The food was really good and really enjoyed it. I definitely would be back. The staff was great, nice and clean

Service was fast and the food was really good. I had the fried catfish and shrimp combo. The restaurant doesn't look the best. It's pretty empty inside, but worth it if you want quick seafood. read more

Catfish, Oysters were delicious. Maybe fry middle of catfish a little longer for firmness. Service was welcoming, friendly and not a very long wait. The portions were generous. Fillets, Not small nuggets as one known place has started serving to replace the fillets. Restaurant is nice and clean. Restroom was out of order. This needs immediate attention, especially having senior Citizen as customer s. A necessity that says we care that customers are comfortable. I will return many times. read more

The lady at the register is rude af! The fries are stale; however the shrimp is okay. They need to show better customer service.

Another first! I was in the mood for some fish and chips. I found this on Yelp! Dam I am glad I did. This place smelled so amazing! When you walk in it's like wow! Yummy. The service was a little slow to order, but then we had to wait. I'll tell you what. It was more then worth the wait. Man the portions were huge. And the flavor was delicious! So be ready to wait a few! But you will not regret it. The only down fall is that it's take out only when we went. Other wise I would have given the I do recommend this one to anyone who loves fish! read more

I paid $17 for 7 old, stinky, chewy fried scallops. They were truly, truly awful. I left half uneaten and it all went straight into the garbage after I braved biting into a few to see if it was just a bad scallop. Nope! They also weren't cooked through properly. I was already on to my next appointment when I realized and had no time to go back and deal with it. I don't know how the other seafood is at this place but the scallops were godawful. read more

Great seafood place. Really fresh large portions. We got shrimp...huge...oysters...huge. great fresh seafood. A lot of take out going on. We ate in the dining area. Happily surprised. If we're out there again its a great place to eat. Similar to Calabash type breaded seafood but honestly better. read more

You don't go to this place for the ambiance, or fancy chairs, or tablecloths and cloth napkins. You go to this place if you want fresh delicious seafood, made to order with generous portions and great prices. The family that runs the place do a great job, and wait to make your to go order( because you are going to want some of that steamed shrimp with Old Bay to go) until you are almost finished with your "gotta eat this right now" order. The clam strips are chunks of goodness, the flounder is perfection, and I am now a fan of fried scallops. The only thing I can't race about are the fries, and that's because I'm not a huge fry fan to begin with. The hushpuppies are pillowy goodness on the inside and crunchy crispness on the outside. Good stuff. Treat yourself to some unpretentious and delicious seafood at this little spot of happiness! read more

We played a little Yelp roulette while in Portsmouth and ended up at Old Bay Seafood for date night. It's hidden in the middle of a small strip mall and sort of a hidden gem. We ordered at the counter and found a seat to wait (and watch football, of course!) our food came out quickly and piping hot! We ordered the special: Flounder, Shrimp and Scallops combo, which also came with fries, coleslaw and hush puppies. Once it came out we realized what a ridiculous amount of food we ordered, the portion is HUGE! The scallops were fried yet seasoned and cooked perfectly, the flounder tender and the hush puppies (which look like tiny footballs) tasted amazing! Our orders also included cocktail sauce and a honey-mustard tarter sauce. Not my favorite for tarter sauce, but a good dipping sauce in general terms. A good stop if you are in this neck of the woods, and remember, the portions are definitely sharable. read more

Great little find during our stay in the Hampton- Chesapeake area. Very busy/popular on Friday evening - get your order in early or be ready to wait 45 min to an hour. Ordered 3 Fish & Shrimp and Fish & Scallops for six people - twice as much food as we could eat! read more

I came back to the area after a few months and decided to come back here. I was glad I did. I changed my rating to 5 stars because the smell inside greatly improved. They me my whiting platter to order and was piping hot when I got it. It was so good. The freshness of the coleslaw really helps cut all the fried food. I should have taken a picture after I bit into the whiting to show the bright white flesh. No fishy taste whatsoever. Fries were crispy and I doused them in malt vinegar. I normally don't eat hush puppies but I gave them a try. I'm still not a fan of hush puppies, but I can understand why some might like it. I was the only one dining in, but a lot of people did carry out. I don't like doing carry out because it love eating fried whiting right out the fryer. Anyways next time I am in the area I will definitely be back here. read more

Fried and grilled options for carry-out. Quick service. Wasn't thrilled with the breading.

I'm so excited to live so close to a clean seafood spot! ! ! It's so freshening to walk into a seafood place "old bay Seafood" AND NOT smell fish or anything bad for that matter. The restaurant itself appears to be clean and decent. The service was pleasant and inviting. I ordered the flounder/chicken combs being I ordered a flounder sandwich couldn't even comb let alone the sandwich lots of food for 10$ and not greasy or salty read more

Visited this place following a LONG day (12+ hours) at my kids track meet. Arrived at 7:45 p.m. The restaurant closes at 8:00 pm. Owner refused to allow us to dine in. I suggested we leave.. the hubby was too tired and hungry to restaurant hop so we opted to stay. We ordered tilapia, shrimp, coleslaw, & hushpuppies and ate outside in Lowe's parking lot, using our coolers as chairs. Despite the owners not being accommodating, the food was really good. We visited this place over a month ago and my picky daughter still talks about how great the food was and wants to go back. I would've given the place at least 4 stars but customer service is huge for me. If you're not willing to allow your customers to sit down and dine for 10 minutes, then you seriously need to rethink your restaurant model and just have pick up only. Needless to say, we won't be back, regardless of how good the food was. :-( read more

This is an awesome little dive. Very simple but AMAZING fried fish and shrimp. I had the flounder sandwich and it had 3 big pieces of perfectly fried flounder filets on it. Very tasty. The wife got the shrimp poboy and it was equally great.... it has a special sauce that was a little bit spicy. Very satisfied. We will be back to eat again read more

Owner was pleasant at walk-in. She was very friendly with my son and I. I ordered two dinner meals to go. The food is fantastic. Fish well seasoned, shrimp&oysters fried just right, hushpuppies sweet and salty. Only thing.. I just wish my scallops were fried hard like my oysters and shrimp. Lots of food for two people. It's a small restaurant with mostly to go orders. The shrimp weren't bad but the tartar sauce was more like honey mustard. The coleslaw was not good. Hush puppies greasy and bland. How does a restaurant survive that will not answer the phone. must have called 20 times and no answer!!

Food average with horrible customer service, cashier very rude. This experience was the worse do not waste your time coming here. They don't give more than one sauce (asked for another she said no), you can't use condiments on the table that's for dine in only and the crab cakes are extremely small. Only came being my mom really wanted some fish and the Suffolk location is closed on Monday. Never Again read more

Went in for dinner last night and there was a weird smell, my husband noticed it as well and said it was probably coming from the nail salon next door. I ordered the whiting dinner. The food was standard, fries were cold. There's a very clear view of the kitchen when ordering and the kitchen looked very clean, so that was a plus. But I also noticed the woman that took my order went to the back to cook my food, and she pulled an uncovered bowl from under the counter with the hush puppy mix in it. I DID NOT eat the hush puppies for this reason. read more

Old Bay Seafood is a little strip mall shop much like your typical Chinese food strip mall take out. It just opened and is at this writing (5/11/13) celebrating it's grand opening. There are a few restaurants in the area with the name Old Bay Seafood. I'm not sure if they're affiliated but comparing the menu to this one with the one in downtown Suffolk, it appears they're related in name only. The strip mall unit Old Bay is located in is set off Portsmouth Blvd. West (Rt. 337) exit off I-664. It is set back off Portsmouth Blvd. and would be easy to miss: There is a 7-11 and Burger King at each corner of Starmount - Starmount takes you back to the Lowes and One Life Fitness. Old Bay Seafood is located in a little strip mall building at the back that also contains a Subway and is sandwiched between a Nail Salon and Massage Parlor. It would be easy to miss (their Opening Soon and Now Open banners were the things that caught my eye). Like many typical Chinese take out places you find in strip malls, the concept is kind of the same here. Old Bay Seafood is one unit, with small tables and chairs, but maybe about as much seating as a typical Subway. There's a counter with the menu on the wall above (just text, not pictures like your Chinese places) on the left with kitchen area behind. The front area has tables on either side, and the right side goes back further to restrooms with some more tables on that side. It is not fancy. It is brand new and very clean. It's a place where you might sit down and have lunch, but there's no wait-service - not a place you'd go out to for dinner or anything unless you're on the road and aren't taking it back to a nearby hotel (or want to get out of the hotel for a bit), etc. The menu has: Whiting, Trout, Spot, Croaker, Deviled Crab, Oysters, Scallops, "Sea Legs", Shrimp and Soft Shell Crabs (!). I think they maybe had a Crabcake too. There are various specials and a la carte items. It was dinner time when we came - dinners consisted of Fries, Coleslaw, Hushpuppy, and whatever seafood item you picked. Some specials combine some items together. There were also lunch specials that looked similar - my guess is they're just smaller portions. Most of the items were fried, shrimp could be steamed, I think they also had Chicken strips. There's also a refrigerated drink cooler in front of the counter - Water, Arizona Tea (one type), Fanta Orange, kind of a mish-mash - probably whatever they buy at BJs and stock it with :-) Now, I am a little leery of eating seafood at places like this. In fact, I've never done it. I've been to Captain D's, or Long John Silver's, but at least they're chains so if you have a problem...and of course, you know seafood can by iffy. We got a dozen steamed shrimp (medium size, $9.99 lb). We also got the Soft Shell Crab Dinne - I know, crazy at a place like this on a first visit (also $9.99 - that was the most expensive dinner, others being 5.99 to 7.99). Ordered. Waited no more than 10 minutes. Styrofoam takeout boxes nicely packed, taped shut to avoid mishaps. Asked for Cocktail, they already included two little containers, but added one more. Got it home, opened up the box of softshells and gasped - there were TWO and they were BEAUTIFUL. They had shell on, and were not cleaned of the mustard (which is OK but I know some people don't like that). The shrimp were medium. I shared with my son and actually counted out half for each of us so I know there were 44 nicely spiced, NOT overcooked shrimp. The shrimp were good. Shrimp are shrimp and as long as they're not overcooked and rubbery, they're hard to mess up. These were every bit as good as any I've had or made at home. Seemed fresh, tasted fine (I liked the spice). The soft shells were every bit as good, and in fact even better the ones I've had at seafood restaurants. Batter had some kind of nice "Asian" type flavor to it - like a tempura, or some soy or sesame or something in it. Hushpuppy was OK. Basic. Fries were like Ore-Ida crinkles - undercooked though. We stuck them under the broiler and toasted them up a bit. Cole slaw was in the same little container cocktail sauce came in. Not very much. So the sides were nothing spectacular and just, at best, basic. The seafood though was way better than I expected (especially the soft shells - I can't believe 1. they had them and 2. they were so good). The woman who took our order was Asian as was the visible cook in the back. She called the order back in an Asian language. The menu items were numbered, like "D4" and such - more ties to your typical Chinese take-out strip mall unit. But if the food remains at this level after they get up and running (and the prices don't increase significantly), we will be going back! This is a great way for my family to get good seafood without having to go to a sit-down restaurant (which we have no good ones close) or cooking it myself (which I do, but can't always do). Side note: there is no "market" here. read more

Been by several times so we thought we would stop in. I'm sure glad we did. I nice sized place, clean and neat. The menu was extensive, the service fast and friendly, and the food, wow! I ordered the lunch special of fried fish and shrimp for $6.49. The food came fast and was very hot. First let me say the shrimp were the best fried shrimp I have ever eaten. They were big, lightly battered, perfectly cooked, and had a sweet flavor. There were 4 of them in the platter along with 2 large pieces of fish, french fries, 2 hush puppies, coleslaw, tartar sauce, and shrimp cocktail sauce. Included was a drink. All the food was delicious and the portions more than adequate. A revisit is definitely in order. Highly recommended. read more
