To start, I am so confused as to how others made their reservations. I clicked on the link on their website which took me to another site to select a room and complete the transaction. I upgraded to a room with a seating area and a jet bathtub. There were pictures of the room and bathroom. When we arrived, we were told we were being upgraded to a room in the house. After showing us the room which had enough room for two chairs and a fireplace, the guy left. We discovered there was no jet tub. His explanation was that he didn't know what I was talking about as none of their rooms had a jet tub and told us to go look at the room we reserved in the carriage house. The floor/room was under renovation and was not acceptable, obviously not jet tub. When I tried to negotiate the price because I had paid extra and was disappointed that I didn't get what I had reserved, his response was that the room he gave us was priced higher than the room I had reserved and would not drop the price. Wonderfully quaint, quiet, and comfortable. We stayed in The Cottage, which couldn't be more private. The fireplace was ready to be lit, and extra wood was readily provided by our host, Lucas. No matter the season or whatever else is happening in the world, the Inn is a welcome respite from regular life. I've stayed numerous times over the years, and my experience in July this year was no different. With my company's offices closed until further notice, I spent a week working remotely from the Inn as a break from working from home. The wifi is generally strong in the main house and in the common areas. We stayed in two large suites: M1 and M2 (we switched halfway, both are excellent). Breakfast is outstanding, and the inn staff all seem to take proper covid-related precautions, which is a relief. The pool, especially during this hot summer, was fantastic! Keep in mind that you're still in rural Connecticut: restaurants close early (especially during covid-19) and the closest big stores (e.g. Target/Walmart) are at least a 20 minute drive. But as long as you plan ahead, that shouldn't be much of a problem. Overall, the Inn is a wonderful choice if you happen to find yourself in NW Connecticut. read more

We absolutely loved our weekend at the Inn a few weeks ago. Inside this landmark bed & breakfast, the space is really charming, the common areas are fabulous and the rolling lawns amidst the trees on the property are spectacular. There are loads of places to hangout on the property to just chill and the pool (which was just being prepped for the season) was a real plus...the only one like it in the area. It was a great get-away only 2.5 hours from NYC. A highlight was the bountiful breakfasts (all included). From the fresh selection of berries, to the choice of juices, terrific selection of eggs, and waffles with local maple syrup, we enjoyed starting our day in their elegant sunny dining room. read more

My family and I stayed in the Inn a week ago and we had such a wonderful and relaxing time. My two young boys loved the pool and the feeling of being in a home rather than a hotel. The room we stayed in the main house was beautifully decorated, spacious and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast every morning was delicious and fresh. The grounds were beautiful enough to enjoy our getaway on the property but we did go into town to eat dinner one night and we visited the Land of Nod Winery that is about 5 minutes away from the Inn. The inn itself is beautiful, in an idyllic location. The butter scones served during the day were sooo delish. The waffle for breakfast was good. Our room was large and furnished well. My biggest complaint was our mattress. It was hard as a rock. I'm not talking firm or extra firm - I'm talking basically like laying on the hardwood floor. I'm pretty sure my hip was bruised while laying on my side. I have no idea if other rooms are the same but I wouldn't go back bc I could not sleep a wink and I wouldn't chance it. read more

The property here is pastoral; pleasant views, appealing grounds, and a well-kept pool. There's a disused tennis court that would be perfect for R/C racing. There's also a large, working farm across the street. When I got out of the car, the manure stench hit me like the fist of an angry God and made me question every life choice I had made to eventually lead me here. Check-in at the main house was easy and the building itself is nice to look at, with pleasingly rustic architecture and furnishings. Plenty of windows, but only one open, and then only a few inches...in August. I guess they were trying to keep the manure smell out, but as a result the place was warm and stuffy. There are other, stately-looking public rooms, but they were dark and uninviting. I had the impression that they were for the use of wedding or catering guests. When I opened the door to the Carriage House, there was a strong smell of mold or mildew, which seemed to come from carpeted stairs leading to the second floor. Luckily our room was on the first floor. Left as you go in is a good-sized common room, not as opulent as the main house but comfortable and well-kept apart from some peeling wallpaper. Not a single open window here, so, warm and stuffy. Down the hall there was an old (and disused) automatic air freshener on the wall, which told me two things; first, that the unpleasant odors weren't a recent development, and second, controlling them wasn't a concern anymore. Our room had a working window air conditioner, but it was an old unit with a noisy compressor. Picture yourself napping on a lawn chair and having a UPS truck roar up right beside you, and you'll have an idea of the "shock-and-awe" factor. If you're used to window units, you'll probably be okay, but if you are coming out to the country for peace and quiet, your sleep might be disturbed. Speaking of peace and quiet, I read reviews on other sites where folks complained of the noise from Route 44 in front of the hotel. For what it's worth, I found the traffic sounds to be muted and unobtrusive. The room was nicely furnished. The old slat-style wood bed frames creaked with every movement and seemed on the verge of collapse. I'm a big guy and that probably didn't help, but the bottom line is that these aren't hotel-quality beds. Everything was reasonably clean except the curtains. They were so caked with dust that when I moved one aside to put something on the sill, I released a huge dust cloud, much of which settled on the pillow. There was an old TV-VCR combo but it didn't work. The bathroom was a mixture of modern and traditional, well-lit and with enough room for two people to get ready at once. There were coffee and tea setups in the common room, but no milk, creamer, or water. Presumably, guests are meant to bring the (provided) bottled water from their rooms, but I don't know what you're supposed to do if you don't drink your coffee black. I ran into one guest several times who was carrying around a quart of milk and wandering the grounds looking for a staff member. When we stopped by the Library at 5:00, we found "afternoon tea" exactly as it was when we checked in two hours earlier; one pitcher each of (ice-less) "iced tea" and "iced coffee", setups for hot tea and coffee (no milk or creamer), an electric kettle, and a tray of cookies. The cookies were good but not worth sitting in the stuffy library sipping room-temperature drinks. Breakfast was great the first morning; plain and Western-style scrambled eggs, pancakes with strawberries and blueberries, fruit juices, and high-quality sausage, bacon, toast and bagels. The second day we were clearly served leftovers...the pancakes were hard and stale. Lots of windows in the breakfast room, but only one or two open a bit. There were ceiling fans but we never saw them on. It's a shame because it was a really nice space and would have been perfect with a little fresh air. Now, I've recently read a comment by the owner, apparently in response to another unfortunate reviewer who had compared the breakfast fare to "Motel 6". If I may summarize, the comment was essentially, "How dare you compare the breakfast at my fine if fetid and malodorous Inn with Motel 6 freerange organically certified homemade raised real locally sourced organic organic organic organic!!!" So I feel compelled to emphasize that on our second day, we were served pancakes that were clearly left over from a previous meal. They were so hard, and so stale that WE COULD NOT SAW COMPLETELY THROUGH THEM WITH THE PROVIDED FLATWARE. To clarify, it was the worst breakfast I've ever been served. No matter how rustic the origins of your ingredients may be, you don't get to brag about your food if you serve it stale, and expect your guests to eat it with the smell of manure in their nostrils. There isn't much to do around Norfolk, except antiquing. There's plenty to do in Torrington, about 30 minutes away. read more

This inn was in such a beautiful location. The grounds were beautiful. The room we were in that was in the carriage house was fine . Plenty of room and very comfortable. At first, I could see us making this a little vacation destination, but it went a bit downhill when we started getting ready to head out for the evening. I had ZERO hot water. I hardly had warm water, so that was unpleasant. Then, as I was getting ready, the fuse kept blowing on my floor...every minute +. It was hit out so the AC kept turning off. That whole part changed my mind about coming back. On a positive note, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was absolutely delicious! I'd stay there again if we were looking for a place in the area, but wouldn't go with a group. read more

My husband and I stayed at this inn as a weekend trip with a concert at Infiniti Hall. It was so nice to relax in the afternoon in a beautiful setting, have a good dinner in town, see a great show, and not have to drive home. This inn isn't just for summer--we spent Christmas week at the inn and it was a perfect, quiet, and relaxing getaway from the city! Everyone who works at the inn is truly incredible and kind and breakfast was great each day, with accommodating options for vegans. We were even allowed to bring our cats along due to their pet-friendly section of rooms, which made the holiday perfect. I reserved this entire inn for our wedding guests, and was very happy with everything about it for the occasion. It is in a beautiful setting and is a lovely home - very clean and pretty. The rooms were nice and the common spaces were very inviting. TW, the manager, was absolutely fantastic! He was very helpful, invested, and accommodating to our needs (e.g., he let us have a gathering in the common room, provided music and a nice table cloth, had bouquets of roses for the weekend, etc.). He also worked with us to provide a truly beautiful brunch (delicious and elegantly served) for our guests and allowed us to set up games on the very well-tended grounds. This place purports to be a luxurious, high-end B&B. In reality, it's a cheap motel. I wouldn't mind the following issues if the place wasn't pretending to be anything but a cheap motel but when the place depicts itself as a luxury destination, and you find yourself in a place which lacks the even most basic amenities, it's unacceptable. First, if you are not given a room in the main house you are sent to stay in the "Carriage House". More like you've been sent to the servants' quarters. The building has an unpleasant odor and the room is tiny. We were there in late October, a very cold time in Connecticut. Our room had no heat! It was so cold at night that I couldn't sleep and only went to sleep after putting on a sweater, sweatpants, thick socks and taking a sleeping pill. There is no way to control the temperature in your room so you just have to freeze. You can't get warm by getting under the covers because, unbelievably, there is NO BLANKET on the bed. The bedding consists of sheets, a thin bedspread and a thin, loosely woven COTTON coverlet to sleep under in sub-freezing temperatures. The floors are hardwood with no rugs. There are two Costco bottles of water on the dresser, which looks like it was purchased for $5 at a garage sale. When I went to charge my phone and laptop the first night as I was preparing to go to bed, I discovered that the electrical outlet (no 3 prong outlet) in the bedroom didn't work! I tried the one in the bathroom - no luck. Before our trip I checked the website to make sure there was wi-fi. It states that there is free wi-fi. Upon checking in, we were given the password and told that sometimes it works and sometimes not (depending on the wind or who knows what, we were told). I had work which I needed to do during this trip. The wi-fi never worked in our room. If you don't have wi-fi, don't say you do! There is a small and ancient tv/vcr unit mounted in the ceiling corner with a handwritten note taped to it which indicates that it doesn't work. Oh, but you can borrow a CD or VHS tape. Really, VHS?? Even if you wanted to, the unit is so small and far away from the bed that you'd barely be able to see what was on the screen. The owner/manager likes to sit underneath your bedroom window, talking loudly on the phone while smoking cigarettes. The bathroom is gross, we were greeted with a long black hair on the white floor. There are two thin towels and a thin bathmat. The only mirror in the bathroom is in a small cheap wooden unit set so high up over the sink that I could not see into it at all. The sink has one pipe running into the wall - there is no counter space or table, so we had to put our toiletries ON THE FLOOR. The t.p. is the cheapest single-ply on the market. There is no box of tissues in the bathroom or anywhere else. The sink and tub were last upgraded in the 70's. You can scald yourself in the shower because the hot and cold faucets are so archaic that it's not clear how to adjust the water temperatures. There is calcium caked on the shower head, cracked paint and peeling wallpaper. The breakfast was awful, starting with the stale coffee. On the 2nd day we were served leftovers. The "fresh" fruit had obviously been cut days previously as the fruit had that translucent look and watery flavorless texture that it gets when it has been sitting cut up in a refrigerator for more than a day. The bread for two people was a few slices of supermarket sliced bread, a few mini bagels and 1 english muffin. What if you both wanted an english muffin? The double toaster was so old that one side didn't cook the bread enough and the other side burned the bread. The mini bagles were so small that you had to either burn your hand taking it out or risk electrocuting yourself using a fork to remove it from the toaster. Instead of serving fresh butter and jam there were brandless tiny plastic containers of butter and a facsimile of strawberry jam that came out of the packet in one solid piece after you peeled the top away. Breakfast was supposed to be served until 10am but the 2nd day when we went over at 9:45am everything had been put away. The owner/manager hovers over you constantly asking if there is anything else you need while at the same time giving you the feeling that he really isn't ready to provide anything you really want, like heat, electricity, wi-fi and a warm blanket. When I asked for another towel he acted like it was an outrageous request. As one reviewer pointed out, it's clear why you have to pay up front instead of when you check out, as you usually do in more upscale places. We would have definitely left after the first night if we hadn't had to pay when we checked in (& offered non-existant cupcakes at that time). The corner cutting in every possible way was painfully obvious. Everything is so outdated and/or cheap that one wonders how the owner thinks that people won't notice. Or does he have so little regard for his guests that he just says f- it. read more

We spent an evening and two afternoons at Blackberry River Inn. The innkeeper, TW, is maybe the most charming and generous host we've had on our tour of Inns in NW Connecticut. The food, pool, rooms were lovely. Breakfast fruit with honey, waffles and eggs were frankly perfect (and included). Even the tea and chocolate (dark of course) selection was well done. We travel with a cheery Coton puppy -- and unlike other inns that put you in a musty old room bc you have a pet (regardless of size or breed), we got a deluxe room with a private deck. We had an all around lovely wkend and will be back. PS - A few minutes away is killer calamari and cocktails at the Wood Creek Bar and Grill (make a reservation to sit on the patio). read more

We had stayed at the inn twice before approximately 21 years ago and thought it would be romantic and fun to stay there again. While the room was lovely and the breakfast was terrific, unfortunately our stay was ruined when we first arrived at the inn. We were immediately presented with a bill for our nights stay which was substantially higher then what we booked plus no consideration was given to the fact I had previously purchased a gift certificate for the room as a gift for my wife last Christmas. When I confirmed my reservation two months before I was told my room would cost $150, which is what I purchased the gift certificate for. The employees at the front desk appeared confused and called for their manager who rudely questioned the authenticity of the gift certificate (I received it from them) and lectured us on why I should pay substantially more for the room. After I threatened to leave and sue them the "manager" blamed the confusion on a previous employee, charged me room tax and gave us our room. I had to ask several times for the owners name and number which he reluctantly provided. Later when we settled in for the evening trying to forget our horrible check in experience I received a call from someone asking me for my side of the story. In fairness she did apologize and offered me a free night, but her call couldn't have waited at least until the next day? P. S. we never did receive a free night certificate. This experience ruined our planned romantic night and as nice as the Inn was, the manager who questioned the validity of their own gift certificate knew nothing about hospitality or customer service. Unfortunately we were extremely disappointed that this retreat we had such fond memories of had deteriorated to the point where an arrogant and rude "manager" could ruin our stay before we could even get into our room. Sadly, I doubt we would ever consider staying at the Blackberry Inn again. read more

My wife and I were going to a show at the Infinity Theater in downtown Norfolk and stayed at the Blackberry River Inn this weekend - Wow, very nice B&B! We were greeted by T.W. who could not have been nicer and more helpful with dinner and parking suggestions in downtown Norfolk - Get the calamari at the Wood Creek Bar and Grill which is right next to the Infinity Theater. We stayed in the main house - very cool historical building, beautiful grounds (did not realize there is also a very inviting outdoor pool, sadly, we did not bring our suits). We enjoyed a very comfortable room, (this is after meeting Lou, the house German Shepard who like to greet all the guests). The breakfast was terrific - fresh fruit with honey/lime drizzle, my wife got the lightest, fluffiest waffles I have ever tasted and I had a wonderful omelet. All in all, would definitely go back. We will not be returning to this inn. The staff is virtually non-existent, they do not answer their phones. They were never around when we needed them, i.e. check-in took an extra hour, we had no idea where to eat/shop/have fun. The grounds are great and so are the rooms, but the service does not match the surroundings. The staff that we did interact with were stiff, unfriendly, and awkward. We've been to many other B&Bs and Inns and this is not up to par. Will return to the area however and likely stay at one of the other multiple inns in the area. read more
