We were seated quickly . Our waitress was right on top of everything and our dinners and drinks were delicious. Next visit we will skip the appetizer to save room for dessert. Highly recommend!

For our family roadtrip, we were staying at the Fairfield Inn & Suites next door so Old Mexico was an easy dinner pick, not only because of its proximity but we love authentic Mexican food. They do have their own free parking lot if you're driving over. This place itself looks decently clean with a nice vibe inside thanks to the decor. The employees don't speak the most fluent English but enough to get by with your dining experience. Once we sat down, we were offered menus and drinks (we just got water all around) as well as chips and salsa! I have personally never been to a spot where they offer you complimentary chips and salsa the way an American restaurant gives you bread and butter, so this was a really happy surprise for us. I loved that the tortilla chips were very light and crispy, without any added grease and not too strong on the corn notes. We ordered three different things to share since we were told the portions were large (and I would agree), inclusive of their dinner combos #1 (with rice) and #9, as well as their quesadillas appetizer. The quesadillas were definitely the star of the night, with their very well seasoned chicken which also had a nice char to them! They were also stuffed with ingredients. It came with a side of pico de gallo but we were sad to hear that they had run out of sour cream! That was definitely a first. The enchiladas were unfortunately not the best I've had - they could have had more stuffing and the flavor wasn't as to my liking as ones I've had previously. I definitely recommend their chicken over their beef items if you're ever debating between the two. Their tacos were nice and big, with a very crispy shell and not too strong or a corn flavor. This place takes both cash and card, but they do not have portable credit card machines so they do need to take your card over to swipe, then give you a receipt for tips and a signature - it's been a while since I've had to do that but it isn't too much trouble. On your way out, they also have mints for your enjoyment. We were greeted on our way out.

It was late evening after long drive in stormy high thunder heavy raining to my hotel stay saw this restaurant across the street . After checking in my room opened up Yelp to see Mexican place reviews by others and decided to go to it. Place was really busy at 8 pm with few booths open which were not cleaned from earlier customer and I ended up near bar area booth . Took photos while walking over to my booth. Music was light Mexican: Dominican per the bartender which I liked the beats. Service order was taken fast and I knew what I wanted being vegetarian from very limited menu item. My Chili Pablano came with two peppers rice and beans. Quantity of food was similar to other Mexican places I have eaten so no surprise here. Complimentary chips and salsa was supportive to my Very inexpensive house lime Margarita for $5.50. !!

Old Mexico is fine in a pinch, but certainly isn't the best Mexican food out there (in Ithaca or anywhere else). The salsa that comes with the complementary tortilla chips is often a bit watery... and the flour tortillas used for the street tacos can sometimes fall apart quickly. Also, the margaritas are just okay. I ordered a "Real Coconut Margarita" on my last visit though that was probably one of the most bland cocktails that I've ever had. :-/ Service is generally friendly, and I've never had to wait for a table... but any visit I make here is more about convenience than anything.

I was shocked by how large the portions were here. The menu was what you could expect at a Mexican restaurant. The service was quick and friendly. This is definitely a good spot to get dinner.

Food was great! One of the best authentic restaurants we've been to. We arrived at 6:30p on a Friday night and only had a 25 minute wait.

Burrito Diablo to go. Very and filling

I stopped here after a long work day. I ordered a pint while I waited and a burrito Diablo to go. The beer was very cold and fresh. The bartender was very friendly and did not rush me, I had chips and salsa while I waited. They were also good. This was slow night (only a handful of tables seated) but it was a Monday night There are plenty of booths and I definitely would bring a family here. Overall a good dinner for the price.

We ordered the ceviche as an appetizer which was nice and limey- perhaps too many onions and rather large pieces. We also tried the popstar cocktail which was good- quite strong. For mains we ordered the taco plate with shrimp, chicken tinga, and lengua, plantains and potatoes. I liked the chicken and shrimp tacos the best. The carnitas platter was also very good! I thought that parts of the pork were a tad on the dry side but this is quickly remedied by pairing it with the beans and guac. Now, the star of the show and the reason this review has 4 stars and not 3 is the chipotle chocolate cake. I was expecting the chipotle/pepper flavor to be completely overpowered by the chocolate cake. However, the peppery taste came through! It wasn't spicy per se but it had a very mild kick but was just noticeable enough. The texture of the cake was also great- not your typical flourless chocolate cake, more custardy and creamy almost. Overall, would recommend! Food was solid- I thought the tacos and ceviche were better than the carnitas platter. The cake was the star of the show!

I've had brunch, lunch, and dinner at MIX, and all with varying levels of enjoyment. My recent…read morebrunch experience included ordering a Where the West Begins omelette, which includes "Braised short rib, butternut squash, red onion jam, spinach, smoked gouda". I wasn't sure how to feel about butternut squash with everything else (I'm not necessarily a huge squash fan - but I'm trying to learn to enjoy it), but the omelette was decent... it's the other side on my plate that looked less than appetizing. The biscuit was still covered in flour (and who wants to bite down on a clump of flour?), the cheddar hashbrown casserole lacked in flavor, and the brown sugar cinnamon oatmeal just... wasn't doin' it for me. Other recent experiences have been similar... there's usually one item on the plate that's flavorful or imventive (sometimes a main dish, sometimes a side), and the other parts of the plate are lacking. In reality, I think MIX is suffering a bit from rising food costs and inconsistency in their service and offerings. They've also changed the style of their menu from the original tapas-style to now being more typical entree options. Again... they've lost some of their innovative, experimental approach. In terms of ambiance, it really depends. I've been here for a work event and, because of the number of people, it was SO LOUD... they had also done a buffet offering for the event. As you can imagine, the food from the buffet was lacking, but that's often what happens when you're more mass producing your food (and it's left in a chafing dish, trying to be kept warm). On the other hand, I've been here for a dinner on a random night and was able to enjoy one of their Thai noodle bowls (and split some other apps with friends). The reality is that experiences at MIX are... well... a mix. Whether service, menu offerings, etc., I've found MIX's recent inconsistencies to be a disappointment. Will probably only visit in the future if it's suggested by others.

Here, the food is never prepared in an overly curated-for-Instagram-but-empty-inside kind of way, but rather with a focus on simple ingredients prepared with care in a slow-food way that emphasizes their deep, rich flavor. My favorite is the Al pastor taco with pineapple, a combo of guacamole and chipotle salsas, with fried cheese added on top of the diced onions and cilantro. To die for!! And still only $5 each. This afternoon, after eating literally hundreds of their tacos over the last few years, I tried their smash burger. Absolutely outstanding! Might be the best burger in town as well, it's honestly that good. And only $10! A few weeks ago I had a burger from a local restaurant for $20, which seems to be the going rate, and it paled in comparison to their oh!-so-tasty-you-can't-stop-licking-your-fingers burger! And if you ask, they'll customize it for you with a fried egg, or in my case, with lots of extra fried onions. Their torta sandwiches have also garnered a cult following due to their packed ingredients and massive size, still just for $14. If you're lucky, in the warmer months Eduardo might be serving some of his delicious aqua frescas, or even better, some of his incredible lemonade beverages. Sooooo refreshing! The bonus: you get to hang out with these cool and friendly guys Eduardo & Carlos, as well as their friendly staff who work so hard to make your food so delicious. This place is truly an Ithaca treasure!
