Even the employees we interacted with were friendly. The location is great with several things nearby. After we cashed out, we walked around back to see the trout and falls, then next door to the coffee roaster before going across the street to the winery and antique store. A must stop when you visit Helen. So many fresh food items like corn meal, grits, bread flours etc. Make sure to take time to go out back and listen to the pleasant sounds of the small rapids in the river behind the building. They also have a lot of miscellaneous other items like jams, jellies, candies etc. The staff was very helpful answering all of our questions. A very historic building as well. Very cool store. Lots to look at but I brought a group of people with disabilities up there and we weren't greeted or told to have a good day. Nothing. Not that wheelchair accessible. It's so close to the white line of the road where you bring a wheelchair up. There is also no way to go down to feed the fish if you are in a wheelchair. We spent a day in Helen on our way home from Murphy, NC. My cousin had read about this place and we thought it sounded interesting so we stopped in. It is a working mill that was established in the 1870s and they still use the original stones to make flour, biscuit mix, cornmeal, grits, and more which I thought was really cool! There are lots of different products from the granary part and then also things like jams, salsas, hot sauces, syrups, and a lot of other things. It's a perfect spot to pick up a unique gift or to bring home something to cook with for yourself. My cousin and I both grabbed a bag of their Grandma's Biscuit and Pancake Mix. It even came with a little biscuit cutter which I thought was a nice touch. I'll have to add a photo and update when I make some biscuits and pancakes! Along with the store having an interesting story and cool products, there's also a really pretty view of the river behind the shop. Also, huge shout out to the nice staff. We got there very close to closing time and they still let us in and allowed us to walk around for a bit which was very kind of them. If you're in the Helen area, you should definitely stop by and check this place out! read more

Okay, so I didn't realize this was an actual mill! I get there and it's a legit mill! I immediately was impressed. The inside isn't large, but they've got a lot of stuff inside, from jellies to funnel cake mix, oats and biscuit batter. They really have it all. I picked up some oats to make at home. A large bag that hopefully I don't mess up making. They also sell a few other random kitchen items that you probably don't need, but overall the store has a ton of great gifts if you or someone you know is into baking. I'm more into eating the finished product, but it would be fun to try baking these items for sure. From my understand you can stop here and actually see them working on the grains and making things right there at the mill which would be a cool experience. That wasn't happening when I was there, but would love to see that one day. Parking- I would back in because pulling out of that lot into the main road was a little difficult especially if it's a busy time of year. The staff was great and although I haven't made my items yet, I'm very much looking forward to doing so. read more

May 2022 - We stopped by to do some shopping and watch some of the giant fish in the river. Awesome little business! We picked up two bags of gravy mix. I call it "magic dust"! It turns to thick gravy in seconds and is excellent! The staff was very friendly! read more

I come to this area yearly, but decided to see some other places this year. This place reminded me of my granny's and her home cooked cornbread and biscuits from scratch! This place is rustic and cute, Very friendly, knowledgeable staff, free tasting so don't miss this part, so yummy...I got skooled and you can see the corn meal being grinded, I was simply amazed on the process. The whole spot was scenic and educational, lots of wandering and reading. Of course I did a little bit of shopping. Make sure you got out back to see the dam, fish feeding station, so pretty and relaxing. Tip: Make sure you stop, it's across from the Habersham Winery you can't miss it. read more

Definitely worth a stop if you're in Helen! The mill still functions and produces the grains for their products! It's like a step back in time. No plumbing, no a/c, wooden floors. This is a great place to spend a few hours. Located amongst a few historical places and across from a winery, a perfect place to explore. Nestled against the Chattahoochee River, this place was a great place to see how grain was pummeled back in the day. Only shame on our visit this time was of every single place we visited over 2 days in Helen, they were the only ones with workers not wearing masks. So glad we actually got to stop here in person! For years we've been getting deliveries from friends and family who picked us up grits and pancake mix from Nora Mill. The shop itself is rustic and cute. It's cluttered and rickety in an endearing way. It sits in a beautiful spot right along a creek which you can view from the back deck. There was a fish feeding station which my kids were disappointed was empty. I was disappointed that will all the goods they did not sell steel cut oats. They had more processed oats but not the healthier steel cut ones. We still picked up some of their pancake mix and yellow speckled grits which are both fabulous. Also, beware of some of the "country" items you buy. I picked up on of the speckled Americana type serving ware only to see "Made in China" on the back and quickly put it down. Bummer that they don't carry all authentic, local stuff. read more

We stopped in at Nora Mill Granary on a whim while driving by on vacation. We originally drove right by, but quickly stopped and turned around. It simply looked interesting and the parking lot was full, so we thought there must have been something going on. The granary was a full fledged mill. The staff was busy grinding meal and flour just as it had been done years before while kids from very young to very old watched with fascination. What a great experience! While there you can purchase grains they make along with a huge variety of interesting gadgets, jellies, condiments, canned edibles...just everything! We picked up some Georgia Ice Cream (grits) and some of the granary's fish batter which also is used for fried green tomatoes, onion rings etc. and some Rhubarb jam - OMG every thing we bought was amazing! If you haven't had stone ground grits - you have been missing out. The batter mix tasted a bit salty when we mixed it up, but we've made friend onion rings, battered mushrooms, cauliflower and broccoli and they all turned out wonderfully and were seasoned perfectly with nothing additional needed. The rhubarb jam is just perfect. My grandma couldn't have made it better. We enjoyed our purchases so much that we found their site online and stocked up on several additional items. We ordered these during the height of COVID 2020 and were amazed that they arrived within a few days!! If you are in the area - definitely worth the visit! read more

They use stone-ground flours both wheat and corn meal, and they have their own pre-packaged blends of cornbread, spoonbread and several varieties of wheatbread and rye flour, etc. There's also an interesting assortment of cast iron cookwear and some attractive kitchen gifts. We spent more than we intended here; compared to so much of touristy Helen, the Mill seems "real." read more

Wowzers. I cannot believe I am the FTR this place. Nora MIlls has been a fixture up here for a good while. It sits in a beautiful streamside gristmill on the bank of the Chattahoochee just south of Helen. I am not a fan of Helen, but I love this place. I always walk away with bags (yes, proper flour bags and sacks) of fresh ground cornmeal and grits and wonderfully milled flours of many sorts. Of course, it's "touristy" to an extent, but I have complete confidence in the results I get with fresh, local products. People want to know the "secret" of my caramel cake, my cornbread, and my creamy grits. Good, fresh, pure ingredients are a great start. read more

Not only is this one of the most quaint and beautiful grist mills in the country, the manager/operator is only too happy to tell you all about the whole mill process. He was taught by the original operators os the mill and continues the tradition today. It's a great history lesson along with all the samplings and products! read more
