kind, but not organized. Then when I was getting xrays her staff were a bit rough and then when Dr Fonseca came to examine me, she would not listen to what I was trying to explain to her, she was rough with me ( so much so that I ended up having a bruise on my chin for days afterwards), she seemed bothered by me, and was not patient with my questions. I do not appriecate if medical professionals act like I am there wasting there time. I am a paying client in need of your medical help. After that consultation, I decided against going to her for my procedure and found dentist who had a way better bedside manner and honestly a better dentist. I had a fun time getting a root canal today. Never in my life would I have even thought I could say those words, let alone be telling the truth when I said them. Strange as it is though, I did indeed have a good time. I had many complications with my root canal, and Dr. Fonseca described them to me while telling me what they meant and how she was going to go about fixing them. Her assistant Claudia was absolutely amazing, and the pair them worked together like a well oiled machine -- they barely had to look at each other when passing back and forth the instruments. It was basically pain free. Even the receptionists were welcoming, funny, and accommodating. As sick as this is, I'm actually looking forward to my next scheduled root canal in a few weeks. Dr. Michelle Loewinger recommended Dr. Fonseca to complete a root canal. I'd never had a root canal before, and as I mentioned in my review of Dr. Loewinger (who is amazing too, by the way) I'm beyond rationally terrified of dentists and their colleagues. Dr. Fonseca was so incredibly gentle and kind - I never even felt the first novocaine shot, and didn't feel a thing during the entire procedure. I was sent to Dr. Fonseca by Dr. Milliron (another great dentist). If you are coming here for a root canal, or something simliar, which I'm suspecting all of us reviewing here are, Dr. Fonseca and her assistant(s) make it as pleasant as possible. She was attentive to if I was in pain (which I was not) and the root canal process went smoothly. I had to come back a week later or so for her to finish the job, and she explained to me why exactly I was coming back and why it couldn't be done all in one sitting. Her office is also located in a convenient spot, near Dupont Circle. I am docking a star not because of her, but because of the front desk. They are polite and helpful, but on my first visit I waited an hour past my initial appointment time before I got in to see her. When I inquired what was going on, they finally explained to me that she was doing another procedure and was running past the scheduled time. I understand that this can happen, but you should at least let me know what's going on instead of me having to come up and ask what's going on. I believe you should also do your best to honor the appointment time; what's the point of making an appointment then? To her credit, she apologized for the delay. And also to the front desk's credit, I was treated promptly at my scheduled time at my next appointment the following week. Just had my first root canal and if it had to happen, I cannot imagine it having gone any better! Dr. Fonseca and her staff were thorough, thoughtful, kind, and really patient. I had several questions and Dr. Fonseca took her time to make sure the procedure was really needed, taking several x-rays and examining me carefully, asking many questions. She really put the decision into my hands, which I appreciate! While the root canal took a while, she explained it all too me. I didn't feel a thing and nearly fell asleep in the chair (hard to believe!!). She let me listen to music/radio through headphones and I felt as comfortable as can be expected. The dream team of Dr. Davis and Marie (10 years of partnership there, I'm told) handled an amazingly complicated procedure with grace and aplomb today. I'm just back from a double root canal, one that held more than one surprise for our intrepid heroes: #29 had a second canal (pre-molars generally have only one), and #31's labyrinthine tunnels would have left Perseus in tears. Theirs was an impressive display of professionalism and teamwork; I marveled at Marie's ability to determine whether a second x-ray was required, judging solely from Dr. Davis' body language as he examined the monitor. Tools were passed with nary a word, and the deed was quickly done. One hopes that I will not find myself in need of their services again, but should that be the case, I'll know I'm in good hands. Dr. Fonseca was recommended to me by my primary dentist. I was experiencing significant tooth pain in a molar I had previously filled for a cavity about a year prior. My dentist suspected I had devolved a crack under the filling and sent me to Dr. Fonseca for a root canal evaluation. She was very lovely and made the consultation process quick and easy. Her staff even worked me into an earlier appointment because I was experiencing pain. Dr. Fonseca recommended I move forward with the root canal and a week later I was back in her chair. I had one root canal prior, so I was familiar wit the procedure but again I found her and her staff to be very calming and friendly. She did not over numb my mouth like other dentists have done, but I didn't feel a thing during the surgery. Honestly the worst part was the x-rays (I have a very small mouth) and the smell. I will never get used to the smell of dental procedures. In less than an hour I was on my way home and back in bed before 9:30am. I hope I will not need another root canal in the foreseeable future, but if I do, I will certainly utilize Dr. Fonseca. read more

Hmmm...is it weird to say I had a good time getting a root canal?! Olga and her assistant were AMAZING. I use to go to a dentist who was super aggressive, so much so, that I had to tell her. Then, see someone else in her practice for her to understand and be gentler with me the next time we met. Needless to say I was terrified. What a COMPLETE 180 this experience was! Olga was sooooooo gentle and had great bed side manner. I had on mala beads, so she decided to share a picture of her trip to the Grand Canyon where she took a picture of a monk with similar beads. I had to write my first review on Yelp for Dr Fonseca because she was that incredible. I've lived in fear of root canals since watching my mum have one years ago, and I was terrified when the time came for me to get one today. Dr Fonseca was incredibly nice and very understanding, and she checked in constantly to make sure that I was fine. I have an extremely low pain tolerance, and her root canal was the most painless dental procedure I've ever received. Her office staff was incredible, and her attendants were nice as well. I was referred to Dr. Fonseca's office by my primary dentist for a crack in my tooth. When I arrived to the office for a consult, I admired chatting with all of the staff at the front desk. Very friendly and personable! My experience was with Dr. Davis. Let me just say that I had a very positive experience getting a root canal for the first time. Who has fun at the dentist, the place that takes all of your money to keep your teeth healthy and looking nice? Besides Dr. Davis being a McDreamy (not hard on the eyes at all) was so kind and very humorous. Needless to say, that I was terrified and ended up having a pain free root canal. I didn't even feel the three needles that I received to numb the area. I highly recommend Dr. Davis. He explained the process, listened to me whining about the pain I thought I would feel and ended up having to work extra hard on my tooth when he found out I have four canals instead of the normal three. I learned something new about myself today. I hope I never have to get another root canal again but if by chance I do, I won't hesitate to call Dr. Davis for a visit. In July 2016 I got a tooth pain and went to Dr. Fonseca office hoping to get my root canal done. I have arrived to the office on time and completed a new patient form. After returning the form back to the front desk I asked the front desk stuff how much will the root canal cost with my insurance (I have Blue Cross Blue Shield Fed insurance plus a Dental Supplemental). The front desk stuff assured me that my insurance will cover the half of the root canal cost and gave me a quote of $365. Dr. Fonseca took and x-ray of my tooth (I also had a 3D x-ray I recently got done at other clinic). The doctor started working on my tooth... 20 min after she simply turned off her equipment and told me that there is nothing else she can do, the tooth is too complicated for her, covered the tooth hole with a white filling and let me go. At the front desk she told the stuff that the procedure was not complete so my charge will be "only" $280. I paid the money (I wish I was smarter, I was simply exhausted from my tooth being drilled for 20 min and just wanted to leave the place). On August 29th, 2016 I received a letter from Dr. Fonseca office about an additional balance I apparently have with them and that I owe $369 more (for the whole in my tooth that was not even properly covered, the white filling stuff came out once I brushed my teeth that night). I have called the dental office hoping to get an explanation, but all I have been told is that after submitting the paper work to the insurance, they found out that "the incomplete root canal" procedure is not covered. Eventually my tooth got infected and I had to extract it the following week and payed $200 more. read more

The woman on the phone (not Christina) got defensive, and did not offer to call. Turns out the office was correct, but to feel that treatment towards me, would make me pause to chose this office in the future. Bottom line, confirm and TRIPLE confirm with the office and your insurance company as I keep getting these extra charges. read more

I saw Dr. Davis for an apicoectomy and a root canal and was very satisfied. Dr. Davis was very patient with answering all my questions. He's personable with a good sense of humor, which put my mind at ease. The procedure itself went well and was completely painless. I had a bad experience with a painful root canal in the past and this one was much better. He also gave me clear follow-up instructions so I knew what to expect, and he called me the next day to check up on me. Overall, a great experience! read more

So after putting off going to the dentist for way too long, I went and found out I needed a root canal. The look on other people's faces when I told him instilled such a fear into me that I spent hours researching online for alternatives - including just having the tooth pulled because it seems that could be less painful! Needless to say, I was terrified when I went into Dr. Fonseca's office for my root canal. I think I was literally shaking a bit when filling out all the forms. Well, I am amazed and stunned and how painless this procedure was. They took a few x-rays and examined the tooth, chatting with me along the way. I was numbed first with cotton swabs and then a few minutes later received the injection which I did not feel. I received a second injection which I barely felt and a few minutes later they tested me to see if I was numb which I was. The procedure took about an hour, with a few stops for additional x-rays and the hardest part of keeping my mouth open for an hour (insert jokes here). I feel only some pressure now and then, there was some noise from the equipment, but it was completely tolerable. Afterward they gave me an ibuprofen and sent me on my way. I was numb for a bout 2.5 hours after the procedure and had no real residual pain. I did not need any more ibuprofen during the day. My jaw is a bit achy and the gum area where I got the injection is slightly sore, but it is nothing I can't handle and don't really even need any pain killers for it at all. The most painful part was the bill ($$$$) but that is not their fault, it is my crappy dental insurance. However, the bill is enough incentive to never come back! :) PS - I want to put a note in here about people who complain about the office staff. They were friendly to me but not warm, and were perfectly nice - no complaints. However, when I was preparing to leave a woman had come in (she didn't appear to be rushed or anything) and I heard the receptionist indicate that because she was nearly 30 minutes late for her appointment, they were not sure they could guarantee her appt for today, but would do what they could to accommodate her. She immediately got snippy and tried to blame them for the lack of information about where to park and told them that they should have told her about the parking situation when she made her appt. I understand she was likely in pain and frustrated, but patients also need to take some responsibility - if you are driving, ask about parking and don't take it out on the office staff who have no control over appt issues! read more

Dr. Fonseca botched my root canal causing a sinus infection that took months of antibiotics to recover from. I normally don't take antibiotics, but after more than a month of trying alternative treatments I had no choice. When I returned for my follow up appointment I told her that I was still feeling sensitivity in my treated tooth and she said that the only way to know what was going on was to take a 3D X-ray, which, of course, my insurance doesn't cover. $400 later she told me that she didn't see anything unusual, but told me to come back in 6 months for a follow-up. When I went back I was in her office for no more than two minutes even after telling her that I still had sensitivity in the tooth. Her response was that it just happens like that sometimes. That's it. The she had the nerve to bill me $55, which I refuse to pay. I filed a complaint with my. Insurance company, so we'll see.And her staff is just as rude as everyone says they are. This place really frustrated me. I had a root canal done a few years ago. I'm unhappy with both their billing and their bedside manner. I'll never go back here if I can help it. First, I was really nervous for the procedure. I was given nothing other than normal numbing. This is what gas is for!!! A root canal is a really miserable procedure with a lot of pressure in your mouth, and your mouth is really wide open. I went back a week or two later because the tooth was still sensitive, and I was pretty much blown off. The doctor who checked it out spent two minutes looking at it and told me the gums were just still sensitive. He was a jerk about it and didn't listen to a single thing I said. This tooth still hurts occasionally. I'm hoping at my regular dentist Friday I'm told there is nothing wrong, but we'll see. Finally, I was charged $100 for the follow-up visit, where the doctor did nothing. I figured out this was because they billed my insurance incorrectly. After multiple phone calls, I thought we had the situation resolved. Well, three months later I got a call from a collection agency. So, not only are they Medicare surgeons with bedside manner, they are have a rude, incompetent billing department. read more

I was referred to Dr. Fonseca for an emergency root canal due to a tooth abscess from a prior crown. If you don't read any further, I highly recommend her if you need a root canal. Briefly, since others have had similar high praise for her professionalism and expertise: - She fit me in right away, despite a very busy clinic. - Her manner was very calming and reassuring, especially given that I was in so much pain. - She explained everything thoroughly, and answered any remaining questions I had. - The procedure was painless and post-procedure course smooth, though I was prepared an agonizing event. And I just had the root canal finished, since it couldn't be completed in one step due to the abscess. Do yourself a favor - if you need a root canal, go to Dr. Fonseca. read more

Dr. Fonseca may be pleasant personally, but the professionalism of her office leaves much to be desired, and her competence as a physician is at best questionable. I saw Dr. Fonseca in August of 2010, at which time a root canal was performed. No aftercare was mentioned or scheduled by her office. Within nine months, a large cyst developed around the tooth, and upon visiting her offices, she recommended surgery. She also chided me for not receiving aftercare, and when I pointed out that the scheduling of aftercare was incumbent upon her office, she became nasty and refused to even identify the nature of the procedure. Needless to say, I saw another endodontist who indicated that sealant in the canal was insufficiently tight, and attempted to perform an additional root canal. I will now have to have surgery performed. At this point, I would run from this office, unless you know the pleading standards required for malpractice cases in the District of Columbia. read more

Update: While my experience in the office was great, I cannot recommend them unless you get some very specific guidance up front on costs. I was told by the dentist and the front desk and Dr. Fonseca's office that this quick referral would be fully covered by my dental insurance, and that it would not cost me anything. Fast forward two months and my first bill for $85 arrives in the mail. I called and explained the situation, and I was told "we would never tell you it was free. That's ridiculous." and told that I need to pay now. I explained the situation again, and that I had no intention of paying after the fact. I have received a "bill" or a phone call every 6-8 months since, and despite repeatedly explaining the circumstances have gotten nowhere. DO NOT receive services without getting all charges cleared in advance. Original Review: I second every "WOW" that other reviewers have exclaimed. I entered this morning at 8:30am expecting to have two root canals. The back story is that I had a terrible dentist last year that insisted I get the root canals immediately while getting a routine cleaning, and who also told me I had two cavities. Having never had any cavities nor any tooth pain, I was doubtful. They also pressured me very hard to get it done. So, I sought out a new dentist and ended up with Dr. Stephen Barsky (who also is a 5 star rating). Dr. Barsky told me I had no cavities, but suspected I might need the root canals. He was unclear, though, and asked me to visit Dr. Olga Fonseca as she is a "fantastic peridontist." So today, I entered the office thinking root canals were likely. Everyone from the front desk to the attendant were just lovely, and Dr. Fonseca was even better. She smilingly walked me through 3 tests to check my teeth, and then told me concisely and clearly that not only did I NOT need root canals, but that I likely would never need them on those teeth. She smiled and sent me on my way. It is just amazing to have worked with TWO dentists who put patient care ahead of billable procedures, and who are nice as can be to boot. Dr. Fonseca is the best dentist--and possibly the best Dr. - I have ever worked with. I had a complicated procedure done to fix an infection in an old root canal. My infection came back when I was pregnant a few months later. Dr. Fonseca treated me with great care and provided free care to make sure the infection was gone. She took time to explain the root canal (my first), injected me with enough Novocain to kill a small child, and was very very thorough. Attitude matters a lot, and helps explain why my experience was so positive. During my procedure, 2 or 3 assistants came in telling Dr. Fonseca that a patient was on the phone with an emergency, and she made room the same day to see all of them (or suggested as much). Needless to say I was not looking forward to it. But from the front desk staff (who fit me in nearly a week early thanks to a cancellation) to Dr. Fonseca and her assistant, it went much better than expected. No one wants to have their mouth open for 2 hours while a dentist is working away inside, but Dr. Fonseca explained every step and made sure I was comfortable. In January 2012, I saw Dr. Fonseca for a re-treatment of a root canal. She came highly recommended by a friend. I was still very uncomfortable and told her about my horrific root canal experiences. She assuaged my fears and told me there would be absolutely no pain in this process....Believe it or not, there wasn't! She is a great listener with Fantastic bedside manner. Gentle, compassionate dentistry! I was in incredible pain and went to my regular dentist who referred me to Dr. Fonseca for a root canal. Absolutely miserable- and scared and nervous- she and her staff were able to assess, treat and fix my tooth.
