First time I saw it I thought it was a Vape shop but paying closer attention it was the bbq joint. Walking in it has a rustic country flair. Steeping up to the counter the young man was very helpful is describing everything. My wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich with cowboy baked beans and fries. I ordered the pulled pork quesadillas with mac n cheese with banana pudding for dessert. All the good was very good. The stand outs were the quesadillas and the cowboy baked beans. The banana pudding was not the typical style (see the recipe on the Nilla Wafers box) but light and fluffy and still delicious. You cannot see in from the outside because the windows are covered with graphics. Order and pay at the counter on the right and find a seat in the large dining area on the left. Overall, just not a fan of the food here. This is my first visit and I got the pulled pork platter and chose an extra side. The pork was anything but pulled, but rather chopped up and a finely shredded, and was more like a mushy ball. Although the flavor was decent, the texture was not appealing to me. The fries were good and I believe we're seasoned with their spice rub, which contains a little sugar in it. It was an interesting combination, but one that I liked. The beans were called cowboy beans, but were simply baked beans, and nothing at all noteworthy. The coleslaw was simply chopped up, cabbage tossed in a light mayo - very, very bland and tasteless. It's also pretty expensive as my lunch was $17. That included an extra side ($3.39 for a small side!!), but no beverage. The inside of the restaurant was homey. Honest review from a self-proclaimed North Carolina BBQ Pit-master. Before I begin the review, I will say this place was very good and I would eat here again. Instead of a flat 3 stars, I'd actually rate it 3.5 stars, as they have some good items on their menu. Their prices and portions are very reasonable. Having lived in Georgia for the past six years, good BBQ is hard to find here. This is definitely one of the best in the state that I've tried...the others being in Atlanta metro and Athens. Give Holy Smokes a try. The good: -Brisket. Their lean brisket was cooked perfectly and seasoned well, in a way that developed a good bark on the outside. It wasn't over-seasoned and wasn't too salty or dry, -Potato salad. Their potato salad is reminiscent of a cold German potato salad and was full of flavor. If you don't like sour cream, then bypass this and select another side. -Mac and Cheese. It was a warm and gooey cheese experience that is not similar to Kraft or Velveeta. Maybe adding a little bread crumbs or panko on top to give it a little depth and crunch could make it even better. The Mediocre: -Ribs. The ribs were mediocre. To elevate it to the "good" category, there would need to be more of a dry rub seasoning added to give it some more bark. As a BBQ place that offers ribs, pick your poison: Kansas City, Memphis, or St Louis style. Perfect the style and you'll leave a lasting impression. The pull to the ribs were great. They were not fall-off-the-bone and were not under or overcooked. I would just have liked to see some more seasoning on the outside. -Baked beans. They label them as cowboy beans. The flavor was good, with a hint of sweetness and smoke flavor. Small bits of pulled pork are contained in it...actual pulled pork and not chopped (we will get to that in a minute). -Sweet and Smokey BBQ Sauce. This tomato based sauce was good and had good flavor, but was nothing special for a homemade sauce that is no different than purchasing a bottle of commercially available sauce from a grocery store. Not one to distinctly remember because it was delicious, but not one to remember for it being bad either. The bad: -Pulled pork. As a North Carolinian, to advertise this as "pulled pork", it needs to be pulled and left alone. Don't chop it! This aggressive action has previous Pit Masters that have passed away, rolling over in their graves. Additionally, the pork was super dry. Chopping it reduces the amount of moisture content. Your pork when plated, should not be in a perfect ball shape. If it is, you chopped it and you're wrong. -Sweet Vinegar. If this is an attempt at Carolina style sauce, it's not at all. If it's the signature sauce to make your own, then it'll be in the mediocre category. The flavor was sweet with a slight vinegar flavor. It's as if the sweet and smokey sauce was mixed with apple cider vinegar to get this sauce. Eastern NC sauce is vinegar based and is distinct due to the heat from red pepper and tangyness of the vinegar. -Sweet and Spicy sauce. This sauce was very "black peppery" and not spicy. The service: Excellent service when ordering at the register and when requesting additional plastic tops for the sauces to go. Ambiance: The restaurant is the epitome of a BBQ spot. The decor is excellent and what you would want to see at a BBQ place. The price: Very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Other locations charge much more for the smaller portions you receive. This item is in the "good" category, if not "Superb" category. Keep up the great work with fighting inflation costs while taking care of your patrons pocket books! Not reviewed: -Brunswick Stew. So good, we got pulled pork dinner & 1/4 rack ribs. Tasty and meaty, 4 house sauces on the table are vinegar-forward. Definitely choose cornbread vs roll or white bread. On a road trip down to St. Simons, we were looking for a good BBQ place to stop at for lunch on our way and saw the great reviews for Holy Smokes BBQ and decided to hop off the interstate for a quick lunch. It's about a 10 minute drive off I-16, so it's a pretty convenient drive. It's located on the end of a shopping complex with Kroger, so there is ample parking. They also have a drive thru, which is really convenient for those that need to pick it up and keep moving (the line was pretty long, though, when we pulled up. At least 5 cars deep!). They have a small ordering area at the front and a decent sized eating area to the left when you walk in. It wasn't super crowded when we got there, so we easily found a spot to sit down. In regards to COVID-19 protocols....there are none. I know I'm a big city girl coming into small town Dublin, but the only worker in the restaurant wearing a mask was the girl up front taking orders, the 5 or so staff members in the kitchen were maskless except for one that decide to use hers as a chin strap. No patrons inside are required to wear one inside either, which I suppose is their choice as a business. Myself and maybe one other person took it upon ourselves to wear a mask in line. I ordered the pulled pork (really good!) with sweet and smoky sauce (also really good), Cole slaw (great side, it's good old fashioned southern style slaw. They called it "kickin slaw" so my brain automatically assumed it would be spicy, but it is literally just slaw lol), and Mac and cheese (do NOT order this side! I am so sorry, but their Mac and cheese is nothing short of buttered noodles). My husband got a 2 meat place with ribs and brisket (both excellent, honestly their meat is the shining star. Every meat we had was exceptional), baked beans (he loved it more than I did, however the beans are pretty good) and potato salad (an absolute winner). We tried the Brunswick stew, which is decent but I honestly think it was too loaded up with corn and peas. Each plate comes with 2 slices of white bread and 2 dill pickle slices. We also, based on reviews here, decided to try the banana pudding. It has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. The pudding itself is honestly excellent, however you end up with killer pudding, a few dry Nilla wafers tossed in and a slice or two of banana. For me, one of the things I love about banana pudding is when the Nilla wafer at the bottom gets soggy from the pudding, and they literally use it as a garnish basically when serving. If they made it more like a "casserole" per se and scooped it up and served it that way....I think they'd have a 10 star banana pudding on their hands. Tried this place because it has a drive thru window, and I'm glad I did! Server was extremely nice and helpful. Prices are very reasonable. The ribs were mostly very tender and had a good flavor, although not too smoky. They were meaty and covered in the sweet sauce. (This place has two sauces - sweet and vinegar.) The pulled pork also tasted good and not too smoky, and came with a grilled bun. The server asked what sauce I wanted with the pulled pork and I chose sweet, which tasted pretty good/average. Only 3 sides were available, and we both chose the Cole slaw and the loaded potato salad. The loaded potato salad was good and was made with sour cream - it did not seem to have any mayonnaise. The Cole slaw was sweet and crunchy, but it oddly did not seem to have any vegetables other than cabbage. If it had any onion I could not taste it, and there were no visible carrots. Overall, this was some very good food for a reasonable price. If you're having trouble finding it, it's in the Kroger shopping center on the far right side. read more
