We were in town for three nights and went to have the gumbo every evening (it's amazing and the best I have ever had). I didn't even take pictures each time because we devoured it. Cajun and bbq choices in a rustic setting on Main Street. Casual and quaint. Great and friendly service helpful with choices as it was almost closing time on a busy Christmas Sunday. Unbelievable ample choice of beer, wine, ciders. Pinot from a can was different in a restaurant! Pear- apple cider in stemmed cocktail glass also surprise but tasty. We enjoyed sharing the last order of burnt ends in bbq sauce as an appetizer. Bowls of gumbo, etouffe, sandwiches were delicious. Did I mention casual? Everything served in throw away dishes! I actively avoid this place, even though I love the food and drinks. There is one bartender (woman with long curly dark hair) who Judy always makes me feel like an idiot when I'm there. She's friendly and kind with the men at the bar but has always acted annoyed and frustrated with having to talk to me or take my order. After about 5 of these experiences, I started suggesting my friends and I go elsewhere. It's a pity because I like everything else! read more

We weren't able to eat at the restaurant, so this review is only for the bar downstairs. Normally I wouldn't award five stars to a bar that doesn't serve draft, but this one has more than a hundred different beers on offer in cans and bottles, as well as just about every imaginable spirit that can be poured. Service is low-key and amazingly friendly, which made our visit fun and relaxing. The dungeon-like atmosphere has just the right amount of dank for the perfect small-town bar experience. This is a great stop for a refreshing beverage and some delicious barbecue while enjoying the park like settling or choosing to dine inside and enjoy the welcoming ambience. They have full bar service and are kid friendly plus the staff is so nice. The food is provided by Shay's Creole Smokehouse and the aroma is so enticing it will make you so hungry, I had the Pulled Pork Dinner with 2 sides, the pork had a fantastic smoked flavor and so tender with just the right amount of sauce, pit beans were awesome loaded with meat and smoked flavor, potato salad was good too. They serve good quality beer in plastic glasses, even indoors where the drunks are less likely to struggle. Landscaping needs an upgrade, wouldn't take much to refresh the bier garden. Very uncomfortable patio chairs with a metal rod spanning the area directly where you sit. The owner lacks attention to detail. Not enough servers but that's because Gen Xers are lazy. The food has been delicious and the outside patio a blast but tonight was absolutely terrible. The service from the bartender downstairs was absolutely rude and to more than one patron. He made remarks to anyone not opening a tab and stating that he would not be serving you if you came back after you checked out once. He stated to me that "adults open tabs and it's about time you acted like one" when I told him I was having one drink but unsure if I was staying. He made my decision extremely easy. Visited Millstream with friends for a drink. Left after one drink at 7P. Weeks later, credit card statement showed a $347 charge. Contacted manager. He produced a receipt that was recorded & signed by someone else - 3 hours after I left! Manager told us he was going to rely on the signed receipt. Basically, too bad, so sad, get lost. Went here very recently and was supremely saddened and disappointed. I had been to Millstream several times in the past and it had always been really, really enjoyable with fresh, hot, well made food! Went on a Sunday afternoon in November of 2022 - well post COVID shutdown. They are still using a highly limited menu, which is disappointing, but overall a non-issue. However, when we went, they didn't have potatoes for fries and they didn't have pickles. All drinks/foods needed to be ordered inside where there was a singular bartender. Getting a refill for my glass of water took about 20 minutes. This was consistent during our entire trip where ordering anything took 15-20+ minutes. All of the food was very, very, very disappointing. French dip was flavorless. The chicken tenders I had ordered for my 3 year old were under cooked. The burgers, however, were the most disappointing. Millstream used to have delicious, juicy, flavorful burgers! These were severely over cooked, under/zero seasoned, frozen patties served with Wavy Lays. We had a party of 10; 6 of which ordered a burger. All consistently over cooked and under seasoned. 4 members of our party, that we are aware of, experienced food poisoning for 3-4 days after eating here. Millstream used to be a St. Charles staple! So sad to see it go so downhill. We won't be back for food any time soon! read more

Stopped by for some drinks on the outside patio on Mainstreet. Despite serveral servers, we sat for 15 minutes with no attempt to serve our table of four. I went into use the restroom and see if I could order at the bar. Upon entering, two large dogs were chasing each other and jumping in front of the darkened bar area. I'm a dog lover, but this was just strange. They weren't under control and more like walking into a friend's house... except your friend would normally control their dogs. We left, disappointed as the setup here could be great with service and some basic hospitality training. Two stars for initial appeal of patio, 0 for the rest of the experience. Will try again sometime in case this just anomaly. read more

Always a great place to visit when on Main Street. It's tucked back away a bit so usually isn't too busy from foot traffic. The drinks are good, bartender is friendly, and the food is fantastic. Even in 90 degree St. Louis weather the outside patio is cool because it's in shade and they've got fans going. We eat here every time we visit the shops. read more

Sat inside at one of their corner booths. The seats have tin signs nailed to the backs of them for decoration. When I sat down, I felt something stab me in the arm. I looked back and the corner of the tin sign had pulled away from the back of the seat exposing a jagged, sharp corner. I tried to tell a server that there was a problem, but the server said, "I don't know anything about that. You'll need to talk to the bar tender." So I went to the bartender (Tony Gongwer who identified himself as the owner) and asked if he had a hammer? I told him what had happened and he said, no he didn't have a hammer. I said that he had a jagged piece of metal sticking out of the back of one of his seats and it had just stabbed me in the back of the arm. He said, "I don't know what to tell you. Smoking is allowed inside. It's 2018. Wth? I still can't believe this happens on Main Street in St. Charles, and elsewhere in this area. It's so gross. Anyhoo, it stinks upstairs and it's nearly impossible to breathe downstairs, with the thick clouds of smoke. It didn't seem like there was any ventilation. The outdoor patio was nice and the bartender downstairs was, too. We had a couple of beers last night out there. 90 degrees in October. Welcome to the Midwest. :) The patio is spacious, nice trees, leaves falling, a mounted fan blowing, speakers playing cool music. A blonde female bartender, who wasn't working last night, but was hanging out drinking, first upstairs, then down, jumped up onto the front of her boyfriend (?) in full view of customers, him standing up, her legs wrapped around the guy, kissing. Huh. How appropriate. Going back in to grab another beer, I wished for a mask. I felt so awful for the two dogs hanging out down there; it must've been even harder for them to breathe. :( read more

This is one of my favorite dives. It has this feel to it that the world outside doesn't matter and you're in a time of your own. It's kind of hidden from the street, but once you find it, you won't leave... at least for a little while. The beer selection is phenom, except I wish they had everything on tap. All beers are bottled. The decor/lighting is fun and inviting and the crowd is always entertaining. Prices are very reasonable for the quality beer and they also have a stocked bar if brewskies don't tickle your fancy. It's truly a place for everyone except.... If you don't like smokey bars. That's the one thing I really dislike about Millstream. But I go because I like everything else :) read more

I don't want people's dogs giving me the stink eye for my food. Also, when it's cold outside, how about closing the door? Oh, the door is open to help with the cigarette smoke. Understood. Also, even if you allow smoking, the staff should not be smoking behind the bar. I saw last night, the bar tender drop ashes into a drink she was making. That's disgusting.. she should not be smoking EVER while on duty. EVER! You bar owners think only smokers come to your establishment....I promise you, more people will come and spend more money if you go non-smoking. You run a bunch of folks out with this policy. So my reviews are late thanks to Hurricane Irma but the memory of Old Millstream is not! So excited to go back home and nosh at all of my favorite places. Munching and drinking in the middle of what I call the secret garden has never been disappointing and 4 years later still a great choice. No matter what your beer or wine taste is they have it. My got to has always been their amazing chicken salad sandwich and 4 years later still the same taste and quality. Love to sit and hang out in the district people watching and puppy petting. Love that they have "secluded tables" surround by beautiful trees with the sound of the stream in the distance if . Although this was a daytime visit I still remember the magical patio at night all lit up with live music and good times. Whether it is a casual daytime lunch or a romantic night time date they do not disappoint read more

We have been here many times but I was truly disappointed tonight. I understand the limited menu during COVID-19 but they should have those items. Mill stream is known for their soup which isn't on the limited menu. I ordered chicken salad a s they were out. I ordered the burger and I was very disappointed it's a large circumference but very thin. There was no flavor and the chips were soggy or undercooked. We ordered inside and waited in the patio for the food to come. I asked for mustard and ketchup but I was ignored. I had no silverware to cut my burger in half. My husband had the French Dip that was just OK. I'll give them another chance next spring and hope the menu and service improve. read more

Basement bar open till 1:30 AM along with beer garden outside!!! (May need separate listing compared to restaurant) This is my St Chuck friend's low-key hideaway spot. The bar has the old tavern dive feel. The beer garden has both ability to have many friends join or hideaway spots for privacy after sundown. Also a creek is there! The bar offers a good selection of canned & bottle beer. Some beers are the bigger size & you may or may not want a friend to split. I never ordered a mixed drink, but friends seem to like them. As restaurants go, this one is just OK. The food is fine, and the waitstaff is extremely friendly. The patio is very nice, and the beer selection is excellent. It is overpriced for bar food, though, and the restrooms are not even close to clean. I've had various hot sandwich selections here, and always with Mill Fries - which are fancy tater tots and pretty salty (which is how I like it, but wasn't to my husband's taste). I'd take an out-of-towner here, for the atmosphere, but only if it was nice enough to sit on the patio. I would give this only two stars if it wasn't for the bar. In the basement is the best kept secret in St. Charles - the Old Mill Stream Bar. The ambiance is fantastic - original stone walls, wood tables, darts, a crowded bar with friendly bartenders and plenty of regulars. We love going here - but not so much the restaurant upstairs. read more

It was okay...but not great. If it wasn't for the GIGANTIC selection of bottled beers, I would've been pretty disappointed. We went here because it was Friday, beautiful outside, and we were DONE with the work week. I searched Yelp for a good recommendation for a place with patio seating, and this is one of the places that came up. To be fair, the patio was beautiful. In fact, the whole location is great. Here's what I had a problem with: the service sucked a bit. The server let us know that he just started working there after being gone for awhile (which is something no one needs to know). But that is no excuse not to know your menu or your beer basics. If a restaurant's hook is their large list of bottled beers, then you should be able to tell me what a dopplebock or a black lager is. I don't expect you to know what every beer tastes like, but have a good grasp on the mechanics. Also, I understand that the place has a whole "laid back" approach to service (it's written in their menu), but how long does it take to get two BOTTLES of beer? The food wasn't great. I had their famous reuben, which was okay (although the bread was soggy), but here's what sucked: the Chicken Cordon Bleu. Whoever wrote the menu needs a Pulitzer because the description sounded fantastic, but the execution was terrible. What came out was a grilled piece of chicken on a naked bun, topped with a circular disc of gouda that was more dried and charred instead of melted.The whole thing was tiny and pathetic. Also, they write up their fries to be great and unique to its restaurant, but it really was just normal, slightly over-seasoned fries. It was just disappointing. I had pretty high hopes. If this review were based on service alone, I'd give it 5 stars. Our server was adorable and did a great job. We sat at the outside patio. It was cute, but looked like it could use a little TLC. We walked through the restaurant to get to the patio and it was old, and pub-like. It had some old charm to it. I'd never want to eat in there though because it had a very strong smoke odor. We didn't realize that patrons can smoke indoors in this town. The food was decent. Nothing to write home about, but not bad either. The "Millfries" sounded delicious, but they were just ok. Won't be back. During this time where businesses are struggling I try to be more patient when going out to eat. Not sure what all the hype about this place is. Was not impressed at all! On this day the kitchen was closed, but thought we would check out the bar anyway since there were positive reviews that mentioned it was cool. Not sure what's cool about having to wait several minutes for a drink cuz the bartender was too busy doing impressions. We were thinking that it might actually be a plus the kitchen was closed cuz who knows what the food and service would have been like. We left after finishing our drinks and went to Braddens down the street. Management from Old Millstream may want to take some lessons from Braddens.
