Today I went to OldSchool for a belated birthday dinner. I had a reservation at 19 and it was only a short bike ride away from my home. The location is quite cool and I like the setting, an old school now used as event space and a restaurant. The restaurant space was big and industrial but with the light and the candles is was cozy and nice. The restaurant was not very busy and when we came in I said something like; "yeah I have a reservation, though it does not seem like I really needed one". The waitress got a little irritated by this :') But it was true, there weren't many people, sorry...
We were seated and an other waitress helped us for the rest of the evening. She was very kind and helpful. The first thing I noticed was that the new winter menu was much more expensive than the summer menu I saw online. For dishes that are meant to be shared (OldSchool has the shared dinning concept that you see a lot nowadays) 19 euros is quite a lot. Well, alright, let's order.
We started with some bread with oil and butter, a fish platter and a glass of Chardonnay. The fish platter came with baby octopus (not much taste, a little sour), mackerel (okay) and mackerel crème (okay). The waitress got us some extra bread for the crème, which was kind. The platter was nothing special and not something I would ever order again.
After this we had the Gascone calf's meat with potato's. This was fine, but again, nothing spectacular. Still, it was 19 euros, quite a lot for dish to share. We also order cauliflower with cranberry sauce, hazelnut crème and hazelnuts. This dish I did really like. The other veggie dishes (which were meant as sides) also sounded interesting and creative.
For dessert we ordered 2 desserts to share; a 'vanilla cranberry parfait in a sandwich of chocolate cookie' and 'tartelette of mandarin and almonds. The parfait tasted boring and the cookie was way to hard, it was not eatable with fork or spoon so you have to separate the ice-cream from the cookie and eat the cookie with your hands. The tartelette was actually very good but it was soooo small. Just lame. You would finish it in 3-4 bites. We paid 70 euros for everything, which is much more then you would pay for the same amount of food with the summer menu. The prices are really higher now! I hate it when restaurants do this when they feel like they are popular enough,
I will give this place three stars because the setting was cool, the waitress friendly, I liked two dishes and the calf was okay. But still, I would not recommend this ever and I could have given 2 stars for this experience as well. It was just not worth it and there are so many restaurants that are much better! read more
