One of my general practices when travelling is avoiding the chain coffee shops and try something more local to the area/region. Wellington Coffee was conveniently located just across the street from our AirBnB so logically I had to give it a try. A tiny shop located downstairs, Wellington Coffee can easily be overlooked on the busy streets of Edinburgh. There's a few seats both inside and outside however, inside there was a nice sense of coziness and seclusion. The menu is straight forward as is the "minimalistic" pastry display (actually there's no display case at all lol). I desperately wanted to try the carrot cake I saw an online picture of unfortunately, they were sold out. I did have the opportunity to try the bacon scone. Oh my goodness did the scone meet and exceed my expectations! It was dense and buttery without leaving me in a food coma. It was also one of the most flavorful and moist scones I ever had. Couple the scone with the latte and I was set for my day. On my last morning in Edinburgh, I stopped by Wellington one last time and took 2 scones takeaway. This intimate coffee shop has a lower outside area that you see all over the city for businesses, apartments and coffee shops. Six tables and two umbrellas make up the darling lower "patio". Narrow stairs lead down to it. Inside you order. A busy counter greets you with all sizes of coffees. I ordered a long black. I learned afterward that it's an Americano with more water, therefore it tasted bitter. I would not recommend this weak coffee as I prefer a strong coffee, but not a roast. Very friendly service, but I wasn't super enthused with the scones. I guess it depends on personal preference, but I found it to be a little too sweet with the dried fruits. I wasn't a huge fan of the butter, but it's Scottish tradition to have butter. Seating and table space was quite limited, and there were no outlets to charge my dying phone. Not an issue on their part, but it was information that would have been helpful for solo travelers like me. read more

I've been going to Henderson's for a while now. It's not a place I go out of my way to get to, but it's the best option I'm aware of for a good quality cup of coffee if you're on George Street. The scones are tasty and crumbly, and they do offer clotted cream, and their cakes are quite lovely, but of course it's the coffee I go here for, as I'm not much of a sweet tooth. The coffee is on a whole absolutely decent, though not GREAT. I've never had a bad cuppa here, but I've also never had an exceptional one. If you're looking for a flat white and you're not a Starbucks or Costa fan, this will definitely be your best bet! Space-wise, it's pretty tiny and not particularly comfortable inside. I don't like seats with no backs as I end up hunched over and hurting, and the only seats that have any back rest here are the benches along the walls. Good thing the outside area provides extra space in fair weather and the chairs out there have back rests! Just a shame that in the winter months you're less likely to want to have a seat outside. A properly made (warm but not hot) flat white will be stone cold in five minutes even if it isn't raining. So... This isn't going to be a winter haunt for me, but in the summer it's got plenty of space and it's nice to watch the world go by on the streets above you. :) read more

The fruit scone was the star of the show for sure. Absolutely huge and for 50p more, came with an enormous amount of clotted cream and delicious plum jam. Truly outstanding! The shop is very small so seating is limited. The staff was friendly enough, but perhaps could have been a bit more so in my opinion. I know it's not their specialty, but perhaps they could offer a few more food options such as sandwiches. The carrot cake looked divine though! :) Would come back and recommend to anyone. I have a bit of an obsession with scones at the moment, and decided to visit Wellington Coffee after reading some positive reviews about their scones. Oh and coffee of course which I enjoy as well. So one Saturday morning I decided to walk to town and hit the shops - but before that I needed some energy. Wellington Coffee was the perfect stop over for this purpose. The place is very small but luckily I managed to squeeze myself into a window seat. They had a small selection of cakes which all looked delicious and homemade. I ordered a medium cappuccino and a fruit scone. My order was swiftly brought over and the coffee was obviously made with TLC - it had a beautiful decorative leaf motif and tasted lovely too. I instantly regretted going only for the 'medium' coffee as it was actually a rather smallish cup but hey, this is no Starbucks :) Then the scone.. Ooh la la. I enjoyed it a lot. It came with a cute little pot of raspberry jam and some butter. The scone was crumbly, but not too crumbly, Perfection on plate! Coffee and scone came to a total of just over £4, which perhaps is a bit steep - but considering the high quality I didn't mind. I will definitely return. read more

A very small, but also very delightful and fairly new island of coffee goodness on George Street. Descend down a mini flight of stairs and find yourself faced with the temptation of moist, (there's no other word) bumper slices of carrot cake topped with thick, creamy icing - usually it's carrot cake 1, Cheryl's pathetic attempt at dieting resistance - nil. I came here straight after I ran the Edinburgh 10k run last year, and basically downed a slice of cake in one, probably not what most people do post fitness effort, but I enjoyed it. Word about the awesome food and coffee here has spread fast, so you're quite pushed to get a seat at peak times, such as lunch time or all day on weekends, but there is seating outside, which is handy. Lots of Edinburgh University students I've noted, but a mix of clientele really, as business people have taken to popping in here too. Wellington Coffee has a cool, relaxed feel to it, and is certainly a more attractive, stylish option than many of the coffee chains on the same street. read more

Oh, it all makes sense now! Everything slots together nicely. Here's me, thinking I'm going round Edinburgh finding all these coffee shops that serve amazing flat whites when it's so hard to come by, when in actual fact they're all owned by the same guy! I'm talking about this place, Kilimanjaro, Press Coffee and Project Coffee. However, that doesn't stop this place being my favourite of the bunch. I had a little chat with the barista (who is very friendly, by the way), and she was telling me about their quest to have great coffee shops in Edinburgh. Well, they're doing pretty well. The coffee here is tremendous. It's a sort of basement coffee shop, Wellington coffee. Which means if you sit by the window, you get a brilliant people watching spot onto the invariably busy George Street. Cool music too. I could spend all day every day here. read more

This is really a spectacular coffee shop. It's unassuming, yet steeped in coffee lore. Today, for example, I had a lovely Square Mile roast Red Brick espresso, followed by a Has Bean coffee roast Honduras Finca Santa. These folk love coffee, and making good coffee. They love you loving coffee even more. While sipping and tasting I learned a little more about crema, about coffee settling a little after a roast, and a little more about single origin coffees. They're just as happy for me to walk in and say "flat white please" as they are "what special coffee do you have in your middle grinder today?". Love it. read more

This place is the place to go for not just good coffee but amazing coffee! In fact it's my favourite in Edinburgh. It's tucked in the corner of George and Hanover street and it has a few tables inside and out. They don't mess about, service is quick and efficient and my flat white was presented beautifully. I had a cheeky wee bit of tiffin to go alongside and it was really really good... Biscuity chocolatey and fruity! I really like Wellington, but I've not actually had their coffee yet so I'm reserving the final star. As has been said, it's tiny. Honestly, it's really not "eat/drink-in" size - it's much better suited for take away. Having said that, I think they may actually have outside seating for those 8 days a year when it's not baltic outside so that could be nice. Every time I've come here I've had a positive and realistic interaction with a member of staff - ie, they're nice but not in a fake way - and I've loved what I've ordered. I seem to recall that their brownie was the BEST EVER, and this morning's chai absolutely hit the spot. I also liked how they had descriptions on their coffee beans. Their decaf is described as being actually nice, as well as a number of fancy sounding tasting notes. Their other beans have tasting notes as well. This is something I've not seen elsewhere and I really liked the touch. I don't come here often but every time I do I think I should. They have good coffee (according to my friends) and also serve good loose tea. I've had their brownies which are a really tasty. OK, can someone please tell me why I haven't tried this place before? It is by far the best coffee, in my opinion, in Edinburgh. Yes, it is a small place, and yes, there are only a few seats inside. But don't let that put you off. The simplicity of their menu tells you what they put all their effort into. Good coffee. No, make that exceptional coffee. It has that creaminess to it, that makes you realise what people harp on about when they go all gooey about flavours in coffee. Their milk, if you have a milk based drink, is always at a perfect temperature and expertly poured to give it that perfect consistency every time. They have your usual suspects on the menu, they have a range of tea's which look like they come in a nice glass teapot if you are sitting in. and they have freschly made scones and a few other sweet things, which are a treat if you like a good scone with your brew. Across the road they have the corporate behemoth, which frankly, need to come and pay this place a visit to learn how to serve coffee. The staff are casual, friendly, and recognise you when you've been in more than once or twice, which I have to admit to doing now everyday on the way to work. Outside, they have some seats on the corner of George St and Hannover St. With a cup of their finest in your hand, if you are lucky, the sunshine beating down on you and with the passers by, it makes for THE most perfect spot to people watch in town too! what more could you ask for? read more

When I lived in Edinburgh, this was a daily stop on the way to work. The coffee here is AMAZING! Sitting in, the table options are a bit limited, it's quite a small space. I have sat in before though and it is absolutely fine, just maybe not at the weekend. I've tried a few of their coffees, any of the ones with milk have quite a nice natural sweetness to them (from the milk I'm guessing), but the black coffee/espresso is to die for. Easily the best I've had in Scotland. They have quite a different mix of roasts, the 'sweetie shop' one they did (don't know if this is still available) was outstanding. There's a nice selection of cakes on offer, but special shout out to the scones which are MASSIVE! So so tasty. If you ever find yourself in the city wanting a coffee, avoid all the chains and head here, you won't regret it! read more

This is a lovely little place serving exquisitely strong coffee (I do love a strong coffee!!) and the tastiest cheese and bacon scone I've ever had! I was fortunate to get a table seat and as i was by myself didn't mind sharing the table, as clearly there are no riff raff allowed in here! ;) I wish it was bigger but I guess it would lose some of its charm. I wish it did more food, but it's a frickin coffee shop..! I don't know what's stopping me giving them 5 stars. I want to, i do, but I feel like I need to test them out more. Will definitely be back! This place really does deserve 5 stars for coffee. Always expertly made, using a delicious blend of beans and milk foamed beautifully. However I've visited 4 or 5 times wanting to sit and read a book, but due to its popularity have never actually managed to. It's not their fault, that their beautiful characterful basement venue is small, and it's great to see people supporting local business instead of going across the road to one of the many chains, but my goodness it is so frustrating to never get a seat. I mean never. My advice is to expect the worse (and get a takeaway coffee) and hope for the best (a lovely window seat to watch the world go by). read more

It seems really difficult at the moment to find anywhere in Edinburgh that DOESN'T have Artisan Roast so Wellington Coffee is very refreshing in that it is breaking the mould. The space inside the cafe itself is tiny which could be struggle on a busy day but the coffee they have here is delicious! The scones......... oh man. They are a simple delight. Cheese and Bacon. They won my heart straight away. Staff seemed lovely, if maybe quite alot of them for such a small wee shop?! All in all. I love this place. This is a proper coffee shop. Found Wellington Coffee through recommendations on a coffee blog and it did not disappoint. Very small place, in a central location, with just 10-15 seats or so indoors (there are same tables outside as well but since it is Scotland it means that most of the time those cannot be used anyway.). At Wellington they serve coffee from Square Mile so it is of course great coffee - the Synesso machine also ensures that the equipment is good enough. The times I've been there the people behind the machine have also know what they are doing. Had some excellent espressos and also good cortados here and actually think they are a notch above Artisan Roast. The downside here is that they do not offer any filter coffee - love places with a good selection of single origin filter coffees. I did also have the scones here and they were also good, not a reason in itself to visit but if here for the coffee and a bit hungry do try the scones as well. A minor annoyance was the service which was slightly arrogant and almost had an attitude of that they were doing you as a customer a favor for serving you. Still the coffee was good enough for me to go here several times during my last visit to Edinburgh. read more
