I can't tell you how many times I've eaten at Old Clinton BBQ, or, if I've reviewed it in the past. Old Clinton has become, for me, one of thoses rare places that I knew what to expect from; and in this case, I always expected the best. What's more, I've always figured everyone knew this; so, ther's been no need to review. I stopped in for lunch, ordering the small rib plate. For just over a reasonable six bucks, I got three large, flavorfully smokey ribs, a cup of crispy, sweet, cole slaw, and two slices of white bread. The BBQ sauce, served on the side, is a thin, tangy, vinegar based sauce, that in spite of its consistancy, clings well to the ribs. You'll want to be sure to sop up what's left of it (if anything) with the bread. Is your mouth watering yet? It should be. So, why three stars? The cardinal sin of BBQ was commited. Sadly, the meat was dry. I can only believe this was an off day for Old Clinton; but, far be it from me to let a great place become a good one without speaking up. I will, of course, be back, to make sure the planets were simply out of alignment, during toda's visit. read more

This is my favorite BBQ. They offer other smoked meats that are quite good too. The entrance is charming with the tree trunk columns and swing with wagon wheels among other like themed items. The chickens run free and the roosters crow while you eat outside on the picnic tables. It's like nowhere else. read more

Have eaten here for over 40 years. I still avoid the bypass whenever I go within 35 miles of Gray just to get a real old fashioned, vinegar based barbecue sandwich for a reasonable price. None of that sweet, syrupy, candy sauce for me. This is one of the few places that has barbecue from my youth. And did I say the prices and amounts were stellar? read more

I always stop at this place in Gray on my way home from Macon Great hardwood smoked pork and excellent but thin Brunswick stew. There is a tasty vinegar based BbQ sauce which I love.. if you buy bulk take out get the meat without sauce and buy a bottle af sauce to put on it when you get home otherwise a pint of meat and sauce costs as much as a quart of meat without the sauce. . Place is an old wooden building on On the side of the road with clippings on the walls and wood tables. Servers always are pleasant and helpful. I feel this place has the best BBQ outside of Atlanta. Not what I expected. Traveled all the way down from Atlanta for some good BBQ. Microwaved meat, tastless beans, nasty coleslaw (tasted off), NO CORNBREAD!!! just a dinner roll out of a bag. Had the chicken it was very well smoked and falling apart but not mushy over cooked, white meat was dry but edible with sauce. Pulled pork and half a hen for $15. Free drink for military. On a business trip to middle Georgia, I decided to look for some good BBQ. Their sign boasts "Best in Georgia." They backed up this boast as far as I am concerned. This is the closest I've found to the North Carolina Q that I grew up on. The chopped pork was tender and smoky, and the sauce a tangy vinegar. The sides weren't very interesting, but who cares. I didn't come here to eat cornbread or coleslaw, I came to eat BBQ. This location has seen some years and definitely has character. It's likely been a destination for locals for generations. I grew up less than 3 miles from this little wonder, and I can honestly say that I am quite the BBQ snob because of it. Nothing comes close to a BBQ sandwich with extra sauce from this place. The BBQ sauce makes the sandwich. Now be warned....the sauce is definitely vinegar-based, but it is delicious! Brunswick stew is yummy, too. Been eating there since I was a toddler. Always good. The desserts used to be better, but it's not a dessert place. The Q is on point

The pork was a nice mix of different textures of well cooked meat- well cooked in that it was moist and flavorful, though the smoke wasn't too prevalent. It was perhaps overshadowed by the vinegar in the sauce. I could also detect a bit of a reheated taste. Still, it was every bit as good as any of this style of barbecue that I have had. Piled on a slice of fresh white bread, it made a barbecue sandwich that would be hard to beat. The ribs were properly smoked and perfectly done, though they didn't have much in the way of seasoning. Old Clinton's version of Brunswick Stew is a little on the thin side. It was good, but lacked anything that set it apart for me. Our sides of slaw and potato salad followed suit in that they were a good complement to the meal but didn't stand out on their own. I enjoyed the experience of eating here as much or more than the food itself. It's definitely a must visit for anyone interested in the history of Georgia barbecue. I can't agree that it's the best in Georgia though. In my limited forays into the Peach State I have already been fortunate enough to eat at a few places that give them some stiff competition for that title, but having said that, they are definitely close to the top of the list. read more

First ones in on a Sunday morning and ordered the pulled pork plate and rib plate. You have to know Mike Rowe smoked BBQ here back in 2008 with the owner, never a bad thing! I guess it is also famous for its vinegar BBQ sauce, very thin and tart, if you happen to like that kind of sauce, which we don't. So unless you specify, your pork will be soaked in that sauce. The pork was very good, and I would give the place 5 stars if they would offer another kind of sauce, not vinegar. The ribs were very good , and yes, they had no rub, but tender and smoked, if you like them that way, but again, if you like sauce, vinegar BBQ sauce is not great on ribs, and even Sweet Baby Ray bottled sauce would be better. It's probably heretical to suggest that, but, hey, this is not North Carolina. Sides were very good, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, but definitely portion control; however you will probably eat again in the same day, so you won't die of starvation. Brunswick stew may be ok? However the best Brunswick Stew in the world is in Coldwater, Michigan, where a former Hooters executive has opened JaxBBQ, which will eclipse anything in the south. They use gloves to serve your food, very clean and an obvious local favorite as 15 people hit the door as we sat down, with some praise and moans about only one sauce, but seems to suit the owner's business model. read more

Good Stuff! As the name implies Old Clinton Barbecue served up some classic 'Que in a nostalgic setting. I enjoyed old style pulled pork with their vinegar based sauce. Their only sauce as it is all their meat needs. No.2 son enjoyed a rib plate that he approved of with a saucy smile. No.1 son got some good looking real meat chicken tenders. All the meats were spot on while all the sides could use a little more work. Good enough but need to be kicked up a notch. Glad we stopped by for lunch today. read more

Old BBQ joint on Gray HWY. Good BBQ since 1958. Counter service with an old school feel. Seating inside our outside under the porch. Meals are simple and about the meat not the sides. The mopping sauce is light with vinegar and some heat. I buy a gallon every time I go, I like it on my chicken wings when I grill them. Hard to stay open that long unless there is something to it :) we stop sometimes on the way to Athens. Not sure I would drive there just there just for the Q. read more
