Fabulous hidden gem. The Lost Fox Inn has a beautifully layered, rustic-meets-refined decor -- exposed wood, warm lighting, and thoughtful details that make it feel both elegant and inviting. What truly stood out was the service -- the servers were polished, personable, and made us feel completely taken care of. An all-around elevated, cozy experience.

I haven't been here since it was the Tollgate, where I was very well hydrated but it took forever to be served. Not a problem at the Lost Fox. The parking area is a bit of a free for all, and can be muddy when wet. But it's really a short walk to one of the two front doors. Dining is upstairs and downstairs, and both levels have at least two single restrooms with amazing wallpaper. I went for restaurant week, which is not their regular menu but the food was amazing. The cod with caviar was cooked to perfection, and the brussel sprouts were shredded to where I didn't automatically recognize them but the taste was amazing. The chocolate brownie dessert was chocolately to where it almost was fudge, and the marshmallows were good sizes with a bit of toast. Also, yes, there is a farm across the street. That is a goat bleeting the distance. I don't know what he wants.

ORIGIN: With the opening of Lost Fox Inn on Friday, July 26th, there is a new destination hotel AND restaurant in the Litchfield Hills that is both steeped in local history and nestled in a quintessential New England woodland setting. The main building got its start as the Captain William Bull Tavern in 1745, and had already been rescued once before with a relocation from Bull's original farm to its present site along Torrington Road. The community has been following the recent efforts of its current owners, and were invited to preview the product of this undertaking during a Saturday afternoon open house. It takes an uncommon combination of vision, knowledge, time, and financial resources to take on such a challenge, and I am likely not alone in being grateful to the friendly couple-- Eliza Clark and Tim Trojian -- and their fellow investors for preserving and highlighting Litchfield's past, while contributing to its future. LOCATION: The inn is nestled in a wooded landscape along the side of a road that connects the town of Litchfield with the city of Torrington. In this way it is an ideal location to both experience and explore Litchfield Hills/the "North West Corner", whether staying overnight or looking for a special dinner destination, as it is centrally located. LODGING EXPERIENCE: Beautifully decorated and unusually large rooms make for a restful overnight stay. DINING EXPERIENCE: Started with warm house made bread paired with saucers of slices of radish, and churned butter and ground rosemary mixed with salt flakes. Amazing how elevated this experience was thanks to the thoughtfully selected and prepared components and plating. The Potato Gnocchi with lemon ricotta, broccoli rabe, and pine nut pesto was one of those rare dishes that makes you reluctant to try anything else on the menu -- just how could it be matched?

Amazing atmosphere and the food was as good as you will find in Lichfield county! Great date night destination for special occasions and an experience off the beaten path!

Talk about a 10/10 experience! We really enjoyed our meal at Lost Fox Inn. For a new restaurant, the staff really has it together, from the incredible service to the talented chef. My husband and I had a wonderful date night here - the dining room is small, but dimly lit, so it still felt private. The vibe is perfect for Litchfield, and the owners did a fantastic job of keeping the colonial charm in the renovations they did to this 1740s home. So many creative dishes to choose from on the menu, with some of our favorites being the lamb kofta appetizer and sticky toffee pudding dessert special. I'll definitely be keeping Lost Fox Inn in mind for another date night or special occasion!

Came here for dinner for the first time and immediately thought "Why haven't I been here before?" The atmosphere and design was amazing and so cozy, I loved all the fireplaces and wallpaper and woodwork, great location for a date night or to take visitors from out of town. The food was amazing, I'm still dreaming about the foie gras appetizer and braised beef cheeks

A fantastic addition to the regional dining scene. This is by far my favorite spot in the area. Housed in a historic tavern, the ambiance is cozy, warm, and inviting. The owners did a phenomenal job of preserving the historic charm (think multiple wood burning fireplaces, original wood floors and cozy low ceilings) while adding modern touches (just right lighting, moody dark paint paired with beautiful wallpaper featuring pops of pattern and color). Make sure you come early enough to enjoy a handcrafted cocktail at the bar. Then, be prepared to be blown away by the food. The evolving menu features seasonal ingredients artfully composed to crate a well balanced menu offering. Recent favorites included the house smoked trout rillette and a complex and beautiful delicata squash appetizer. The service is top notch - thoughtful and considerate. Make an evening out of it. This place is truly special!

We recently stayed and dined at Lost Fox and can honestly say nothing but great things! The check in process was easy and the owner is so passionate about making sure the guest is accommodated. Dining at the tavern, the food was exceptional, the chef even came out to our table to ask us how our food was! If you just are dining at the tavern, it is a great date night spot!

We dined with a small party in a private room, warm and comfy, and boasting elegant, polished service from a sharp and friendly team of servers. Excellent. For Easter, we were given a prix fixe menu ($150 per) that provided some fine choices among appetizers, entrees and desserts. The appetizers included octopus, quail and some super tasty (and NOT overcooked) seared tuna. Delicious. The entrees included duck and chicken but all of us deferred to the tenderloin which was perfectly cooked to our preference, tender and ... well, just what we wanted. Add in the desserts and the drinks -- lots of specialty beverages. all on the pricey side -- and we were totally satisfied. Not a complaint in the group. Winvian is very private, You can't just stroll in. Reservations are necessary, and you'll need to get buzzed in. Once there, however, the well-trained staff provide first-class treatment, thoughtful and never obtrusive. It is a grand experience -- but it is expensive. Definitely for special occasions.

I love it and will probably order it again next time I go. My husband ordered the Bratwurst, as an appetizer, and the seafood saute, as a main dish. He had also ordered these the last time we were there. He likes them so much, why try anything else? The pre-dinner cocktails we had - Barr Hill tonic for me and Aperol Spritz for my husband - were very refreshing. Every time we go to this restaurant for dinner, we have sat outside overlooking Lake Waramaug. What a view! Our server was very competent. We never felt rushed and we truly enjoyed every minute of our meal. We went on Saturday evening and the restaurant was packed; however, the staff was able to manage it well and they were very welcoming. We are looking forward to our next meal here.

I shared we were there for restaurant week where that menu was also brought over. We were the only people seated in this section of the restaurant. I ordered the seafood special and my husband requested the schnitzel. Note, he said schnitzel! We started with appetizers, I had the crab cake my husband had the melon and prosciutto. Now the entree arrived and then dessert of crepes with ice cream and chocolate sauce. All on the restaurant week menu by the way. Meal was delicious until the bill arrived. I paid without looking ( my bad ) until I realized the total of 131 dollars . When I realized ( after paying ) that there was an error in cost ( three course meal for 40 dollars ) should have been 80 dollars plus three cocktails. My first response was wow, cocktails must be very expensive which they actually were very reasonable, I asked the waiter to come back. He said my husband said weinerschitzel not jaegersniitzel ! Seriously. We were very vocal about the restaurant week and quite obvious with the appetizer and dessert chosen from the menu . Although the food was very good we left with a very bad taste and a much larger bill than expected. So, lesson learned, check that bill before paying during restaurant week ! PS: the waiter was argumentative when approached and was oh ok , I'll take the appetizer off , walked away and started playing on the computer for 5 mins with no communication, we simply stood up and left. Ridiculous

And we were treated to an amazing jazz band on Friday night! No front desk everything is handled by text it call and that worked just fine for us. Very responsive and helpful. Booking/ pricing/ management: We stayed a night at the Race Brook Lodge to see a concert a little while ago. At first glance, a stay here looks a little pricey based on what you appear to be getting. In my head, $200 for a small room in a converted barn is steep. When I went to book it, I was asked to select a "package." There was one advertising a nights stay, a three course dinner in the Stagecoach Tavern, and breakfast the next day for $185. I thought since dinner and breakfast were included, that wasn't such a bad deal after all. Total cost after taxes and fees when I hit the purchase button: $201 Imagine my surprise when I got my confirmation email and took a look at the receipt- $309. I quickly looked at my credit card statement, sure enough- $309. I sent them an email immediately asking what was up with the extra $108. Crickets. Oh well, I figured I could just hash it out with them when we got there. I came to find out that there is no front desk, and everything is handled over text messages, so that made it a little more difficult. When the time came to check out, I got a text asking me to click a link to view my "balance." I clicked it and discovered that they were attempting to charge me another $92. At this point I sent them another email and told them that this felt like a scam, and that I would be disputing the charges with my credit card. They responded right away saying that there was a miscommunication, the "package" was actually separate from the room charge and that they were supposed to let me know of that right after I booked, but someone dropped the ball. They did eventually honor the original $201 price that I was quoted, but if I hadn't noticed the discrepancy or been firm about fixing it, I can't imagine they would have refunded it by themselves. Sidenote: when looking closely at the dinner/breakfast package pricing- it's an absolute ripoff. "Package" dinner: $150 Meals Tax: $10.50 Billed gratuity: $24.00 All in- $184.50. For ONE person. For dinner and a middle of the road buffet breakfast? The "three course dinner" allows you to pick any starter, entree, and dessert from the restaurant menu. If you picked the three most expensive items in each category, it would be $104. Plus a $15 breakfast, you're still not even in the neighborhood of $150. I suppose selecting the meal package bestows on you the honor of donating an extra $31 to the owners of the lodge. Great deal! The Room: We were happy enough with our room. It was nothing special, but it had air conditioning, hot water, and it was clean: really my only three boxes that need to be checked by a hotel. The photos on their website appear to be from 2017, which made me a little weary, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the room actually looked better in person. We stayed in the Hayloft #7 room. The concert in the barn: The concert we saw was EXCELLENT. The barn is an amazing venue for a small show like the one we saw. Everyone was giving each other a respectful amount of space, and there truly was not a bad view to be found anywhere. It was hot inside the night we were there, but when it gets to be a little much, you can just step outside, grab a glass of water and some fresh air, and come back in and still have an amazing view of the show. As far as concert venues go, it doesn't get much better than that. All in all, I can't recommend staying here. I'd go see another show in a heartbeat, but would look elsewhere for accommodations. Our time at the lodge was pleasant enough, but the funny business with their pricing left a really bad taste in my mouth. At my most charitable- I'd say it's bad bang for your buck. At worst, the pricing is intentionally ambiguous.
