One of the most valuable skills developed is to overcome stage fright. Ms Lulu encourages students to do self-introductions, modelling/cat-walk, sing, dance, and build overall stage presence. This may sound simple but can actually be quite challenging. Being able to confidently acquire this skill takes a dash of grit and more importantly - the opportunities to practice! Ms Lulu works hard to consistently create these opportunities for students in a wide variety of settings! From one-on-one voice lessons, to formal recitals, to community venues, to municipal events, to modelling at fashion shows, to filming music videos, to singing national anthems and performances at crowded sports stadiums, to highly advertised music events in crowded college campuses. She was calm, accommodating and patient. Steps were modified and tailored base on fiance and my grasp of the new routine. At the end my fiance and I pulled through the first dance and was very happy with what we were capable of achieving with a near impromptu dance session. Special Guest this evening is radio personality, Shotgun Tom Kelly. He published a book and was the Emcee for the evening. A book signing event was held in the lobby before and after the show. It was not a Stages Theater regular production, but it was presented by Alchemy who rented the facility, Perhaps Alchemy productions will continue as a wandering generality, homeless until they succumb to the elements. In the meantime, avoid any production bearing their name, for your own good.

Kawika was easy to work with and very friendly. He told me he hadn't actually thrown a back yard luau in a long time because he gets booked up with corporate gigs so much. I felt honored his troop was able to accommodate me. I had a little idea of what his group did, but when the young man came out and started blowing on the conch shell, I knew we were in for a treat! The music was amazing! So pleasing to the soul and expertly performed. I've been to Hawaii numerous times and this was on par or better than anything I heard on my previous trips. While they were setting up I had Hawaiian music playing and I overheard Kawika singing along with it... Such an amazing voice. His son was equally impressive. When the dancers came out everyone gasped with awe! The had various costume changes and audience participation. It was my first time doing hula... And it showed! Thankfully I had a few glasses of liquid courage to get me to shake my bum! If you're considering a luau you should definitely consider this group! I expected basic elementary school productions, but I was so surprised and impressed by how professional they were and by the performances of all the students. That experience led us to sign my eight-year-old grandson up for their summer production of James and the Giant Peach, and it was one of the best decisions we could have made. Kris Huston and her team truly focus on teaching the fundamentals of musical theater. The students aren't just learning their parts--they're learning real theater skills and what goes into putting on a quality production. I've watched my grandson grow and polish his skills through these three productions, while gaining confidence and, most importantly, having so much fun. You can see that same growth and training reflected in the wonderful performances of all the students. I look forward to watching him continue with Huston Performing Arts and seeing his skills and love for theater grow over the years.
