Irish entertainment 3-4 nights a week

Our room was very comfortable. Upon arrival on our room we found some small pastries, fresh fruit and chocolate. The bedside nightstands had individually controlled lights. We had two very comfortable upholstered arm chairs, chairs much better than any I have seen in high-end Irish hotels. The shower was a problem. It was located in a narrow bathtub with a half door. The half door was movable (without a fixed bottom edge), allowing easier access to the tub/shower. Unfortunately the open bottom edge of the shower door allowed water to puddle on the floor. It was impossible to take a shower without getting the floor very wet. The dinner was very good. Our your group had a wide selection of starters, entrees and desserts. I had rack of lamb. The after dinner Irish music entertainment was exceptionally good: Two harps, a clarinet, a violin, a small accordion, a male dancer and a female dancer. One of the harpists sang. I really enjoyed their performance. That group of young people plays about 3-4 times a week at the hotel. The breakfast buffet was not as extensive as at some fancier hotels. The made to order pancakes turned out to be delicious crepes. Getting coffee was slow because each cup was probably individually brewed. Directly across from the front door of the hotel is a grassy treed area with tables and chairs. It is probably part of the hotel. That outdoor seating helps alleviate the limited seating in the lobby. I did not see any other landscaping around the hotel; the hotel is right in the middle of town with easy walking to shopping and various sites. The hotel is conveniently located near a very walkable downtown shopping street. The cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is directly across the street from the hotel. Its spire serves as a useful landmark when walking in town. The hotel doesn't have the fancy common areas that five star hotels typically have. The hotel has a resident cat. The cat has a bed and a toy located near the front door. The cat is friendly.

The Old Ground Hotel is in a great location and within walking distance to all the shops, restaurants and sites in Ennis. We had a relatively large room overlooking the parking lot and the church. It was a nice size with a separate seating area. It was a little stuffy but we had a small fan and also kept the windows open. The bed was comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. The staff was very accommodating with our early morning arrival and we didn't have to wait long to get into our room. We did email them weeks ahead and requested an early check in. Breakfast was also provided and we always ordered the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. It was all quite delicious. The hotel is always booked with numerous tour groups so getting a reservation might be difficult but I'd love to return and visit the area again.

The great breakfast menu (which is only part of the experience since there's also a lovely set of buffet tables.)

This is a perfectly fine hotel. It is quiet yet in the thick of town and just 2 blocks from the train (& bus) station. The rooms and services are quite nice. The beds are excellent with good linens. Good soaps and shampoos in the bathroom with unlimited super hot water. Some rooms have a US compatible outlet at the desk - what a luxury. Ask for one if you aren't carrying an adaptor. They also have an office area near front desk where there are US outlets & computers as well. Free wifi makes it a nice place to sit in the lobby or bar even if you're not an overnight guest. I'm not a fan of Irish food so I was pleasantly surprised at the wide array of good food available at breakfast in the breakfast room. On buffet tables there were many fresh fruits, breads & pastries, juices, smoothies, cold cereals etc. There was a long list of breakfast options on the menu & the full Irish breakfast was the last option - as it should be. Posting a picture of the breakfast menu if I can. The hotel bar (Poet's Corner Bar) looks opulent with high ceilings, old wood and large portraits & is a perfectly good place to hang. There's bar food in the evening and of course live music. You simply can't beat the courtesy of the Irish people. This hotel staff included. I am conservative with my 5 star ratings but I was tempted to give this hotel one. Also I walked by some rooms being cleaned that looked smaller than mine so your experience may differ. I had room 401. A corner room at quiet end so ask for one of those. Highly recommended.

Restaurant. Ordered Hake. Skin still had scales on it and there were 8-10 large bones in first half of the portion. Unacceptable!

We just got back from a week at Dromoland castle for my daughter's wedding. Our experience there…read moregreatly exceeded expectations. The wedding could not have gone better. The event space was beautiful. We were blown away by the food at dinner the evening before and at the wedding reception. Our friends are still talking about the risotto, beef Wellington and the fillet. It's rare to experience fine dining at an event, but that's exactly what was provided for us. Our family has traveled extensively. We can happily report that Dromoland is the best overall experience that we have ever had in a hotel. The castle and grounds are gorgeous and meticulously maintained. Most historic hotels have fusty guest rooms. Dromoland had modern, luxurious rooms with state of the art fittings. Everything in the rooms was great, but the beds and showers were world class. Our guests were raving about their accommodations. The common areas were fun to spend time in. The live music was a treat. The food at the castle is by far the best food we had in Ireland. It would hold its own against any fine dining establishment. The bride and groom had an amazing dinner in the Earl of Thomond restaurant. I had the best fish and chips of my life in the Gallery and was pleased to quaff my first pint of Guinness in Ireland at the cocktail bar. Breakfast was an event in itself. The food and service were amazing. We commandeered a large table and spent a couple of hours every morning with a rotating cast of family and friends. The excellent staff took it all in stride. The activities were great- my family was captivated by the falconry. Jane's hotel tour was a lot of fun. One friend played an enjoyable round of golf and our kids tried skeet shooting- all were very happy. Many of us had excursions organized by Dromoland. The drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. The thing that sets Dromoland apart from every other hotel that we have ever stayed at is the level of service. The staff are charming and amazingly helpful. They often anticipated our needs. The attention to detail was awesome. The rooms and common areas were meticulously clean. Turndown service was lovely. The housekeeping staff would even tidy up chargers and cords when they made their rounds. The wedding and our extended stay at Dromoland was a peak experience for our family and friends. We can't recommend the castle highly enough. We should have stayed a few more days just to relax.

The Inn at Dromoland was part of our tour around southern Ireland set up by CIE Tours. It was our…read morethird stop and our least favorite all around stay during our time in Ireland. From service to room quality, and location, The Inn fell short for us. For location, The Inn stands alone and is not surrounded or near any variety of retail or dining. We had to venture into nearby Ennis for any semblance of experience beyond the hotel grounds. A positive relating to location was it put us fairly close to the midway point between the Cliffs of Moher and Galway, so we spent our time at those two locations during our two night stay at The Inn. Outside of that, location is not very desirable, at least for our Ireland experience. Service was okay, but the reception staff were dismissive at times and a few were not very welcome. After a few experiences with them, we avoided the desk. Room quality was another concern. The rooms are updated, so the look of the furnishings and the room were decent, but the quality was rough. The beds were the hardest beds and least comfortable of our trip. Made for very long nights. Additionally, while we are not in Ireland to watch television, our set only got one channel, which made our evenings even longer and a bit boring. Front Desk staff came to the room, but could not assist. Maintenance is not on site beyond 5pm, so nothing was able to be done during our stay. The only bright side about The Inn was their food outlet, Shannigan's. We spent each night here, partially out of enjoyment and partially out of necessity. Overall, The Inn at Dromoland has a ways to go. We were less than impressed, it served its purpose, but did not add anything to our trip around Ireland.

We rented a room with two double beds, and while the space was on the small side, there was still plenty of room to store our luggage and move around. The decor of the general areas and bedrooms are a bit outdated, but the spaces are clean. My husband and I went to the hotel's Shannigan's Gastro Pub for dinner, and the place was very lively. Service was quick, and the food was excellent. While we only stayed one night, the price and location made it worth the stay.
