Old School cafe is a community cafe based in the south bridge resource centre. It run by young people who are in training with the Cannongate Youth Project to develop skills in catering and customer service.
The cafe is on the second floor and there isn't wheelchair or buggy access but you can leave buggies on the ground floor. The cafe itself is fairly basic and as you'd expect from the name in part of an old school. The kitchen is open to the cafe so you can watch your food being prepared and the washing up being done.
I visited with a friend and her son for the Christmas menu. It was extremely good value at £8.95 for 3 courses including a soft drink. It was nice food and the salmon pate got extra approval from the toddler who at one point had both hands in it (sorry to other diners who had to watch). The highlight of the meal for me was the chocolate brownies with cream. Super tasty and the rest of the cakes also looked great.
Don't expect to eat in a hurry but it's part of the experience helping young people with there confidence and skills for employment. They were all friendly and tolerant of the smallest member of our table throwing stuff on the floor, running around a bit and generally being a toddler. There is a games room next door which I think we'll eat in next time. read more
