Fred's Famous Peanuts has existed for over 40 years. They sell all sorts of jams, jellies, sauces, honey, and fruit. However, their claim to fame is fried peanuts. On our way to Anna Ruby Falls, we decided to stop by this shop and explore. Outside they had samples of seven different apple varieties as well as boiled and fried peanuts. Their Cajun and original fried peanuts were so good that we instantly bought a few bags. The store employee was very friendly and told us about the town of Helen and nearby cities. Inside the store has an ambiance of an old timey southern store selling quality hand made food products. I recommend stopping by Fred's and getting some good quality goodies for yourselves and as gifts. read more

It's worth a stop, just do it. Immediate samples upon walking in which helped me decide what I wanted when I walked in. The guys were friendly and the service was quick. I ate some of my peanuts immediately and then put them in the fridge and they were good hot and cold. The only thing I regret is waiting until the last day of my trip to stop by. read more

So, I think the title of this establishment is accurate. But, I really think it ought to be Fred's peanuts are the best! I purchased a bag of fried peanuts which was recommended by the fellow behind the service table. I tried a boiled peanut and I found it to be very mushy and not the least bit satisfying/tasty. However, the fried peanuts were simply amazing. They were crunchy, fresh tasting, and seasoned, although I don't know exactly with what seasoning, but I need to get some more of these peanuts because they were the best! Nicely done! read more

Visiting Helen/Cleveland from Charleston we stumbled across Fred's on our way to the State park. Wow. I get Cajun boiled peanuts almost every weekend and these were by far the best. Perfectly cooked, flavor penetrated the shell, and had great flavor. We also purchased some cool hand made pottery-cups and some local honey. Very friendly folks too. read more

It is not a restaurant but a cool little spot on the edge of town with various things like peanuts, apples, etc. My wife and I stopped in and loaded up on various peanuts, roasted in the shell, no shell and boiled peanuts. On the way to Anna Ruby Falls, there is what would be anywhere else, just a little stand, but Fred's Famous Peanuts is HUGE. There are some amazing soft sculpture dolls out front. The scent of roasting and boiled peanuts and of course the pork rinds. I ended up picking up one cajun/spicy pork rind bag and one plain. The cajun/spicy ones were delicious, but the plain ones were .. well they tasted like the oil was rancid. Something about them were off. Apples, all kinds of peanuts (the peanut brittle is excellent) and boiled peanuts (I LOVE them) perfectly tender and salted just right, ciders (the peach apple cider is really good, but very sweet but we bought some!) and all kinds of homemade jams and jellies. I'm totally nuts for Fred's Famous Peanuts. I drove by it about six times before we were finally able to stop, which was driving me nuts. There's plenty of parking for peanuts once you get there, and the entire place is a bit nutty with all of the decorations that they have throughout the store. I don't think I met Fred though, but there were some strange mannequin looking people who were watching me and waved at us as we drove away, which was a bit nutty. We ended up buying some peanut brittle, fried nuts, boiled nuts, and muscadine cider, which is a grape and not a nut, so that was kind of nuts, but we bought it anyway. Most of the nuts come in regular flavor and Cajun flavor, and they let you sample the heck out of their nuts, so you can be sure to purchase the correct nuts when the time comes to buy something. They also sell pork rinds, which are also not a nut, but I'm not complaining because I dig on swine. read more

When you buy food out of a ramshackle hut off the side of the road you're going to get one of two things. Either fantastic, authentic food, or hepatitis A. Thankfully, Fred's has the former. (They could have the latter, but since I didn't lick anything, I couldn't tell you for sure) To me, this is the only thing worth going to Helen for. The honey and pork rinds (not a singular product, but rather, two separate ones. Although now that I think about it....) are worth the drive alone. Peanuts are peanuts, and I can't really tell the difference, but fried pork skin is a delicate art, and Fred's has some of the best around. We stopped in here on a recent visit to Helen after driving by. This is a quaint old fashioned looking stand that sells a variety of peanuts, snacks, jams and jellies. It's not very large but there is quite a lot packed in the space they have. The entrance way was staffed with a nice lady who greeted people as they walked up. She was also serving samples of their boiled peanuts and some other items. We ended up buying a scoop of boiled peanuts (good but a bit under-seasoned, I solved this at home by soaking in a brine for a few hours), fried peanuts (never had these before and they were very good, with some type of seasoning on them as well) and some Muscadine jelly (haven't tried it yet). It was a very fun stop and definitely worth a visit if you're in the Helen area. read more

You've just gotta' go by Fred's if you're in Helen. In a town that is crazy artificial, Fred's place is authentic. It's a small roadside stand where Fred -- who's a talkative, entertaining character -- sells a variety of peanuts, ciders, cowboy hats, frozen lemonade, honey and what have you, all at lower prices than you'll find at nearby souvenir stands and stores. There are salted peanuts, boiled peanuts, cajun nuts, etc., and you can sample them. In fact, you can sample them until you get filled up while you are busy talking to Fred. It's a fun place to take a break, and those nuts are tasty. His store is located just off Highway 75 north of Helen where you turn to the right to go to Unicoi State Park. We encountered Fred's nephew who now runs the business. Talk about personable and amiable! He offered a sample of a wide range of products (cajun boiled peanuts, regular boiled peanuts, pecan brittle, peanut brittle, some cider that I can't remember). I walked out with pecan and peanut brittle, a bag of cajun boiled peanuts (this is a bit salty), and a bottle of the habanero hot sauce. Noms. We stopped by this place on our way from visiting Anna Ruby Falls. It seemed to get a lot of hype and had quite a flow of traffic as well! We got the regular boiled peanuts and the cajun boiled peanuts. I have to admit that while they were decent fare as far as boiled peanuts go, they weren't quite living up to the hype. I don't know if it's because I am spoiled on the boiled peanuts you can get at most road-side stands further north (on your way to the Tallulah Gorge area) or if my expectations were just higher from the local hype. They just weren't that impressive. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the peanuts, but there was nothing extraordinary about them either. They had an odd kind of flavor to them as well, which was not what I was accustomed to when it comes to boiled peanuts. The cajun peanuts were definitely better than the plain and masked that odd taste I couldn't get over. I don't know what exactly they're boiling with the peanuts but it was a flavor I was not keen on. Personally, I've had better from little one-off roadside stands here in my home county (Rabun). But if you've never had boiled peanuts and want the 'experience' these are just as good as any for providing that! Try the cajun if you like a little kick! As an aside, my nephew got the peanut brittle and loved it. read more

I vacillated between a 4 and a 5 for Fred's. In the end, as you can see, it was a 5. First of all, the pricing at Fred's is less than the touristy flea market thing around the corner. Though I took a liking to Bobby rdown there. He was very pleasant and an interesting chat. Fred's nuts are less salty. Yep, I said that. I'll say it again just in case you didn't read it right the first time. Fred's nuts are less salty. In addition to the classic boiled peanuts, Fred sells the same cider and honey as the competitor around the corner but it's cheaper. Don't miss out on the peach apple cider. Tastes great by itself. Or get crazy and put a little, or a lot, of vodka in there for a nice happy hour treat. Fred also sells fresh eggs. He's got some hens 'round yonder and if you're lucky you can catch one of the roosters taking a swing at the one of the hens.
