The service was excellent--friendly, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. The complimentary chips were fresh, warm, light, and perfectly salted. The real standout, though, was the green salsa. It was absolutely amazing with just the right amount of flavor and spice. I could have eaten it all by itself! Fun stop for lunch in Oceano. The menu had several options ranging from lunch combos to other combinations that were on the regular menu. In addition to all of the food options available, they had an extensive bar menu and lots of desserts to choose from. There were three of us, and we sat in the bar area in a booth. We ordered shrimp tacos, pozole, margaritas, ans a flight of different tequilas. The tacos had a tasty sauce, the shrimp were cooked perfectly and the tortillas were fresh. The pozole had a rich and delicious flavor and all the extras (cabbage, spices, onions and lime) were on the side. The drinks were good and service was great! Service was terrible. I ordered online for pick up. I arrived on time and the hostess said they were just wrapping up my order. I sat back down and ended up waiting for 20 minutes with no one telling me my food was ready. I finally went back to the counter while 2-3 servers walked past. The same hostess looked at me and said I'll be right with you. Finally a waiter asked if I needed help. I said yes I have been waiting for my online order for about 20 minutes. He turned around and said your order is right here on the table. I then turned to the hostess and asked why she didn't tell me my food was there since she was the one who told me they were finishing putting the order together. She said, oh I didn't see that the food was there. But she saw me sitting there for 20 minutes and didn't bother to ask or double check why I was still sitting there. To top it all off they forgot to put our drinks and I got home and realized we didn't have them. I know it was towards the end of the night but I got back home with semi warm food for the family because it had been sitting in a table. Old Juan's Cantina in Oceano...never been, so first time review and it was for the Sunday Brunch Buffet. To start...there was plenty of parking available, so no worries there. Entering the Cantina...we thought the ambience was really nice. Reminded us of another "themed" Mexican Restaurant in Las Vegas (Pancho's - Summerlin Cntr.) just not as "fancy". Nevertheless the atmosphere has "a likable/colorful flavor". The Buffet was already up and running when we arrived, so before we decided to actually partake we were able to "view the offerings ". It looked very reasonable and we decided "to pull the trigger" so to speak. Our Server was Shelby. She was really quite pleasant and stopped by the table several times during our meal. Before starting the buffet we received Chip and Salsa at the table (no charge...unlike some restaurants now a day's...that will ask you if you would like some and then list it as a charge on the ticket...so sneaky!) To start we ordered a Bloody Mary (4/5) to "share". Buffet wise...all the dishes we tried were reasonably good. Although nothing really "stood out" as being OUTSTANDING, we were happy to have tried a taste of every dish and we were definitely satisfied with the taste and seeming quality. I will admit that I was disappointed though, in the fact, that there were only pork and chicken dishes...rather than beef. Perhaps that is a cultural phenomenon...that Mexican restaurant cuisine preparations traditionally use more chicken and pork with some exceptions (fajitas, carne asada, etc.). Regardless my dear Yelp Review Readers, on this occasion...in this Yelper's opinion, Old Juan's Cantina in Oceano provided a "total dining brunch experience "that was more than acceptable, for a reasonable price"...truly earning this "definite recommend for a "fun" Sunday Mexican Buffet" 4 Star review. read more

I have eaten here before and it was always decent. Called ahead for a group of eight and they accommodated us towards the back. The table was all set up with chips and two types of salsas all the way around. Really happy with that. Our server Nicole was awesome. Easy going and she did a great job handling all of our needs. My son in law had Posole and loved it. He is damn hard to please, so I felt good about that!!!! My wife had the shrimp tacos and enjoyed them. I had the enchilada and tamale combo dinner, and it was good. Beans a little cold but good. This place was a referral from someone that lives in the area. Also it was literally right next door to where we were staying for the long weekend. There's a decent size patio that was nice as we had our little fluff ball with us. We were the only one outside so it was a little concerning if the waiters would remember about us. Menu wise, there's pretty much everything that you would want at a Mexican restaurant. Started off with some margaritas which was nice. It was serve in a regular water cup versus a margarita glass. Still good and maybe you get more anyways. The chips and salsa that was brought out was really nice. I love that it was thin chips versus the thicker version. Both salsa had a kick to them. One was spicier than the other but really good. I didn't want anything too heavy so opted for the meatball soup and a side of fries. Odd combo but it did the trick. Soup had carrots and zucchini with the meatballs. Honestly it was just ok. Nothing to rave about. I've had it at other Mexicans restaurants that were way better. We also had the enchiladas with rice and refried beans. That was actually pretty tasty and better than the soup. But the fries, that was pretty good as well with the Cajun seasoning on top. Food and drinks were brought to our table timely and at the right temperature. Margaritas were very good and hit the spot after a long hike. Carnitas were very good but portion was on the small side which matched the price. Flour instead of corn tortillas were provided but staff brought me corn upon request. My wife and I had dinner here last night at 4.45pm. The hostess seemed reluctant to seat us at one of the open booths that we requested and offered no smile or warm greeting. My wife ordered enchiladas. To her shock while eating the enchiladas she uncovered a one inch piece of a clear plastic bag in her enchilada. After taking pictures of the piece of bag she discreetly called over the male server to report the issue. The server whisked the plate along with the plastic piece of bag to the kitchen. Since our meal was nearly complete he claimed the Manager had offered to pay for our dessert if we would like one. We were still in shock so we declined the offer. He scurried away and returned with our final bill offering a 10 dollar discount on the enchiladas. I guess they felt we had eaten enough of the enchiladas to still be responsible to pay a portion of the cost. There was never an apology and honestly the man didn't seem surprised that a plastic bag was found in our meal. Is the quality control at this Restuarant so poor that when plastic bags are found in their food items they feel you should still pay for the non plastic portion of the meal? I wonder what additional cleanliness and quality control issues exist. We are locals and have been coming to this restaurant for over 30 years. How many plastic bags have we unknowingly consumed? Honestly this is why many long time businesses eventually find themselves out of business. They think they can rely on the tourist that come and go and forget the locals who support their businesses when the tourists return home. Use this as opportunity to be better! Greet your customers with a smile and take care of your quality control. We should never have to worry about finding plastic bags in our food . Frankly the $10.00 discount was insulting. Old Juan's is a large typical California Mexican eatery. It has all of the usual dishes and the food is decent. Unfortunately since Covid it seems to have gone downhill. The Carnitas I had on my last visit were very full of fat and over grilled to the point of burnt pieces. This visit, my husband and I stopped by for lunch and had two burritos, a beer and a cocktail for $83. Adding guacamole to your burrito was $1.50. When I took half of my burrito home and asked for another container of guacamole I was charged an extra $2.50. I will say they make a great skinny margarita though. read more

From the outside, Old Juan's totally pulls you in--it looks super inviting, and being so close to the ocean makes it even harder to resist. Inside, the experience can vary a bit. The bartenders are awesome, you get great service, chips and salsa show up quickly (thank you busboys ), and you can order anything off the menu without missing a beat. Now let's talk margaritas--the star of the show. Order the Cadillac super-sized margarita. Trust me, it's the one. I've been on the hunt for "the" margarita since moving to the Central Coast, and this is it. The food doesn't disappoint either. The menu is full of fun twists on Mexican classics--hard to explain, you really just have to see it for yourself. Chips and salsa are always fresh, and they'll sometimes have a salsa bar where you can DIY your flavor adventure. Portions are generous too--we almost always leave stuffed, with leftovers to enjoy the next day (bonus win).
