If you are a history buff, you have to check out the Portsmouth Athenaeum! The front door is…read moresomewhat hidden but if you walk a little bit up the block from Starbucks you'll find it. Couple flights of stairs or an elevator and you find yourself in the middle of a pretty neat research library. We went to the North End History exhibit and it was super-informative and very interesting. Lots of neat old photos and details about parts of Portsmouth we drive by on a regular basis without realizing their historical significance. Ask for James, ask a few questions, and sit back and laugh as he takes the history of the area and wraps it up in funny and memorable stories and anecdotes. Just a note - finish your food and coffee before visiting. There are some incredibly old books in this place and you don't want to spill!

We met a man who was working (or was he just hanging out? not sure) there and was nice enough to give us a special tour of the place! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Portsmouth and was so passionate about the town. I saw some really neat artifacts here, including whale vertebrae...which totally made me squeal in excitement. Just take a visit to the Portsmouth Athenaeum and strike up a conversation. You never know what you will discover!

By 1831 the bank became a custom house and somewhere around 1898 the library moved into the second floor of the old custom house. The needs for custom house declined and by 1913 the library took over the entire building. Over the decades the library expanded and changed and major additions and renovations were made in 1920, 1956 and in 1988. The library today is a fascinating place, not as grand as other libraries from the out side, it's easy to imagine it's banking heritage. The inside is lovely and so quaint, with lots of art, antiques and lovely staircases and windows. The library is very kid friendly and lots of stuff animals and cute pictures adorn the children's room. The librarians were so sweet and friendly and made sure we stopped in the huge books sale in the building next door. This library has changed a lot during the years but still has a very quiet and reserved elegance to it. A building a library that suits the historic town of Kennebunkport very well

There is an elevator so those with wheelchair or strollers, yay. In the basement they sell used books. I spent $8 and got some great books for our homeschool library collection. The children's area is quiet and found on the second floor at the front of the building. There are original murals of children's literature that were painted in 1930 on the walls. There were 3 or 4 rooms dedicate to children and teens with a great book selection. We will be going back for sure in the future.
