Stewed Pork Hand-Ripped Noodle
Nate L.

TLDR: great lunch spot for a cold chilly day in Manhattan. Noodles will definitely warm you up from the spice and soup is very hearty. Decided to try this place on a cold winter day and it was extremely worth. The stewed pork with hand ripped noodles were amazing. The pork had a perfect combination of lean meat and fattiness. The noodles had a very nice bounce and the soup was EXTREMELY fragrant. I came in around 1PM at peak lunch hours and ordered at one of their kiosks. I got my food extremely quick so I was pleasantly surprised. All in all, an expensive but very worthy meal.

I came here Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving and it was quiet as usual downtown weekend. It looks traditional but clean with old style tables and benches. The place was pretty empty so we just self select a table. We are to order at station if pay by card or from the staff/owner at the counter top. Since it was very cold, we had to order the noodle soup. Bro went with lamb & I went with beef noodle with soup. Free appetizer or drink if order $25 or more. Nice bonus. Each bowl runs about $15+. We asked for dumplings. The food came quickly. Meat & broth were both delicious... Totally got the spot and got the warm fuzzy feelings. Noodles and skin off the dumpling were inconsistent in chew & some doughy. I enjoyed the food and like to see the consistency of the make & cook of noodle that would really elevate the whole bowl. I would try another appetizer when have a choice.

This place was a huge disappointment. We were in the area and saw this place and was very excited to give it a shot. I am a big fan of Xian Famous Food and was hoping for something similar. First of all the noodle was not even chewy. It was big, flat, soft and just boring. Did not taste the hand pulled noddles at all. We ordered the spicy beef noodle soup and the vegetarian noodle soup and both were extremely disappointing. The vegetable one was especially bad. It lacked in flavor and just bland and boring. We also ordered the spicy cumin lamb burger and the beef burger. And both were way too salty and lack flavor again. Really a shame...the place is cute and we really had high hopes. But a complete copy cat of Xian Famous food that failed. I'm sorry but people who liked this place really don't know Chinese food..there I said it.

The real vegetables brought to me only after complaining

I ordered chicken hand-ripped noodle soup for $14. The photo clearly shows bock choy, mushrooms and lots of vegetables. What I got, was a soup with dark meat chicken, 2 pieces of broccoli, noodles and chopped iceberg lettuce. I got the impression they were saving money by leaving out the best ingredients and replacing with cheap broccoli and iceberg lettuce. I did complain and they tried to convince me that what I wanted was vegetable soup, not chicken soup. They then brought me a bowl of the missing vegetables. Total bait and switch. Not going back there again.

***2 1/2 stars*** This just wasn't my cup of tea. After enduring yet another dreary Friday morning with no sunlight (almost every Friday has been like that for the past month or two), I decided the appropriate lunch to have was dumplings. After pondering and seeing a few nearby options, my Skipper and I decided this was the best of the bunch. She was already a fan from prior experience, and I had a vague memory of stopping here for a to-go order months ago. As soon as I saw the Irish bar outdoor seating next door (it involves a refitted dark green bus I think), I remembered that I wasn't crazy about the dumplings here because they had something crunchy in them - possibly chives - so I reversed course at the 11th hour and got something else. These days/lunches happen. They can't all be gems, even when you do the prep work. It's a cute interior with exposed, dark brick and a lot of big screens separating the tables. Definitely feels like some leftover COVID infrastructure in here (though it doesn't affect the experience). The dining situation here is pretty interesting. It's a hybrid of a takeout establishment and a sit-down restaurant; regardless of whether you intend to stay or not, you order on a giant iPadish device and don't really have any interaction with the staff beyond receiving the food from someone. When we were done, we just got up to leave since we'd already paid at the kiosk. I decided to get one of the more popular dishes here, the spicy cumin lamb entree with hand-ripped noodles (about $15). It arrived insanely quickly - within probably a minute or so. Huge points for that, and it made the lunch hour much more manageable. Aside from a Thai dish or two, this was one of my first times dealing with these types of noodles, and I'm just not a fan - they're heavy, cumbersome and for me impossible to eat with the provided chopsticks. They did have some plastic forks available for poor souls like me though. Also as a palate preference, there were chunks of peppers, etc. that I just wasn't into - I focused exclusively on the lamb meat and the noodles (which probably tells you I'm not the target demo for this type of food). It may be unfair to compare it to the aforementioned Thai food, but I just didn't think it tasted as zesty as that - it was more soy sauce-ish, which I don't find as flavorful (it comes with pretty much every sushi roll I've ever gotten and I ignore it). I'm certainly not going to claim this is a bad restaurant; I could easily envision someone who likes this type of food more than me having a solid meal here. And the price point/service (intangibles for sure) were very good. But I'm more likely to wander into the neighboring Irish bar than coming back here to battle the hand-ripped noodles.

Spicy beef hand-ripped noodles, steamed pork dumplings, shredded potato
Matthew H.

I stopped by for lunch since I was in the neighbourhood and looking for something Chinese to eat - it's a pretty lowkey, hole-in-the-wall-esque place, and when I came by around 2pm, there was only one other person eating inside. Their ordering system is totally automated now, via two kiosks, and after ordering, I got my food (in takeout containers) quickly. I ordered the spicy beef hand-ripped noodles - noodles were nicely cut and cooked, and the sauce was unexpectedly spicy, which was definitely a plus. Beef pieces were really tasty, too - tender and juicy in every bite, with quite a generous helping. The steamed dumplings, on the other hand, were not great - definitely overpriced, and the fillings were just dry and bland. Shredded potato was fine-ish (I really do adore most potato dishes in all shapes and sizes), but for the price I'm also not sure I'd order it again next time. Generally, not a bad experience albeit a bit expensive, and I think it would be nice to come again to try some of the other many noodle dishes - but I'd probably steer clear of most of the smaller side options.

Steam Mini Pork Buns - $7.95 as of 7/2022
Bob L.

Came here for lunch on a Sunday. The place is self order (ordering done at one of two kiosk screens) and self seating as far as we could tell. Items we ordered as of 7/2022: - Beef burger - $6.95 - Very tender beef and the buns itself was also nice and fluffy. Definitely wouldn't call this a "burger" though. - Chicken Hand-Ripped Noodle in Soup - $13.95 - Missus loved this one. She chose the "Spicy" level and says it was just perfect. Noodles are tender BUT there is a lot of it and due to the thickness it can be quite heavy carb wise. Loved the soup however! - Steam mini pork buns - $7.95 - Not bad but nothing mind blowing. Buns itself had a slight sweetness to it which paired well with the soy dipping sauce it came with. Probably wouldn't get this again. - Beef Hand-Ripped Noodle - $13.95 - Same beef as the beef burger above and same hand pulled noodles. The beef again has great flavor and tenderness. Noodles are good but will get quite filling quite fast due to the thickness to them. Can't compare this to the Xi'an Famous Foods locations since they were closed but overall we were satisfied with our meal here.

The ambiance and decor was nicer. Casual place with quick service and a good amount of seating. You can order at the kiosks and get your food quite quickly. The noodles didn't hold flavor well, but that's also the nature of the dish. The chicken was nicely seasoned and tasty. Overall, my meal felt average, and with the noodles, I had to really fight to make them taste like anything.

I've been craving this since I got to ny. This was close enough to my destination. You order on a machine. You can custom the spice level of the soup and what vegetables you want or if you want to add more of anything. The dumplings..I was surprised that it was kind of sweet. I'm not used to having a more sweet pork dumpling. Either way I think if you are in the area it's worth trying. Plus they have plugs lol charge things while you eat. The soup was very filling.

The flavor of the foods is good. The portion isn't too large and they serve super fast. I think everything is premade there. The thing is really the service. They still expect you to tip them, but you order foods yourself and you clean and put away dirty dishes yourself. The only service they offered was bring you the food. That just shows the tipping culture in the US is crazy. Oh, did I mention two of the three dishes we ordered they brought the wrong food?

this is very delicious and ur guys need to try sooo nice!and I really like it especially the nodlles

Food was so delicious! I had the beef noodle with rice noodles. I ordered it spicy and it was perfect. The noodles were chewy, the beef was so tender, and the sauce was so tangy and delicious. They were so sweet too -- I got too excited while I was eating and breathed in some sauce and started coughing uncontrollably and they gave me a free bottle of water!

Spicy wontons and cold cucumber salad. For lunch. The cucumbers were fine; the wontons were meh - not enough flavor/spice.

The special lunches come with a little fried rice, cold garlic flavored noodle, choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, and main side. My buddies all enjoyed their meals. The beef chow fun was also really good and beef was nice and tender. The xiao long baos were excellent and is comparable to any place in California like DTF. My friend had the chicken dumplings. He said they were okay. I thought they were overcooked. My steamed shrimp shumai were fine, but steamed, they didn't have much flavour. The edamame, on the other hand, had way too much when it should have almost none. I don't know if it was excess salt, MSG or something else, but not good. I should have sent them back. I hope this was just an off night for the kitchen.

The pacing of the meal for the quantity of food received seemed very rushed, and we didn't really have a chance to relax and enjoy any of the courses. However, the quality of the experience was a complete disaster particularly for the price. Clearly, the packed restaurant would disagree, but for the four of us anyway, we would not return. It started with the check in process at what felt like a long hotel front desk with multiple, self important hosts and hostesses overseeing your entrance to the cavernous bar/waiting area. One problem is the noise is so deafening that you can't really hear what they say to you but we check in a few minutes early and waited obediently in the bar area chatting. After about 30 minutes (15 after our reservation time), and watching numerous parties large and small who arrived after us be seated by the hostesses wandering through the dimly lit space who peer quizzically and ask your name, my husband went to ask for an update. (We joked that those vibrating lighted buzzers alerting when your table was ready would have been super helpful, but it was amusing to watch while we waited). It was clear they somehow lost track of us as she had him repeatedly spell our (not unusual) name. Anyway, after that, within 10 minutes after that we were taken downstairs to our seats (but not before standing awkwardly in the large dining area near packed tables waiting while our table was cleaned). Server with a heavy accent was kind and mostly helpful so none of this is on him. The busser who managed to spill half a pitcher of cold water on my husband's back, soaking his shirt and jacket and barely apologizing, is a whole other story. We managed to get a glass of his mediocre Cabernet comped for the experience. If I sound annoyed, I guess I still am. I had high hopes for a fun and tasty experience in a cool part of the city and it just wasn't.

Then we got a handful of apps - everyone else swore by all the ones they'd had - but I just tried the Salt & Pepper Shrimp and... sweet baby Jesus, this little plate had a wicked amount of flavor from every angle.  "Aggressively seasoned" might be an understatement.  Wild. Onto the mains and I ventured towards their Spicy Drunken Noodle (my go-to whenever I'm hitting a Thai restaurant on my home turf) and... yeah, you probably guessed it - incredible. Not the biggest portion but they made every single component sing with flavor. With so much going on - of course I needed to indulge with another drink (hey, I wasn't driving!). There were six of us, it came to about $100 a person... welcome to NYC. But we did get a wide selection of plates/food and those two drinks accounted for about $40 of my tab. (And you'll never see such a heavy wine pour at a restaurant... they filled the glass almost to the rim - which was not even something I'd do for myself when I'm home.) Definitely recommended.
