I've heard so many things about the Old Grist Mill; I think it's a local favorite. So when I found myself in town around dinner time, I decided to check it out. Maybe I'm missing something-likely the nostalgia that others have from years of visiting-but it didn't wow me. Like, at all. First of all, everything feels dingy and dirty. Kind of like your grandma's kitchen that's been around For.Ev.Er. and has a film of dirt and caked on dust upon every surface. That's what it felt like here. It was nice that you can order a custom sandwich by filling out a paper order form and handing it to the cashier. It felt kind of old fashioned and slower pace, which can be fun. I ordered a turkey sandwich and a cup of soup. The sandwich was ok-the turkey was fresh and carefully sliced. But the soup was lackluster. It was reminiscent of something Campbell's might make, or just a mass produced frozen concoction you get at Costco. Either way it was very mid. Would I return? Sure, if someone else really wants to go there. But if I have a say, I'll probably move on to something else. read more

I've been going to Old Grist Mill South for years. They have it down - good food at a good price. I love the homemade breads they offer. The service is friendly and fast. I usually get the #1 combo (sandwich, chips, cookie and chips) and have never been disappointed. The portions are generous to the point of not being able to finish it all. I love their brownies! They may not have the fanciest dining area, but it's still a nice place to gather with friends. Great place to go for lunch - I highly recommend it! read more

I don't think I've ate at old grist mill since my college days, which was a really long time ago. I stopped here for lunch with my family and we each got sandwiches, drinks and a treat. The cost for the food was so affordable and the portions were generous. The bread is so fresh and delicious. The homemade treats are just as good. This place was packed for lunch and I can definitely see why. I bought a loaf of bread to bring home home and loved it . They have 2 employees that look like identical twins where amazing to me the always help me out. They both understand me and I love them. The restaurant was cool and cozy. Their food was delicious and I liked the chicken noodle soup. read more

Food is amazing and reasonably priced. We love to stop for a great sandwich. However, the restaurant is filthy! Walls, tables, benches, etc., could all use a good cleaning. There is garbage everywhere and the floors are gross. Don't even think about using the restroom. Current staff are good, but that has not always been the case as some have been dirty and rude. read more

Absolutely filthy. Everywhere you looked there was dirt, trash, old food. Tables weren't wiped down. The bathroom toilet was moldy, and apparently hadn't been scrubbed in a long time. As far as the food, though the sandwiches were full, the bread didn't have enough substance to handle, so it fell apart. The Cream of potato soup was horrendous. Lacking in flavor. Obviously out of a can. The chocolate chip cooking only had a couple of chips. We won't ever return. Shame on the owner. read more

The people who work here are great. They are so fun and friendly. The sandwiches are good, and the paninis are always good. The pumpkin squares and snickerdoodles are some of my favorite things. They also have ice cream, shakes, soups, French dip, bbq, and lasagna. They sell baskets you can make into gift baskets and other things to go In them like jams, syrups, honey, brownies and scone mixes to name a few. It's all baked fresh everyday. The best breads are the sweet breads such as pumpkin chocolate chip and cinnamon drop bread. They also have amazing Asiago bagels and they'll even toast and put cream cheese on them, or you could just make your sandwich on them if you'd like. Great price and decent food. Deli sandwiches are pretty good. The prices are the cheapest in town. You can actually get sprouts on your sandwich. That's hard to find anymore. The also have great shakes and cookies. Holla for Pepsi products. In the summer time they do tend to have a lot of flies. read more

The most confusing ordering system I've ever seen as well as the order you get your food. 4 of us ordered food together and I got mine, 4 other people that came in after us got their food before the other 3 of us received theirs. The sandwiches are good, soup is most likely from a can. I wanted to like this place but I won't be back. I would give it 1 star, but the sandwich was pretty good. I blame a lot of this on the seemingly very under trained young staff. One employee stated to another employee that she was feeling sick, then continued to prepare sandwiches for customers while sneezing. Very disgusting. read more

Their breakfast sandwiches are delicious and CHEAP and the brown bag lunch special (a sandwich, chips, drink, and big cookie) is affordable and always hits the spot. I live in California but whenever I am back in Logan and get the chance, I eat at the Old Grist Mill. My favorite thing is their cream of potato soup. You can get a cup of soup and a slice of bread for just over $2. Their bread is amazing. They have a delicious array of desserts and the oatmeal raisin cookies are especially delicious. read more

I love Old Grist Mill! I always get the 1/2 sandwich combo with soup. A cheap, quick, and relatively healthy place to get lunch.

I've been there many times. The sandwiches are great and you can choose your favorite bread and favorite normal toppings, not some concoction of something that is 'yuppiefied' or fresh off of the food network. Soups are always good. There are several versions of the combos to meet each ones appetite. The full combo with bowl of soup, full sandwich, chips, drink and a cookie is a good deal, as well as the smaller version. Have not tried their lasagne as I tend to like to get the same thing, but it looks and smells good and seems to be a good deal too. I used to go there alot because the food was good. The sandwiches are still pretty good and fixed how I like them with Miracle Whip, however last time I ordered a full sandwich they gave me a half and the soups are not so great anymore. I have noticed on several occasions the soups have been 'stretched' for lack of a better word or watered down. If they feel the need to do that they should at least add some flavor back into them. The Wisconsin Cheese Soup tastes like thickened flour water. There was not enough salt on the table to make it taste like anything let alone like it should have tasted. They should take them out of the bag and prepare them as directed and they would be great again. Don't know if I want to waste my money again on soup but the breads are great. read more

Circle what you want on your sandwich and hand to the person on the other side of the counter. Have you seen the Seinfeld episode about The Soup Nazi? That was exactly my experience going to the Old Grist Mill South for the first time. I didn't know exactly what I was supposed to do, I was by myself, and foolishly believed that they would want my business and would be helpful. How wrong I was. No one ahead of me in line was ordering a sandwich so I didn't know I had to fill out their sandwich order slip before reaching the cash register or face the wrath of an angry culinary genius. My lack of preparation angered the employee so much that they practically threw the order pad and pen at me and very demeaningly instructed me to fill it out and sent me to the back of the line to wait again. I guess I should have been grateful that they didn't add "No soup for you!" After waiting for my order, they called my name and I picked up my bag. They never mentioned that they had put my order into two bags and that I should wait for a second one. So I naturally thought that I was finally able to leave the restaurant. As I put my hand on the door to exit, however, they started screaming my name as if I was some kind of thief trying to get away. So I went back to pick up the second bag that they thrust across the counter at me because somehow my inability to read their minds had insulted them yet again. Needless to say, I will not be returning. I gave them two stars because their food was good, just not good enough to justify the service. read more

I had a coupon for a loaf of bread and a quart of soup, and needed dinner. I'd never been there, and "Grist Mill" sounded hearty and delicious. But, boy, was I wrong!! Haven't eaten any bread yet, but the "Cheesy Potato Soup" is REALLY disappointing! This is a thin, nearly tasteless soup out of a can. The sauce looks and tastes like cornstarch thickened just slightly with powdered skim milk. It has that after-taste. No salt or any other spices that I can taste. Some bacon may have been cooking nearby, but there's no other sign of it. The peas are obviously out of a can - NO question about it. The broccoli bits, big chunks of celery with tough and woody strings, green beans, and carrots, are really mushy, and may have been from cans, too. I'd be willing to bet that there is not an ounce of any kind of cheese in this soup! I didn't want to waste the soup I'd just paid for, so added some salt and a big handful of grated medium cheddar cheese. That didn't fix the problems. Nasty undercurrents of not nice taste persisted. I'm afraid to try the bread, now ... no wonder they have to send so many coupons in the mail. Maybe they stirred some left-over vegetable broth soup into some kind of leftover soup with potatoes in it. Not going back. read more
