ORIGIN: The Old Riverton Inn allows guests to stay and dine on the site of a circa 1796 stagecoach inn that once served Hartford-Albany travelers. LOCATION: I stayed one Friday night this fall as a splurge ($229 /night) with intention to become familiar with the inn and its namesake town and surrounding communities. The site is steps away from a river and town center, making the Old Riverton Inn an ideal destination for those looking to explore the charming town or fly fish. AMENITIES: The inn preserves the availability of food and drink through a ground floor tavern. Lunch and dinner are offered at the Royal Coachman Tavern (check its Yelp page), but breakfast, conventionally provided to inn guests, is limited to an unattended counter with baked goods, single serve coffee maker, and dry cereal. While this might be ideal for early rising visiting fly fishers, it is not aligned with a conventional inn experience of hot breakfast. ACCOMMODATIONS: There are ten rooms located on the second and third floor of the inn. Guests may select specific rooms through the inn's website. Decor can be described as "shabby chic", with evidence of time reflected in the scattering of scuffs on vintage furniture, peeling print block wallpaper, and chipped paint on trim. Portable heaters in the closets and AC units in the windows are provided so that guests can modify room temperature. PARKING: To my surprise on site parking is not guaranteed to anticipated inn guests upon arrival. I arrived at 5 PM and found lot full, with six cars already parked along the emergency shoulder of State Route 20. While checking in an employee directed me to park in the emergency shoulder (safe/legal?) and assured me that I would be able to get a parking spot by time tavern closed at 9 PM. I appreciate that the current owner, Sherice Levan-Bennett, solicits guest feedback. I suggested dedicated parking for the anticipated overnight guests to facilitate easy unloading and a safe and relaxing experience. TIPS: Check out is early (10 AM). The third floor is quieter than second floor when the Royal Coachman Tavern is open for business. read more

This historic charming inn by the river is clean and comfortable. Our second floor room had a fireplace and the most comfortable bed. The staff was helpful and friendly. Their delicious food and local beer is served with a hometown feel. Great bartender! read more

Wife and I went there last minute for a late lunch. We happened to be in the area. Food and atmosphere was great. Such an old building which makes it so country. Reminds being in the old west. Chicken pot pie was the bomb. read more

Quaint, comfortable and delicious is the best way to describe our stay. We were provided a very early check-in to accommodate a wedding we were attending. The bartender Lynn was very friendly as she checked us in, told us all about the continental breakfast, fridge full of water and other items for us and the wifi password while showing us to the room. Sherice has done an amazing job of maintaining the old world charm of this Inn built over 2 centuries ago. Its beautiful and the old furniture décor was like being in a museum where you can touch the displays. We were able to make it back before the Tavern downstairs closed and it was PACKED. We dropped our things upstairs and made it down to two of the few seats left at the bar for some food. Lynn was there again, super friendly and attentive with a full bar. We had the ribs and chicken pot pie which were fantastic and surprisingly huge portions. This seemed to be the standard for all of the food we saw come out while there though. The staff and clientele were all friendly and having a great time which made the end of our night just that much better. The beds! The Inn is historic, some of the furniture are beautiful antiques, the beds are not. My wife struggles to sleep well in hotels, and this was the best night of sleep she's ever had in one. Huge pillows with a featherbed and "buttery soft" sheets and comforter were all she could talk about the next morning. To the point that I emailed Sherice with what exactly the pillows and linens were so we could buy them for our bed at home. She happily obliged. If you're in the area and looking for a place to stay or eat that's unique but wonderful, I highly recommend it. read more

I do recommend the Riverton Inn at lunchtime. It's extremely casual and the wings were good. The waitress was a little bit. Shall I say not so nice but she did her job. My husband said the peanut butter hamburger was delicious. read more

Place was clean, well kept and our room was very spacious and cozy. When we arrived at check in 330/4pm the tavern was busy and we were greeted by Danamarie who was polite and friendly but seemed rushed. She showed us our room and then disappeared. We had to ask for wifi password and we were never told of fresh coffee/tea in the morning. They do not serve breakfast anymore, which I discovered after we booked it. Completely my fault since I assumed they did. When my husband booked the room he wanted to make reservations at the tavern but was told he didn't need them. Unfortunately that evening a few large parties arrived and there were no tables available at 6. They were able to accommodate us at 730. Adam and Ashley apologized numerous times as they were not expecting such large parties that day, which is understandable. The food was ok, I would not order the fish tacos again and my fries were lukewarm. (No, I did not complain/send it back since it was close to 830 and I was tired). Adam was kind enough to comp our single appetizer. Knowing that we were here for my birthday and our server knowing, there wasn't even a candle on the dessert. I definitely did not want singing. Our server was great, she kept checking in with us and was very sweet. The overall experience was ok. However I will not be returning. I'm sure other people will have great experiences there, the tavern is very popular. read more

This Inn was so cozy and comfortable, we had an amazingly large room. The staff in the restaurant and the corner store were so friendly. There food was delicious! If they offer the cheeseburger pizza definitely try it! My only suggestion is that the bar stays open a little longer on the weekends. They were understaffed so we didn't get daily room service but we didn't care!! read more

From the food to the hospitality, Dana and Adam outdid themselves. They made us feel warm and welcome, the fire place was going before we entered the room making for a cozy environment. The nights sleep was great, the beds were very comfortable and blankets were soft. We woke up and had a delicious brunch. Overall had an unreal experience and would definitely come back! I would recommend to anyone staying in New Engalnd that they HAVE to stop, even if it is out of the way to stay and/or eat here! read more

I can't wait for this place to be up and running with a tavern and restaurant! As I write this it's a bed and breakfast. Under new ownership, Dana and Adam are whipping this over 200 year old Inn into shape. I stayed there for 3 nights, Dana makes amazing breakfasts, each day is a new meal, and each breakfast was perfect. The rooms are each unique, with lots of character. The suite is rumored to have been used by Harper Lee while she was writing 'To kill a Mockingbird' so that's pretty cool. The Inn is right beside one of the best fly fishing spots in New England so if you are into that sport this is the perfect place to stay. There is a glassblowing studio in what used to be an old church just a block away, Peter the owner will walk you through making your own glass art at a reasonable price. Skiing is less then 15 minutes away so this is a perfect place to stay in the winter. This was my first experience at a bed and breakfast and I'm very pleased it was there read more

Grand opening tonight! Open for take out . There were several tables put out in the back of the parking lot. It was great to be able sit and enjoy our meal. Looking forward to eating in the tavern! The food was delicious! I had the Caprese pizza. The crust was perfect! My husband and brother-in-law both got the Jack Daniels burger. They both gave two thumbs up for the burger and especially liked the blue cheese. read more

Under new ownership . So wonderful to see the the Old Riverton Inn open . The food is awesome . The specialty drinks are fun too. The room was warm and inviting with lots of natural light overlooking the Farmington River . Incredible breakfast for this hungry traveling . They are open for dine in or carry out . Both an Inn and a restaurant we find the restaurant to be both elegant and a great value. Call ahead as they are open Friday thru Sunday only. Ask the hours. I absolutely love this place...i believe it to be an unknown gem. The dining room is wonderfully comfortable, quaint, elegant, like stepping back in time. Open for dinner only on Friday and Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. The food is basic, nothing too fancy, the owner is the chef, his wife the hostess....i've had the duck, steak, sole, crab cakes, all great....good portions and served piping hot. This place is not a scene in any way shape or form...the dining room is seldom half filled and we have been one of only two or three tables being served...but the ambience is quiet, relaxed....very very pleasant. This place is not cutting any new ground with it's food...it's basic fare, circa 1966 I would say. Well prepared and plentiful. But we go back for the room and the ambience, it's just very special. read more
