Big cakes and good chile. Not a bad place to stop in for breakfast. Service was okay, they sat us in the back and forgot about us, but the waitress was nice and helped us once they realized. Overall the atmosphere was old...timey.

Mexican omelette, beans, hash browns

Breakfast this morning was delicious! I had the Mexican omelette recommended by our waitress Motty (?). She was really friendly and attentive. We had to wait a bit since two other breakfast spots were closed today so there was a line. Coffee was good and served quickly. Meals came out soon after. Husband had biscuits and gravy (huge portion) and my omelette is pictured. I tried the Christmas (both red and green chili) sauce on the side and especially liked the green. Very flavorful with a bit of heat. Worth the wait.

The food here was pretty good plus we had a great server. Size of the foods are quite large. One of the few breakfast spots that open early to start your day. They don't seat partial parties even when the restaurant is practically empty. Some past events must of scarred them enough to do this.

Overall a solid food experience. Came off season when few were in town. Has a party of 5 and one went to get gas down the street quickly. Bizarrely they wouldn't seat us until we had the full party. To be fair, they had many signs on the walls noting this policy and I'm sure it's relevant in peak season, but there was only one occupied table in the entire place when we came so it seemed a bit unnecessary. Anyway, food was pretty good. Eggs taste like eggs. Pancakes are huge. Prices are fair. I'd probably come back again if convenient.

Reuben sandwich and coleslaw on the red plate. Eggs Benedict & hash browns on the blue plate.

Good was good. It is a really small place, so expect a little wait. The Reuben could've had a few more toppings, but still good. The eggs Benedict was delicious!

This place had some old rustic charm with a lot of memorabilia to look at on the walls. This place has reasonable prices & good food!! We did have a 20 min wait but worth it.

Ok. I just want to say this place should be rated close to 5 stars for breakfast. Classic diner breakfast with a New Mexico flare. Had Classic Juevos Rancheros with red chili sauce. Spot on and delicious. Just the right amount of heat. Kinda biker vibe in the place but more fun than rough. Our server was strictly business, got our coffees hot and food was to the table fast. She checked on us regularly too. Go for a great, reasonably processed breakfast!

This is the Yelp information on the day that I was ready for a huge pancake with Blueberries! Thank you Shotgun Willie's for being open!

Seems like every time I come to Red River, no matter what day of the week I choose, Old Tymer's is closed. So disappointing!

Breakfast burrito and pancake. Both were delicious!

Me and my husband stopped by for breakfast. We had the breakfast burrito Christmas style and pancake both were delicious! I would definitely return.

1/3 eaten hubcap sized pancake

Old Tymer's Cafe is a tiny restaurant located on the main strip in Red River, NM. The service is fast and the Waitress is friendly. If you love pancakes, this is definitely the breakfast spot for you. They have pancakes that are so big, they could possibly win a size contest with a hub cap as an opponent. Be sure to confirm the pancake size before placing your order, you don't want to think you've order a normal size pancake and a huge one is served instead. Food Review: Pancake - giant sized pancake, fluffy and sweet, topped with whipped butter and syrup is delicious. Cheese Omelette with Sausage - omelette with cheddar cheese and chunks of sausage was average. It barely had any flavor. Hash Browns - undercooked, very bland. A sprinkle of salt did make them taste a little better. Wheat Toast - plain toast that you must butter yourself with the stiff, cold butter packets on the table. Talk about hard to spread. It was ok. Nothing to write home about. I hope to be there one day when some actually finishes off one of those hubcap sized pancakes. Too bad it defeated us.

Supreme pizza

Wife and I came for Pizza at 12:00 pm, the waitress was unfriendly. This is the first biker bar that has no alcohol. We ordered pizza supreme. More to come: Soggy crust bottom,, watery sauce, just okay in my humble opinion. We got our check and the unfriendly waitress charged us $3.00 for tap water. Are you skidding me? I complained about the $3.00 for tap water so they deducted it from our bill. Make sure you check your bill.

One pancake and biscuits and crazy with sausage.

It was about a 15 minute wait to get a table on a very busy Saturday afternoon. I am bumping up my review since it was a dog-friendly restaurant. Our server, Arthur, graciously brought me more water for my dog and offered me a bowl even though I already had both. For starters I had a Whiskey Smash ($14.75). I enjoyed it. I sampled a taste from my brother's beer flight ($18). My mom's Desperado Mexi Lager also. They were mostly enjoyable. Red apple cider was probably something I would have on the front porch. For lunch I had the BBQ brisket sandwich ($12.50) with fries, pickles, and onions. They did not skimp on the meat. There was BBQ at the table which I added because the brisket was a bit flavorless. I chuckled when our server brought the mac and cheese out to my ultra picky nieces. He stated to my sister-in-law that it was in fact the Kraft-style mac, but it wasn't. I mean maybe he should learn what that means first of all. But second... Can you believe those kids are so picky that they didn't eat a single bite? Eight dollars per bowl with a side. Wow. My kids would starve the rest of the afternoon if their food smelled and tasted half way decent. Lol. I can almost hear the mutterings at my parenting style. Hey at least I drank my overpriced whiskey cocktail. Because our party was so large, automatic gratuity of 18% was added to our ticket. The women's restroom was small and mostly clean, but awkward entering and exiting with other women and girls crammed inside. I did not like how tables in our area were left untouched long after other patrons left. If I had my choice, I would probably opt for an alternative place next time. I was not that impressed by the staff's overall indifference to all the patrons. RATING BREAKDOWN (3 stars overall, bumped up because they were dog-friendly!) Food: 4 | Service: 3 | Ambiance: 3 | Price: 3

Not long after that, several more parties arrived, and the restaurant quickly filled up with what appeared to be a dinner rush. We understand that things can get busy, and we were patient as we waited for our food. However, it ultimately took an hour and a half for our meal to arrive. What stood out the most, though, was the behavior of the male host as new customers continued to walk in. My family and I were genuinely surprised by how unwelcoming he was. He never smiled, showed very little warmth, and seemed almost irritated by the arrival of additional customers. He repeatedly told people they would have to wait an hour and a half to an hour and 45 minutes, and the way he delivered the message made it feel as though he was trying to discourage them from staying rather than welcoming their business. We understand that long wait times are sometimes unavoidable during a busy dinner rush, but there is a difference between communicating a wait time and making customers feel like an inconvenience. A friendly attitude and a little courtesy go a long way, especially for someone who is the first point of contact for the restaurant. When our food finally arrived, it was good, but honestly, it wasn't good enough to make up for the hour-and-a-half wait and the unwelcoming experience at the door. Unfortunately, the host's attitude left a lasting impression and took away from what could have been an enjoyable family dinner.

While in Red River, NM the Whiskey Bros happened upon a jewel of a restaurant. We were walking to…read morea certain planned destination but happened upon Brett's outdoor signage claiming to have prime rib. Prime rib, being what it is, instantly captivates the attention of any unassuming Whiskey Bro just as a flower captivates a bee. We were, as these things seem to happen, whisked into the restaurant on hopes and dreams that only sensual culinary satiation can provide. The let down that we experienced when the sweet waitress exclaimed that they were indeed out of their prime rib was an axe to our revived core. As culinary adventurism often requires, we determined that we would see things through. With a commitment to this ideal we would stay, order a bottle of red, and try to make the most of a bloody disaster. What followed provided shocks and surprises the wisest Whiskey Bro could never have hoped for. Often we must pull ourselves from the depths of a sensual culinary dive to gain a critical perch from which to judge a meal. We tried, but to no avail. The smorgasbord of steak, trout and lamb accompanied by various interestingly 'sauced' sides locked us into an olfactory journey only the best of critics could dissect. When we had the group realization that we could taste Key lime in the mushrooms our brains nearly exploded with awe. Everything before us was merely... complex and perfect. After the meal, our plates showing the magnitude of the destruction we laid upon them and us moaning after a battle hard won. Our kind waitress merely asked an otherwise unassuming question. "Dessert?" I don't exactly recall what the dessert was. Sensing our severe struggle with thinking in general, not to mention our limited capacity to merely communicate, our waitress ordered for us. She was so empathetic to our pain. It was a cake 'something' with ice cream. More than enough for three very large men. I only remember the frenzied attack that occurred after that first hesitant taste, the likes of which can be witnessed in zombie movies. If you are ever in Red River, New Mexico; or Taos, or anywhere in this corner of the world. Do yourself a favor and devote an evening to a serious exploration of Brett's Bistro. Pizza, salads, beer and wine all were good quality. The service had a litany of issues: Guests waiting at the door for 10 minutes or more waiting to be seated. No one apparently assigned or dedicated to busing tables. Only one person to run the bar who was also preoccupied with waiting on some tables and delivering food. No order control despite handheld electronics (What salads did you order the kitchen lost the ticket? Supreme without bell pepper? No. Well that's what the ticket said.) No one apparently in charge to monitor and direct activities despite overhearing the young lady waiting tables say this was her first day. I'm not in the food service business, but it seems to me that most of this is easily solved. Hire another person and make them host/bus person. Keep the bartender behind the bar and focus him on filling all drink orders. Put someone in charge. Yelp is telling me I haven't mentioned ambiance. It was appropriately fine. Two large screen TVs with season appropriate shows running (in this case Red Bull mountain biking). The upstairs location gives a decent view through large windows. The decor fits the mountain vibe. I would go again, but will give them some time to work on the service. Take out is always an option.
