I was in Portsmouth for a day and needed to kill some time so I spent several hours at this…read morelibrary. There's a lot of chairs and tables by windows so you can get some natural sunlight while you read or work. The second floor has a lot of maps and information about Portsmouth which is nice if you're unfamiliar with the area. The staff is very friendly and help. I'd definitely like to visit again sometime!

There is an elevator so those with wheelchair or strollers, yay. In the basement they sell used books. I spent $8 and got some great books for our homeschool library collection. The children's area is quiet and found on the second floor at the front of the building. There are original murals of children's literature that were painted in 1930 on the walls. There were 3 or 4 rooms dedicate to children and teens with a great book selection. We will be going back for sure in the future.

Banks books and…read morecustoms The building that the Kennebunkport Library is presently located in actually was built in 1813 and was originally a bank. By 1831 the bank became a custom house and somewhere around 1898 the library moved into the second floor of the old custom house. The needs for custom house declined and by 1913 the library took over the entire building. Over the decades the library expanded and changed and major additions and renovations were made in 1920, 1956 and in 1988. The library today is a fascinating place, not as grand as other libraries from the out side, it's easy to imagine it's banking heritage. The inside is lovely and so quaint, with lots of art, antiques and lovely staircases and windows. The library is very kid friendly and lots of stuff animals and cute pictures adorn the children's room. The librarians were so sweet and friendly and made sure we stopped in the huge books sale in the building next door. This library has changed a lot during the years but still has a very quiet and reserved elegance to it. A building a library that suits the historic town of Kennebunkport very well

I am a fan of renovating old mills, so this library's location didn't disappoint! I went on a Monday morning, around 10, with my 15-month-old daughter. We were the only ones there. I was delighted when we turned the corner to enter the library. It's very nicely decorated! It still needs work in some areas, but it's clear that a lot of thought and work has gone into making this a comfortable and inviting place. The librarian was SO nice. We had a friendly conversation and she was very helpful. I'd like to come back for storytime to get a more well-rounded picture. The only reason for 4 stars at this time...no baby changing station in the bathroom (which was a little icky...)! It's fine...I'm used to changing her on the floor no matter where we are. But sometimes it's awkward with other people around. Thankfully, we were all alone.

Fires books and…read moreweddings The Cape Porpoise Library is a small community library located in the Cape Porpoise section of the town of Kennebunkport. A small, one room library, it is actually part of an old building called Atlantic Hall. Atlantic Hall was an old fire house built around 1914 but when the new fire station was completed across the street in 1959, Atlantic Hall became available for local and private events. Lots of parties, weddings, celebrates, concerts and even lobster bakes have been held in the hall. The library is small but definitely full of charm and history. Not a whole lot of books or materials but the larger and far more useful Kennebunkport town library is located only a short distance away. The library is just one room but has a lovely ambiance with old and new photos, comfy places to sit and lots of cute and interesting stuff kind of scattered about. Not a huge or stunning library but one that is definitely unique. This place is an anachronism, a library that reflects how things use to be. You can get a book, use a computer and even have a lobster bake, attend a party, or get married upstairs. Just the way people have done for a long time.

The disappointing part was they had no paperbacks. The good part was the hardback selection was very good for a small library and the prices were very reasonable.

This library is teeny-tiny but manages to have a pretty amazing selection. Nearly every book I…read morewant to read, they have. Don't be fooled by the small selection at the top level - check their catalog or ask the (exceedingly) friendly staff if they have what you want, as there's an entire lower level that the librarians have access to (it's not open to the public, but they will gladly go down and find what you want). They also offer a lot of community services, like CPR classes and children's activities.
