I was recommended by my Dutch friend to try the steak at Loetje, and I wasn't disappointed! My friend and I came by Loetje Oost around 6:30 on Sunday evening and there was plenty of seating available. I had made a reservation right beforehand on their website, but I definitely didn't need it. There's a nice patio outside, but because it was starting to get a bit chilly in the evening, we opted to sit inside. My friend got the Thai chicken soup ($8) to start and had the chicken satay skewers ($18.50) for his entree. Interestingly enough, the restaurant was out of chicken (is that really a thing?) so the Thai chicken soup because a Thai veggie soup instead. He didn't mind though, and really liked it as it had a nice coconut flavor. The chicken skewers were good as well. I went straight for the steak and ordered a medium sized beef tenderloin with their garlic gravy ($27.50). The server asked if I wanted fries with that, but I went with a healthier apple compote side for $3.50 instead. I absolutely LOVED my steak, and that's quite rare for me as I'm generally not a steak person. I was a bit worried because she didn't ask how I wanted the steak cooked, but I guess here the default is to cook it on the rarer side and I certainly didn't mind! The steak is served swimming in a pool of gravy, which I've never seen before. Each bite was super tender, and the garlic gravy it came with was super salty so by dipping the meat into the sauce, that guaranteed the meat was flavorful enough. Great all Dutch meat place with some fish options. Very laid back place for a nice group or few friends hang out. There are several Loetje around. This is the one in West, close to the Amstel. Juicy steak, perfectly cooked. Hot, crunchy bitterballen with creamy insides. Yummy sauteed mushrooms. I think they drizzled a lot of oil on the meat and 'shrooms, but they were tasty. They didn't play any music, which could have added to the ambiance. But the decor was nice. And even though it was loud inside, you could still hold a conversation. We were referred here by one of the front desk staff at the Swissôtel for "the best steaks" in a non-touristy part of town, and he said he also lived in this neighborhood. After we got there, I realized this restaurant is part of a chain, and my friend was a bit disappointed. But the food was really good and the staff spoke English and gave us English menus when we asked for it. And everything was beautiful inside--especially the bar area. We were seated at a high table at the bar area in the front of the restaurant, and I could admire the cool light fixtures and decorations on the walls. My friend got some mints from the bar that were like big white discs and tasted delicious. I can't believe this is a chain of restaurants. That proves, again, what poor taste people have in food. The food is unbelievable mediocre and overpriced. The size of the steak doesn't match the price you have to pay for it. The steak didn't taste like a 20 euro piece of meat. To make things even worse you have to pay extra for your fries. Really? Cheesecake Factory like quality steaks and salads. Covered in sauce, caramelized onions - all the possible flavors to distract you from the average cut of meat. Efficient, non Dutch style service got us in and our in under 45 minutes. I had veal liver, and we shared burrata cheese appetizer. My boyfriend had steak with chicken livers. When a place is always busy it's because is good! That's the case of Loetje! Really handy that you can book through their website and you can see the hours available. Big but cozy restaurant. Went here despite reading the negative reviews. Some were right - the first time I went here there was no greeting at the door and I asked a member of staff if they were still doing food which she said 'yes till 1030pm' friendly and smiling.l but nothing else so Went to approach an empty table and another older man who was staff stopped and said there is a waiting list.. Lack of communication - We waiting for a table for maybe 20-30mins. We both ordered medium steak which was more blue/rare - I still ate mine as I didn't really mind. It really was delish and the Bali Steak was very tastey. Next time I went a couple of days later I asked for medium to well but it was definitely well done: so I don't know what to as going on there.. Two extremes and neither time cooked as asked. Simply put - they're not lying about having the best steak in Amsterdam. That being said -- I am not a steak expert!! I would normally never order a steak at a restaurant, and I was pleasantly surprised by the melt-in-your-mouth quality of it and the combination of the sauce with the texture of the meat. But that's all I know. Great place, good for big groups, good salads to accompany the steak (although I couldn't eat more than a few bites due to the massive delicious steak). read more

There are a few Loetjes around Amsterdam. The welcome was not the friendliest we have encountered in Amsterdam. We were given a number and indication how long you have to wait before you are seated. It was - as usual - crowded. While we waited, we got a wine. The white housewine definitely was good. Soon we discovered that sitting on the terrace while waiting for a table is not a good choice. The terrace is ruled by smokers. As non-smoker, I don't enjoy sitting in the smoke of a cigarette nor eating my dinnner while someone smokes next to me. Inside can get very noisy on the busy evenings. However, for smokers this will be a nice place where you feel welcome. Once we got seated at the table, we ordered our main dish, i.e chicken sate, a salad and fries. Salad was okay and good to share with twos, the chicken was drowned in peanut sauce and the fries lacked taste. Service at the table was friendly and above amsterdam standard. Overall it;s for me only 3 stars as my food was not as good as I would expect at this price. Service at the table and wine were excellent, so therefor I did not give 2 stars. I will definitely return, and may try than the steak that everyone seems to love. Tips: - Make sure you reserve your table in time for dinner. This place gets very crowded on thursdays and fridays. I love eating out, so I always make time almost every weekend to eat out and try new places. This time was Loetje's turn, after reading all the good reviews on tripadvisor and yelp. When I first walked in, I already did not quite like the atmosphere. It was so packed you could not even walk without stepping on someone toes. Nevertheless, I decided to just get a table and the host told me to wait for 30 min. I waited, waited, waited and waited, asked and after 40 min nothing. So I asked the host again she said wait 5 min more after 10 min still nothing. At this point I should've left. After more than an hour finally we got our table. We called for the waitress so many times but was ignored. Finally we ordered the bali steak. When our food arrived was surprised of how fatty and salty the sauce was. The price was also not friendly on the wallet for that quality. My suggestion avoid and go to castell better quality steak and atmosphere. read more

I don't mind the simplicity of having my meat sitting in a pool of sauce even though it looks like a bowel movement gone wrong. We stumbled into here our first night in Amsterdam and are glad we did. As others have said there is no greeter at the door, but that's not common based on our experience in other restaurants in Amsterdam so I don't think that's a fair criticism for the place. We asked the bartender for a table and got seated right away. The food and service were both very good - the Bali steak had a great seasoning to it. We found out after the fact that this was a chain restaurant, but it never felt like that while we were there. Okay, if you're up for steaks - and you have an iron stomach that can handle a load of butter - this is the place to visit if you want a chance a of actually getting a table. The concept of keeping you waiting (and mostly drinking) while you wait, is awesome, yet a bit passe if you ask me. Lottie Oost came highly recommended by our hotel as the "best steaks" in town. On arriving, the front part of the restaurant has a great atmosphere, open, modern, fun, unfortunately, our party was seated at the back of the restaurant. This was more cafeteria like and definitely lacking in the charm of the front. The service was indifferent at best, they were busy, but they also didn't seem at all concerned with serving us. The steak was solidly mediocre, not the best of we expected. In a city of great restaurants, there are loads of better choices, this wasn't too bad, just not great. read more
