Underwater camera caught a beauty
Pamela O.

Late in writing this review... just stumbled across some photos from my vacation. I'm also writing this review because I noticed a negative review that really bugged me. I'm a small business owner and I feel it's not fair when people just vent on yelp rather than provide honest feedback on their experience. So hopefully this review helps! We had such an amazing time on this tour! We got to see so much marine life and also swim with turtles. Curtis was so knowledgable about Maui and gave us some great recommendations for the rest of our time on the island. Such great people doing what they love, sharing what they know for us to enjoy. I without a doubt, HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this tour!

Such a fun time! We got to swim with sea turtles and the weather couldn't have been more perfect! Curtis and Tiffany were excellent guides that provided clear instructions, were super friendly, and hospitable. They genuinely cared and just wanted us to have a good time! Would definitely recommend! Bring an underwater cam if you can!

You know sometimes you're doing an experience with a group of people you don't know and it just feels awkward, well not even a moment of awkwardness was felt! It was amazing! Not only did they teach us the history but made us feel incredibly safe and made sure everyone was taking safety seriously. It is a smaller raft, which honestly was really nice. Kept the group small which is something I prefer. And because of the smaller group, it really makes the experience more personal. And for me, it also makes the boat ride a lot more fun! Mahalo lui noa for a beautiful morning!!!

Disappointing Experience and Poor Customer Service…read more We booked this snorkeling excursion because the business advertised that swimming was not a requirement. Since I don't know how to swim, we specifically called on the day of the trip to confirm that non-swimmers were welcome, and we were reassured that they were. Imagine our surprise when a guide asked us at check-in, "What are you doing here if you don't know swimming?" Once we reached the snorkeling location, I became frightened and uncomfortable, and the flotation device provided wasn't comfortable for me. I understand that snorkeling isn't for everyone and that safety must come first. What disappointed us was the crew's dismissive attitude when we struggled. Comments like "Yeah, that face is not okay" and "You won't be fine" were discouraging, even as we were trying to gather the courage to try again. Another upsetting moment was when one of our group members was vomiting and the captain repeatedly told them to throw up farther away because they were "painting the side of my boat." We understand the practical challenges of seasickness, but a little compassion toward someone who is visibly unwell goes a long way. We weren't expecting special treatment or for the crew to compromise anyone's safety. We simply expected clear communication, respectful treatment, and some empathy. The issue isn't that I couldn't snorkel. It's that we specifically confirmed non-swimmers were welcome and were then made to feel unwelcome and excluded for being non-swimmers. If a certain level of swimming ability or water confidence is necessary, the business should communicate that clearly before booking. Unfortunately, the gap between what we were told and how we were treated made this a wasted trip and a one-star experience. I cannot recommend this excursion based on our experience.

When we arrived in Maui, there were rains and storms, which made me nervous that some plans might fall through anyway! On the day of our excursion, plans did indeed change- Zephyr called several hours before to let us know that our initial meetup spot wouldn't work due to poor conditions. They offered a reschedule, or a change of the meetup spot, which we were happy to do. When we arrived at the new spot our guide, Payson, already had the kayaks and gear set up, but explained that, due to shifting winds, he would have to make another adjustment to the original plans to make sure we stayed safe. He also offered to reschedule if we weren't amenable to the changes. As a client based professional myself, I was very impressed that Zephyr as a company would rather take a loss for a day than be unsafe or disappoint. (Also of note is that they offer a turtle guarantee- if you don't see what you came to see, they will take you out again sans additional charge) Even with the changes, everything worked out and we ended up having a great day of it! What we saw was even more beautiful than I had imagined! I think this is in great part due to Payson's extensive knowledge of the area. We were taken to a beautiful coral reef filled with parrot fish and other smaller fishes. He was able to educate us on the reef and the wildlife. We were even able to hold up a pencil sea urchin, super cool! We also saw plenty of turtles, including one that was being cleaned of algae by small fish! Payson took plenty of pictures and videos, which we were able to purchase afterward for a reasonable fee. Overall, we are super impressed with Payson as a guide and are incredibly satisfied with our experience with Zephyr! This will most certainly be the highlight of our trip, can't recommend these people enough!

The only regrets we have is that we didn't find out about Zephyr Maui sooner! Extremely good…read moreexperience from booking to being out in the water and professional pictures at the end! I usually do nto allow free or comp passes to get a good idea of typical service of a tour or activity, and this was the same. At first arrival, we were greeted by a friendly front desk staff that checked us in. They had some cool merch and some photo op areas while you waited for the guide. They had a makeshift, yet inoperable bar, where you could order some items, however, none were really made fresh or made by hand except their infused water. Everything else was already pre-packed and sold a premium, even above the grocery store premiums, so that was a let down. I wish they had not been promoting it if it was not ready for custom or craft cocktails and pours. It was a big tease. The guide came to get us and was high energy. He took us to the processing area where they clean/package the pineapples. It was unique in its own Hawaiian way, but we only stood in the area of their marketing banners and were told "we need to get moving as there is another group." We saw no packing, no movement or other. We didn't get to really look around and see the cool things within the packaging plant. That was a let down as well. They had a massive facility and we only saw a small portion of it for those who like to geek out with "how it's made" type businesses. We were then rushed on to a rickety shuttle bus and taken to various parts of the field down the street. We did get to see the workers harvest and we got to experience a plantation tasting with some more history. That was a cool experience not many get to do in the field. We made another stop and took more photos and then it was done. The tour itself was maybe an hour with another 10-20mins inside the shuttle just creeping along the uneven, winding dirt tracks in the field. That's expected. Overall it was a good tour, however, the 3-star rating mainly comes from the elements that I remember not being good. First, the price, this was an extremely overpriced tour. This should be more of a $25-$35 price point. I would not pay $90+ for another tour like this, even with the "free" pineapple. I did it for the family, but I would NOT do it for a group. This was not a luxury or elevated experience that was worthy of that price point. Second, the tour guide, although friendly, he was so rushed and kept moving us quickly as to get through the tour as soon as he could. He was not in it, you can tell he was kind of fake, but he was a local as he was trying to teach some words and spoke in native tongues as well. Not a bad guy, but doesn't seem his heart was in it. Third, requesting tips. I can't stand when guides request tips and place signs asking for tips on activities and tours. This is tacky and had a negative impact on my experience. Fourth, not having the bar open to have a true custom experience, but then trying to sell Arizona tea at a premium price with a tip jar just made it more unappealing especially when it was just a tease with taps that didn't work. Fifth, there were other groups there on top of each other. It seems they try and stack groups B2B as some are from online sales, some from DMC, some from private guides, Viator or other avenues like the pairing options. It was obvious they really try to supplement the farm with tours, and the guide stated that. There are not hundreds of people on site at once as they are good about rotating the groups quickly and there's not much else to do, so everyone leaves as soon as they're done, but you get that feeling while on the tour itself. Again, all staff were nice, but not sure who trained them to ask for tips. Seems to be an island thing as most other tours asked for the same...but not much anywhere else in the world. Overall, it was rushed. We didn't get to see the packing process or other parts of the plant as I was hoping for. They need updated signage as some of it just looks old. The guide was in a hurry. These things just weighed more heavily on the shorter and abbreviated experience we had in the field. Based on my experience, I didn't see anyone really buy a pineapple in the 30 mins before and 30 mins after (shopping) the tour. I felt like this was more of a $90+ pineapple with a free tour as an afterthought. I was hoping for more as there are limited options and usually the only tour on the island is the best. This was not the case this time around. I would pass on this unless you just really must see a plantation and having a slice in the field...if not, you're better off just buying the pineapple and grabbing lunch next door. The tour just wasn't unique enough to justify the price. Wear closed toe shoes ideally, crocs are fine. Dress for the weather.

She did a thorough introduction before we went out on the water, helped us get on/off our kayaks with ease, and made sure we were all safe while respecting the Hawaiian waters and their majestic creatures. We saw so many whales breach in every direction, heard their songs clearly above water and under water with the paddle trick. Kris also took a few photos of us while we were out there! It can be a little difficult to hear out there on the water, so be sure to speak up and ask your tour guide to repeat if needed. Would have loved to hear more about facts about the whales and Maui in general, and it'd be cool if the tour guides used Hawaiian words like "Huli" which means "flip over". Luckily we didn't huli! Tip: Be sure to hydrate, eat a snack, wear reef safe sunscreen, long sleeves if it looks cold, stretch your hammies, and use the restroom beforehand as they don't offer these during the tour. I wish I brought my hydroflask, but I survived! Also, help out your locals and leave a tip if they meet your expectations!
