I've stopped in for breakfast sandwiches in the past, those egg sandwiches have always been decent. But yesterday, I was hankering for a burger, and I recall seeing a billboard in town claiming that Olde School Deli has "the Best burgers in Town", so I decided to order one since I was passing through. I went with a mushroom Swiss burger, and I also decided to get some beer battered fries to go with my burger. I walked back to my vehicle to consume my food, and I have to say, THAT'S ONE TASTY BURGER. It really hit the spot, loved the fries too. Honestly, I have high standards for burgers, and I always feel like I make better ones on my own grill myself, so every time I order one out, I'm disappointed. Not so with the burgers at Olde School Deli. I drove home satisfied, and look forward to another burger when I'm passing through Canaan again. read more

My favorite breakfast place. Home fries (grilled with peppers and onions) are the best you can get. Omelettes are always great. Burgers are good too. Battered fries, delish. Service is always good. They always have my hot sauce on the plate without me asking (because I always forget to), and I'm not nearly enough of a regular to warrant that level of remembrance, yet here we are. The Deli is by far the best restaurant in this town. They have a great selection on their menu and everything is amazingly tasty! I'm very picky about my MB grinders. It's one of my favorite foods but most places can't make them right , they are always too dry with barely any peppers and onions in them even when I ask for extra. But when I asked for it my certain way at the Deli they nailed it. There was plenty of cheese, peppers and onions. I can't wait to go back and get it again. Also, they make the best truffle fries and the cheeseburger is always done to perfection too. I can't thank them enough for being a great affordable , family friendly restaurant in this small town. One lady there is always miserable, (think she is the owner I think after reading other reviews about how nasty she is... Yikes) she wanted to charge me for ketchup packets. Bc I wanted more then 3! That's just ridiculous, never have I seen that before. I work in the industry so I know, and think even ppl not in the industry knows condiments are free especially things like ketchup mayonnaise and mustard packets. They make their own hours that aren't listed online, they said they're not open when I called at 11:45am on a Sunday when it says open till 3, drove by on my way somewhere and passed the place before noon and the open sign was still lit up yet we couldn't order take out.... If there was some sort of an emergency then I feel they should have stated that. Again I work in the same industry and it would be nonsensical for me to tell ppl we are closed during business hours without so much as an explanation and furthermore with a poor attitude. To have poor attitudes towards customers right off the bat is just baffling, especially since that's your interaction right off the bat & customers are paying you for your service. Also we never ask for complicated or off menu orders. This is a small business I believe so I hate to leave a bad review but after these several things happening over the course of yrs I feel I had to share. If the business would like to respond to this review and have a conversation and/or give an explanation for the things they've done and their treatment towards customers I would be happy to change my review. But I don't have high hopes since it seems almost everyone there hates their job and is annoyed with us half the time we go in there and we are always polite and nice no matter their attitude because we know that you never know what someone is dealing with so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and chance to explain their side. (Doubt they will) But like I said this has been the theme there for years. It's just sad that I don't even feel comfortable enough to go in there and always send someone else to pick up the food. This is a reply to Nikki R's review. I cannot claim my families business and reply directly to your comment. However, if you must need an explanation of what goes on behind the scenes I will give you the details. The "old lady" you described is my mother. On her behalf, I apologize if she has given any attitude or treated you unfairly. She doesn't have social media, so she will not be replying to your review. However, you are right. You do not know what someone goes through and I would hope you would understand how hard it is to run a business and please every customer. However, if you want extra condiments we have to charge you for them. For there or to go. Prices have sky rocketed since "inflation" and if you are in the business industry you would know this. Everyone that works there seems "miserable" but like you said, there's more to the story. My mom, along with my sister and myself who also work here have very serious health issues. I won't go into detail of what they deal with on a daily basis, because that's their decision and it's personal. However, I will tell you I personally deal with a cancerous brain tumor, chronic pain and debilitating migraines. For this reason, I am out of work half of the week and considering it's a family business they become short staffed. Things get hectic when you only have two people to run the whole show. They answer phones, wait on tables, wash dishes and make the sandwiches. One person doing a three person job. It's not at all easy. I understand you've had bad experiences and so has other people, and I deeply apologize. I don't want anyone to have a bad experience when they eat here. No one does. However, some of the things you have stated in your review were nasty. I think instead of lowering our rating, and putting our business on blast, you could have at least spoken to my dad about your experience in a more professional manner. This is not the first business my parents have ran. They love this town and the community. I just don't think you should be judging a book by it's cover. I walked into this establishment today because I am a firm believer in second chances. Over three years ago, my girlfriend and I had a terrible experience due to the nasty and disrespectful attitude of the older woman who works there (the owner I presume). There were three open booths at around 1:45pm on a Friday (today). I am about 6'6" 300lbs. and like extra room and that is not possible at one of the tables with chairs. I began to approach a booth to sit and this same woman began to bark orders at me. She ordered me to one of the chairs and I immediately looked dumbfounded at the three open booths. In a condescending tone, she assured me that these booths "would be full, you watch". Just not at the moment. Mind you, I was looking to eat and leave the quickly. This was a no brainer and I left on the spot without another word. I will not spend my hard earned money in this place EVER. Maybe this woman has something going on in her life and needs to treat customers this way, who knows. I'm glad that her business is booming and she can afford to drive people away with her nastiness. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Industry kitchen and bar like I did. The chipotle chicken wrap was delightful as was the bartender. I heard about this through FB but didn't give it much thought based on a few earlier reviews. Today we went there for a late lunch and boy what a surprise! Go there!! It is fabulous! The limited staff was more than efficient and friendly with the packed room. Serving tables and doing takeout orders that a staff double the size could not have handled - truly amazing. Oh did I forget to mention the food!! I had a Baja sandwich on Gluten Free and the staff was kind enough to put an unbreaded chicken cutlet on it. My husband had a roast beef club and we spilt an order of hand-cut fries. All was excellent! They have all sorts of GF items, which made my heart happy! I'm sold. read more

I like this place because they offer extensive gluten free options and the food in general is very tasty. The owner is never friendly but Amanda's explanation from a year ago gives a lot of insight. However the daughters have always been polite. Today I brought a friend who has never eaten there, and the food was definitely delicious. But she won't return and it was embarrassing. The owner delivered our order which her daughter had taken , and when asked which order which plate was, she said with exasperation that she didn't know as she hadn't taken the order and literally threw up her hands . When queried about which plate was gluten free she said unpleasantly that she didn't know , and asked the cook who yelled at us from the kitchen door. Our waitress who took our order refused to return to our table and although one order was incorrect, never acknowledged the error and no offer or effort was made to remedy it . When my husband tried to hand the owner back the change she'd just put on our table, she actually barked at him to leave it on the table! The issue is what it generally is (so I only go about six times a year, returning when the memory of the rudeness fades) the lack of customer appreciation, and lack of basic civility. I'm sure being open seven days a week is exhausting and they were very busy , and seemed to be short handed but after many years of being in business, they know they ll survive in spite of this. Canaan has few choices at the moment and the food really is very good but it sure would be great if they could expend their energy in a more positive way, and at least make an effort to rectify a minor issue. Of course everyone has the option to spend their dollars anywhere they choose. It's certainly nice to support a family business but today's experience was not nice. read more

I. ordered a burger a couple times now ... tastes good but I order medium rare get raw . order medium get raw . order well done get medium rare . they obviously don't own a thermometer and clearly every time they cook the burgers they do so by eye . the only problem is the person who eye balls it dosent know the first thing about temps. had to throw out my burger on multiple different occasions. The food is excellent! They have the best egg sandwiches and paninis! Having said that, the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. During a recent visit, my plan was to place and order and return to pick it up. I stood in front of the register for more than 5 minutes without even being acknowledged. I totally understand being very busy with other orders and all I was expecting was for someone to say something to the effect of "we'll be with you as soon as we can" but not a word was said to me. Excellent! We were driving around looking for a place to eat and came upon this place by chance. The food was wonderful and so were the prices and the service. Very comfortable booths to sit and relax in. I had blueberry pancakes and very much appreciated being able to pay a tiny bit extra and get REAL maple syrup. Being a New Englander, I'm fussy that way and I don't want pancakes with fake "pancake Syrup." No high fructose corn syrup junk for me. I love real maple syrup. My friends enjoyed their meals too and I know if we lived nearer, we'd be back all the time. It was open all day long, which was good, because we drove all the way from Farmington and by the time we got there, the diners were closing. But maybe that was for the best because we got to eat here instead. BTW, you can get gluten free pancakes! You can get chocolate chip pancakes! You can get about a million kinds of eggs. Def old school. The downtown of my hometown is admittedly in rough shape right now, as many businesses are turning over, closing, et al. There are few good places to eat in Canaan. Besides our three pizza / Italian restaurants (which is clearly necessary in a town of 3,000+ people), our few all-American places, and the historical Collin's Diner (and thank goodness for that place), the food scene is lacking. But! Olde School Deli seems to fill the deli gap the town has, surprisingly. As for my sandwich, I...wasn't too impressed. Then again, I was splitting it with my aunt and she just wanted turkey, lettuce, and mayo on flimsy wheat bread. I'm sure if I ordered a roast beef with lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, and mayo on a hard roll, I would have been much more satisfied. Prices are right. $4 - 7 for any sandwich, just based on a quick glance of the menu. The menu was pretty extensive too, with sandwiches, grinders, paninis, and the like. I have a feeling this place is much more hopping on weekdays than weekends, when our town figuratively hibernates. I hope so. You got to support local businesses! read more

People seem to get all upset with the "customer service" but it's a family run place that works as most delis do, so I wouldn't expect proper table service. This place is very good. I always order breakfast on the weekends as take out and it is always ready the time they say it is going to be. No matter how busy they are! I have also dined in a few times, the booth tables don't leave alot of room seating for people sitting in them because the table is like cutting your skin. Sat down with family for break/lunch. Had a chicken cutlet with avocado and bacon, really good simple sandwich for a good price. Dad had cornbeef hash which was house made and really good.
