Oiza is the answer every time someone asks where to go for a nice dinner in Fresno. I've taken people here multiple times and it has never once let me down. The sushi is beautiful. Not just visually, it actually tastes as good as it looks which isn't always the case. The rolls are creative without being gimmicky and the fish is fresh. The teppanyaki is fun if you want more of an experience, great for groups or dates. Cocktails are solid too. Not an afterthought like at a lot of sushi spots. They clearly put thought into the drink menu. The space feels upscale but not uncomfortable. Like you can dress up or just come after work and both feel fine. The ultimate date and special occasion spot. Always love the vibes when I walk in. I've been there 4x already (3x for dinner, 1x for lunch), and they never disappoint. The servers start off by pouring water over washcloths to wipe your hands when you get seated. The wagyu sando for lunch was just fine. I'd probably get their sushi obento for variety next time for lunch. For dinner, their Duo Delight is so worth it, which is their chef's choice sushi dinner for 2. Definitely a perfect amount of food with beautiful presentation. Their Kagawa Maki roll was tasty also. The Uni Udon Pasta was good if you want something a bit heavier. This was my first time eating here with friends, we had a reservation and were welcomed instantly! It was pretty busy but you know that means the food would be good. It was a beautiful restaurant, and I really appreciated the warm hand towels. They have a big menu, and I was a little confused on what each thing was but thankfully I looked up pictures on their Instagram and we were able to figure out what each item was or get a general idea. The wait staff were helpful and the drinks were great. I ordered a sushi roll and a temaki. I decided to try the fatty tuna with the sea urchin and caviar. It was pretty good! Our experience at Oiza was absolutely amazing. My husband took me out to dinner for my birthday . The restaurant is beautifully decorated; however, this time we chose to eat outside, where they have a patio and tables, comfortable and relaxing spot to eat as well. We both had our favorites, the King Salmon roll and the Hibachi Shrimp plate with steamed rice. For drinks, my husband had an Asahi and as for myself, I was very happy to see they had mocktails. I ended up choosing Hana Martini, which has now become my favorite mocktail. It has green tea, passion fruit, hibiscus, and pineapple flavors and it was such a great drink! For dessert, we ordered the taro tiramisu. It was the first time ever trying the dessert and we loved it. This place overall was a good experience. Our server and their staff were extremely attentive and we were very happy with how we were treated and where we were sat. Noise level wise even with a full house was moderate. The food though was just ok. The steak although cooked to medium rare had no sear and was more fatty than expected... I forget the name of the shrimp dish we ordered but came with mango and such underneath a friend piece of shrimp. Wasn't a fan of that. Edamame was good. The sake I had ordered had what I could not tell to be some sort particles or something from the dish washer when the bottle was washed or something. Didn't complain about it though. Was just doing my best to be mindful of it and just remove anything I had seen. I'd definitely recommend different bottles in the future maybe it was pieces of that? Our experience at O-iza just blew me away! We went for my birthday and it is a great place to celebrate a special occasion. Our server did forget the birthday parfait, which was a bit disappointing, but we really enjoyed the food!! We sat on the patio and were quite cold even with the fire heaters. It seems like you have to get lucky with the seating and the proximity to the heaters. For appetizers, we ordered the salmon spoons and DIY handroll set. The salmon spoons were crab wrapped in salmon and were very fun to eat. We also enjoyed the DIY handroll set, especially the salmon and tuna portion. The only downside was that it only came with 3 pieces of nori, which we thought wasn't enough. For our entrees, we ordered the uni carbonara, Kagawa Maki roll and the chirashi bowl. We did not love the uni carbonara and the thought it was lacking in flavor. The chirashi bowl on the other hand was phenomenal, with fresh cuts of fish upon a bed of fluffy rice. My husband has never gone here and so we decided to go as a family for dinner. So glad it was not a busy day, with no reservation we did a walk-in and was able to be seated in 5 mins. Because we were a walk-in we were told that we were limited to dine for an hour and 30 mins which is more than enough time. Thanks Leo for accommodating. We were seated and served water right away by Mindee and she was super sweet, I really think she has exceptional customer service. Kelly was our server and was pretty efficient and quick. The order: we got the Wagyu fried rice, which was absolutely delicious. It's buttery, has that charred flavor from the hot pot, great flavor. I think anyone who orders this dish will love it. I got the chirashi which I have had before and of course it was super good. The sushi rice below it was well prepared with some furikake flakes. The sashimi were thick pieces and very fresh. So excited to finally try out this restaurant! The decor is beautiful. I was immediately greeted with friendly smiles. You get free edamame for the table which had a great spicy garlic seasoning. Our server, Carrie, was very attentive and gave us updates when our dishes would be out soon. What I tried: Furikake bone marrow (5/5): Amazing. A flavor bomb. The chimichurri cuts through the fattiness of the bone marrow and the pickled onions add a nice kick. The milk bread was perfectly toasted and fluffy on the inside. Definitely try this! Pan seared umi scallops (4/5): The scallops were perfect. The prosciutto salad was the perfect accompaniment and so light and fresh. The saffron risotto, however, was not my favorite. Loved that it was loaded with different mushrooms, but it lacked any flavor. Black sesame hazelnut (10/5): This is what I was looking forward to all night! I loveeee anything black sesame, so I made sure to leave room in my stomach! The presentation is beautiful. The black sesame ice cream was sweet and nutty, exactly what I was hoping for. Somehow in my head, I thought it was in the location of 'Nami' restaurant near Woodward Park, but it is located close by to Target in the Riverpark shopping center near the Regal theater. There are two patios you can choose from, but only TWO tables 'for two' that are more private (which I would have preferred) rather than dining at the long sections of multiple seating offered. Because of the table set up, (which is VERY close to other diners) you can clearly hear conversations on either side of you. . . even when you don't want to. . . and THEY can hear YOU! That was a big minus for me. I felt too confined. Seating was just too close for comfort. :/ The interior is 'airy', peaceful, and pleasing. Low volume music plays in the background. Service is attentive and cheerful. Rose scented, hot steamy towels are offered (to clean your hands after the complementary edamame appetizer) and is a special touch! Guys. Our special day was made even more special by a wonderful blend of delectable menu options, thoughtful service and ambiance. The menu presented extensive and adventurous options that as first timers could have been intimidating but with the help of Donavin our delightful server, we selected the perfect seafood salad for the Mrs. and the curated selection of Maki (delicious sushi "tacos") that together made for the perfect share. Add to that a smooth Japanese beer and a surprisingly moderate overcast that made our dinner on the patio the perfect way to celebrate our first meeting 47 years ago. I enjoyed my second visit just as much of course-- but it was just much more noticeable when we were a big crowd of how excellent the service was. I'm sorry, I can't remember the roll I ordered the first visit but it was something with salmon on top. Plus, the Salmon Spoons (delish) and a margarita x2. My friends all ordered a variety of things and we all just shared a bite here and there. Second visit, I remember a little better because it was this year... we got the Hamachi Ceviche (very good), the Wagyu Fried Rice (good but not my fave-- loved the presentation), the Fujiyama roll, and the Hi Tuna (both good). For dessert, we got the Black Sesame Hazelnut (wanted to love this but i feel the peanut flavor was a little too strong-- I wanted more black sesame). Inside was very pretty was well, they've really made it a lot nicer than when it was a burger place, but the weather was just too pleasant to stay inside. Our server, Carlye, was wonderful. She was attentive and had no problem answering any questions. Plus she was fun to talk to. Unfortunately, the food was really mediocre. My spouse enjoyed the ebi carbonara, but I thought it was a weird combination that was way too rich. Sadly, the sushi rolls were really bland and had a weird texture, almost grainy? I'm not sure, but I've never had such unsatisfying sushi before except when I was paying way less. The drinks were ok, but very sweet. Definitely not an old fashioned, which primarily highlights the spirit. These just tasted like brown sugar. Overall, it was a really disappointing meal for how overpriced it is. I was in Fresno to visit my friend from college and she wanted to take me here for my pre-bday celebration. I let her order her usuals: - A-5 Hot Rock: wagu beef that our waitress cooks on a hot plate, and serves over some Bibb lettuce. We asked for medium well, and it was very tender. With some cucumber kimchi as garnish, they were like a healthy version of tacos. - Furikake Bone Marrow: my friend prepared the shokupan bread (Japanese milk bread) with the nori chimichurri spread, then scrape the bone marrow was seasoned with furikake, and topped with pickled onion. Prob one of my fave dishes. - Hamachi ceviche: I love this Japanese style ceviche which includes hamachi fish, avocado, Asian pear, radish, shallots, jalapeño, and seaweed chips in place of tortilla chips. Very tasty spin in my opinion. - Honey wasabi shrimp: tempura fried shrimp with honey wasabi glaze served over sushi rolls. Very filling and huge shrimps. - Spring mix salad: the black sesame dressing with this salad makes it refreshing! For drinks I got the matcha martini, which is different than the ones I've had in Japan. This one is more on the citrusy side. It had some gold flakes in the drink and rimmed with matcha salt. Since it was my birthday they brought out a complimentary matcha icecream that had red bean, cereal flakes, and green tea pocket sticks. They even brought out a little gift bag with a cute card inside. Overall, the staff was very attentive and the aesthetic of the restaurant is beautiful and upscale.
