We found a true gem! A local told us to check this place out and I am so grateful we took her advice. We almost missed it and let me tell you, this is a MUST SEE!!! It is the oldest store in GA! Built in the 1800's with its original storefront (signs and all). Walk inside and continue your step back in time with antique cash register, pharmacy bar, crank telephone, etc. The ambiance is sure to delight your spirit. They also have nostalgic penny candy that brought me back to my childhood. If Bill is there, he's likely telling old stories, entertaining shoppers as he pours them tastes of various ciders. My two favorite were the Muscadine and the black cherry. YUM!!! My mom loved the peach. Back in the day, the original owners sold the place to a couple from Norway so the middle of the store has an entire section of Scandinavian delicacies. The entire staff was as delightful as the rest of the store. If Linda is there, say hello and tell her how beautiful she is! She made our day. From the moment we pulled up I knew I'd love this place. Pickers out front on a chilly morning, sang a song for my baby. Bill greeted us and provided us with a tasting of all of their ciders. We went home with one of each. Tons of fun food, provisions, and handmade items to shop. The farmers cheese is not to be missed. Next door is a small cafe with rotating specials. We were there for lunch and had a super fresh salad, an apple croissant (to die for), the potato salad, and a buffalo chicken sandwich. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Fun store in the foothills of GA. The longest running general store in the state, with an intriguing back story and prior owners. We stopped in for a break before heading on to Helen. The little sandwich stop next door was perfect for a quick bite for our large crowd. If we are ever back in the area, we'll certainly stop in and enjoy earning ourselves at the fire. Lovely shop with many different aspects to it. You walk in to an ancient store front that has not been change since it was put in. You are met by a man who will explain everything about this store to you and it's history. Had some of the Farmers Cheese they sell and it was very good. There is a small deli attached to them and has some quick sandwiches to go along with a very tasty Black Cherry Soda. I had the chicken Salad on Croissant and it was very tasty. Discovered this true gem on the way to Helen from Cherokee over a year ago. It's in an original store building from the 1800's and if I recall has been run continuously as a store since then. It has old, interesting memorabilia in the front part of the store. Proceed through for unique food, clothing, shoes, etc. We especially loved the farmers cheese, sourdough rye crackers and ginger snaps. We purchased all three along with several pairs of the softest socks ever for my granddaughters for Christmas. As you might expect, clothing and shoes are pricey, but unique. The service was top notch! They offered samples of the cheese, crackers, ginger snaps, and an apple cider vinegar concoction. Since we were traveling to Helen for dinner then back to Cherokee, I was concerned about the cheese being in the car. The sales lady was so accommodating in providing a bag of ice and even a make-shift cooler (a box that would provide a little insulation). It was perfect and our cheese was still cold several hours later. Will definitely stop by again when in the area. This is a must see general store. When you first walk in, the front of the store is set up more like a museum, with display cases full of interesting items sold years ago. The back area of the store has the items you can actually buy: all types of candy, soaps, souvenirs, honey, jams, etc. On the day that I went, they had samples of cheese and some type of Nordic drink. I get the novelty of this place but the food (sandwiches) are just OK. The chicken salad was mush with no texture and too much mayo. My friend's pastrami was just OK as well. They were out of the broccoli slaw. Bread was fresh but undercooked. Won't be back unless I need a cookie. read more

What a hidden little gem. We went here for breakfast that turned into lunch as we stopped at 2 places before - Dottie's (which Yelp app said was open but they are closed on Tuesdays) and Hofer's which had a long line that did not move in the 5+ minutes we waited so we left. Glad that all happened as we would not have found The Old Sautee Store. We ordered soup and sandwiches. The soup was a chicken and wild rice with a hint of lemon. So very good! I got the ham and cheese and my wife got the special - a turkey of some kind. They were both excellent. The cheese is something I have never heard of and is sold in the store. Very smooth. We plan to buy some on our way out of Helen at the end of our trip. Take your time in the store, very cool place with many unique items. I enjoyed my experience at the store and got a lot of really fun things. The ciders were delicious and we had a tasting. The farmers cheese was amazing... we enjoyed that every night with wine back at our mountain cabin. The only thing that we thought was super weird was The little place next-door was closed for breakfast and we asked if there was anywhere else that we could go. They told us to go to the dugout which is about 10 minutes down the road while there is a coffee shop with fresh biscuits and breakfast right across the street that they didn't tell us about. I don't know if they're in an argument with those people or what the deal was, but that was very strange not to tell us that there was a coffee shop right across the street when their own restaurant was closed. read more

I'm a city person not easily impressed by much but this little store and accompanying deli are delightful. First and most importantly, they are taking coronavirus VERY seriously. Total mask compliance and multiple signs warning you not to come in without a mask. The deli has you wait outside for your order The store had a lot of local and specialty items. I got some cheese and candies for my kids. The staff was so warm and welcoming. Lots of history. I turned over a few items and saw many made in the USA. The deli is simple but great. I agree with BJ's post! We would come from Athens, GA to spend the day in the area. We loved their homemade sandwiches. We went there 2 weeks ago and saw their new menu and walked out. I didn't want a premade sandwich. New owners have made changes and sometimes those changes can be good this one however is not! We greatly miss this as our go-to place in the area for our sandwich stop. Once a lunch spot staple in Sautee, the new pre-made deli menu at the Old Sautee Store Market is a major disappointment for area regulars and visitors. Read many of the below reviews and you'll see folks loved the former menu at this unique lunch spot--beware, it has completely changed. Formerly, patrons enjoyed farmer's cheese, quality Boar's Head meats on made-to-order, customized sandwiches on a variety of breads baked fresh daily, soups and creative grilled daily sandwich specials. All of that has been eliminated and now replaced with "stock" sandwiches pre-made every morning on white bread, wrapped in Saran Wrap, sitting all day and handed to customers without any customization options. The pre-made options are few--bologna, turkey, chicken salad and pimento cheese. Kids can "enjoy" packaged Uncrustable "sandwiches". The changes are shocking and we have heard from many that they had the same reaction as us--viewed the new menu and turned around and walked out. We were regulars at this deli for 12 years and unfortunately feel the changes are so poorly incorporated that we won't be venturing there as a family or with friends any longer--an end of an era. We hope after a few months, the Old Sautee Market re-analyzes and maybe makes a change. We'd certainly head back, if so. It was such a unique and fun place to eat lunch as a family or with friends. For those visiting Sautee Thursday-Saturday, head across the street to Sheilah's Market and Deli where delicious homemade sandwiches on artisan breads, homemade sides such as potato salad, pasta salad, broccoli salad, a large variety of homemade desserts and soups have won her accolades locally and state-wide as she was recently named a hot spot for lunch in a state-wide publication. This rating is for the store, and the attached sandwich shop. We visited this place seeking some nourishment after checking out a local winery. Service was friendly, and sandwiches are made to order, which may slow things down a bit when they're busy. Be patient. We found the sandwiches to be fresh and tasty. I wonder if they bake their own bread. They even have a selection of Boylan's sodas, Cheer Wine soda, Mayfield ice cream, and some cookies & things. So sit back and take the opportunity to relax in the hills for a while. Then, when you're done, visit the shop next door. This place has apparently been here forever, and it seems like it's part museum inside. They're known for their Swedish Farmer's Cheese and a warmed grape-drink called Glögg. Both are delicious. You'll want to take some home. They've also got a few "outdoorsy" clothing lines, toys for the children, and some jewelry... Up front there's a big collection of baskets filled with "old-fashioned" candies. We found staff here to be very friendly, and will happily stop off to grab a bite when we're next in the area. Be warned! If you used to love this deli and come all the time like I did, they have entirely changed everything to very few prepackaged sandwiches. They don't do made to order anymore, no more fresh produce, no bread options. Soups only served on weekends. Destroyed one of my favorite spots. This was the highlight of the Helen area for my wife and I. We had never been to Helen before and while the Bavarian themed town is fun to browse around and find new eating places, the scenery that makes it a Bavarian village theme seems just a tad fake (facades, like you would find in Disneyland) So when we found this authentic historic store and cafe just outside Helen by about 4-5 miles, we stopped in. Wow what a fantastic find! The buildings are historic treasures with the old gas pump out front, the big covered front porch with rocking chairs, and American flags flying proudly on each post. Inside the store, most all of the left side is all historic artifacts, old store items from long ago, fully displayed, not to buy but to view and enjoy. Then on the right the store began. They have snacks, food, clothing, jewelry and other various items in the store. They had some wonderful Swedish imported cheese samples that were yummy! The lady let us know that right next door was their cafe shop which served sandwiches with this same cheese on it. So after shopping in the store, we went next door. There was the cutest shop, another historic building with a sod roof. The indoor eating area was small (perhaps enough for a dozen people but outside were tables. Their veggie sandwiches are wonderful! They offer 4 or 5 types of fresh bread to build it with. They have meat sandwiches but we are vegetarian so the veggie sandwich was perfect and super yummy! The veggies were fresh and crisp. The cookies they bake there and were fresh and chewy! They had Inkos bottled teas which I wasn't familiar with but turned out to be refreshing and very tasty! We enjoyed the food so much that we came back another day and ate there again. If you miss this store/cafe while staying in Helen, you will miss the jewel of the area! If you enjoy historic buildings and items and fresh wonderful sandwiches, this place is a must-see experience, IMHO! read more
