This place is well worth the drive out to Alton if you're not local. If coming from out in St. Charles I highly recommend taking the scenic route through north St Charles county as it's a very relaxing drive. Old Bakery Beer is a gem on the East side and definitely worth a trip to Alton! I had tried their beer at various places in St. Louis and really enjoyed it. I got the pleasure of attending a wedding there last month and they really went above and beyond to make their day the best it possibly could be! They pulled off a vegan wedding when they usually served burgers and the like in their restaurant we were really impressed by the quality of the food! I returned there this week for a Blacklight Yoga event which had a beer and Halloween candy pairing following the class for Halloween. My friends requested a vegan option and they served 3 out of 4 candy options as vegan making everyone happy. Terrible service, sad to leave this review. Had one beer, unpleasant bartender with green hair refused to serve us until we we drank water. Would have loved some water, but she wouldn't being us any. So good! Went there on a whim for a quick lunch and so glad we tried it! We had the summer nachos, a Rueben, and delicious house made pickles. All very fresh and very tasty! I love old bakery!!! Their beer is awesome and their food is great too! Also if you go here and aren't in the mood for beer, get the winter Paloma, its delicious. The first few times I came here it was just to hang out and have a couple beers. The only time I've had the food here I got the Caesar salad and it was very good. One of the better Caesar salads I've had for sure, it wasn't over dressed and had a good amount of cheese on it and it the croutons were delicious. I definitely want to go back and try some of their other food! I love how big the space is and the atmosphere is great. One time when I went there was a banjo band playing and they were great. The food's great here. My husband and I discovered yesterday that their "small" salads are nearly as big as a large elsewhere. There's a fair selection of gluten-free and vegan food here, too. I especially recommend the smoked wings and the tacos. The beers are a mixed bag. Their lime-flavored kölsch was so heavily flavored that it didn't fit the true German beer taste profile. The porter is OK, but too bitter for the classic brew. The Golden Oat is very nice, but undistinguished. Stick to Citrus Wheat if you want something familiar. Hooray for craft beer! When I heard that they were opening a craft brewery in Alton, Illinois, I was obviously skeptical. Alton is Fast Eddie's, total AB country. However, I convinced my family to celebrate my birthday across the Clark Bridge, and we were not disappointed with Old Bakery Beer. I had prior experience with OBB. Their Porter, Citrus Wheat, and Golden Oat have been circulated in The Lou fairly well. I had ran into a bachelor party down at my regular pub, you know the place, and they were stoked about this brewery. I had to know more about OBB. The brewery was once a Colonial Bread factory, and the brewery recognizes it in the lobby. After a fairly long hallway, we entered a large room where beer flowed and good food was served. Our party was eleven. They set up a long table for us near the bar. The service was a little slow at first. It took a while to get my beer, but once I got my first flight, I was definitely hooked! The Oktoberfest was a solid effort, fairly traditional. So was the English Pale Ale. The Grapefruit Session was probably my favorite, with its citrus and subtle hops, but the Timor Coffee Red Ale was a near second. I was so impressed with my first flight of four that I ordered a second! Eight samples and I was a happy man. The food service was much more crisply done. The menu is primarily sandwiches. The Cuban was a big hit, and everyone enjoyed the brisket. I had the Reuben, which was also a solid effort. We had a dog with us so we sat outside on the patio. We also had a newborn with us, so we moved a table a few feet closer to the building to provide shade. When our food was brought out, the waitress stared at us and said "you moved the table?". I explained we had a newborn so we needed the shade. She did not respond to the reasoning. As we were leaving, the table next to us had 3 dogs so we didn't want to encroach on their space and put the table right up next to them like it originally was before they got there. As we were getting our newborn into the car, she yelled across the parking lot to help her move the table back. As someone who has worked in the service industry before, I have moved several tables back when patrons have moved them. I have also recruited fellow employees to assist, rather than making the patrons feel bad about it. I went with a couple friends and we each got a flight of different beers so we could try all of them and 3 flights (4 each) did cover 90% of their menu. Some of their flavors are under developed and have no finish but the majority are pretty good quality. My favorites for the Hibiscus Tart, Saison and one that I can't remember the name of but it was aged in bourbon barrels with cherries. Parking at Old Bakery is kind of a pain since their is a curbed median so if there isn't anything open in the lot you have to go out of your way to turn around and get to their overflow lot. Old Bakery Beer is the newest brewery I've visited and already my favorite. When I went to visit I was expecting something smaller but was blown away by the size of the facility as well as how established it already feels. When you enter you have a pretty long walk to the restaurant/bar area. This hallway already feels like Old Bakery Beer has a historic presence in Alton, IL! The bar area is amazing. It's beautifully designed and has a rustic/industrial feel. There are plenty of tabled areas as well. I tried their "citrus honey wheat" beer and of course, a hot pretzel and cheese. The beer was delicious. Easily one of my new "local" favorites. I haven't been blown away by any local breweries wheat beers as it's not in fashion right now but this was truly amazing. The pretzel was made to order and was everything I hoped for and more. Golden brown, fresh, buttery, and hot. It came with some cheese dip that was perfect for this hot treat. New local brewery is a great addition to Alton! My brother, my brother's wife and I stopped by here twice during our trip to the St. Louis/Alton,IL area! The first trip was just for the beer, and the second trip we went for lunch and beers. Old Bakery Brewery has a great rustic feel to it and is a great big space! We really liked all the wooden tables, very unique. There are many places to sit and hang out, and also have darts! We loved sitting at the bar and taking a look at all they had to offer! There are so many beers to choose from that we ordered flights so we could try a bit of everything. The bartenders were also very nice and let us have a couple other small samples of drinks. Including a very intriguing Peach Jalapeño Sangria... A few beer stand outs were Yellow Beer, English Pale Ale, Gentle Giant, and Midwest Red Ale. The food was delicious and had a great variety of veggie options! Everything was fresh and filling! I had a Caprese salad and tomato soup! The salad had a bit too much dressing for me but that's not the worst thing ever, I'll just ask for it on the side next time. My brother had the beer bratwurst which was delicious, he loved the butter buns and the kicker chips! My sister in law loved her chicken wrap and pickles! What a cool former bakery-turned-brewery in a old-meets-modern industrial space. It's really cool to see a brewery start from the ground up - Old Bakery Beer is in its very early stages of production, brewing about 2-3000 barrels per year, if I remember correctly. In contrast, Schlafly, which has been around since 1991, brewed 56,000 barrels in 2013. Seeing this microbrewery build itself up will be a super cool thing to witness over the next couple of years. Currently, OBB is working on building up distribution and purchasing more kegs. They have plans to eventually do canning/bottling but probably not for the next year or two, according to their master brewer, James. I think it's really quite interesting to be able to enjoy the fruits of labor of a very new microbrewery! If you're an IPA fan you'll enjoy their Rye Pale Ale. It's lightly fruity/floral and not overly hoppy - an IPA skeptic would likely find this one quite palatable. The Yellow Ale is probably their lightest brew and is a good solid crowd favorite. I had the reuben sandwich from the regular menu and I thought it was very tasty - good melty cheese, sauerkraut, and a generous helping of corned beef - but the sandwich was quite small. It came on some marbled rye which was excellent, but the sandwich could not have been bigger than the size of my open hand. Think oblong regular sandwich bread. Which I suppose is great for portion control but I WANT MOAR MEAT FOR MY MONAYS! (The sandwich was $9). The pickled veggies are quite good too - not too salty for pickles! Comes with some pickled carrots, red peppers and asparagus. I came on a Monday night so it was a bit empty, but it looks like a great place to catch the game - there are a couple of flat screens over the long bar, and they have live music on weekends and other days of the week - check the website for their event schedule. My husband and I tried out Old Bakery Beer prior to moving to Alton and we loved it. I have a thing for old buildings, especially old buildings that are morphed into new uses. Upon entering from the parking lot, you get a beautiful view of the brewery equipment. I'm a nerd in general so this was something that I could have stopped and stared at forever. Walking down the hall you then enter another room of sorts that is semi museum/store - again I wanted to hang here for a bit and read everything because history and old buildings go hand in hand. The dining room portion was also nice - industrial almost - our waiter was attentive without being obnoxious. We both had a bacon burger and tried a variety of stouts. We are not beer people, certainly not people on the craft beer train at all but it was still really good. We had both the ceremony and reception in their event space and the space itself is so unique and beautiful we didn't have to decorate that much ourselves! We asked to exchange the beef for another item and they were more than happy to do that for us. The atmosphere was great and the tables were comfortable for our 5 person party. Our main takeaway is... Come for the beer, not for the food. The beer was good, we enjoyed it! The menu looked awesome so we decided to give it a try. I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Honestly... it was terrible! It sounded amazing on the menu, but the cheese wasn't melted all the way and the tomato soup was almost intolerable.
