By 1831 the bank became a custom house and somewhere around 1898 the library moved into the second floor of the old custom house. The needs for custom house declined and by 1913 the library took over the entire building. Over the decades the library expanded and changed and major additions and renovations were made in 1920, 1956 and in 1988. The library today is a fascinating place, not as grand as other libraries from the out side, it's easy to imagine it's banking heritage. The inside is lovely and so quaint, with lots of art, antiques and lovely staircases and windows. The library is very kid friendly and lots of stuff animals and cute pictures adorn the children's room. The librarians were so sweet and friendly and made sure we stopped in the huge books sale in the building next door. This library has changed a lot during the years but still has a very quiet and reserved elegance to it. A building a library that suits the historic town of Kennebunkport very well

There is an elevator so those with wheelchair or strollers, yay. In the basement they sell used books. I spent $8 and got some great books for our homeschool library collection. The children's area is quiet and found on the second floor at the front of the building. There are original murals of children's literature that were painted in 1930 on the walls. There were 3 or 4 rooms dedicate to children and teens with a great book selection. We will be going back for sure in the future.

I love old libraries and love old libraries made out of old stones the best. This entire building is made out of local field stones. Incredibly stunning to look at. I spent some time just walking around the lovely building admiring the work and textures of the library. Of course having lovely gardens outside the library doesn't exactly hurt the experience. But the library is more than just a lovely building made from cool stones and surround by beautiful flowers. Although that would probably be enough for me to give it five stars. However to make things even better the inside of the library is lovely too. All kinds of cool things are inside; great old pictures, stuffed owls, huge grandfather clocks, lovely ceilings, rocking chairs and even a small model of the library. It even has books, periodicals and computers but you can find those at any library. This library is definitely something special, both on the inside and out. Maine has a whole lot of very cool libraries but this one is really, really one of the most stunning.

It's also made of stone, but the style is more Tudor and the inside is larger. This library is relatively small, but it's well laid out, elegant in design and functional. It was built in 1897. You can read its history on the library website. It gladdened my heart just to sit inside it. I checked the shelves of books for sale, a relatively small collection left over from the book sale, according to the librarian, a cordial young woman w/ an English accent who grew up in London, but didn't find a copy of "A Gentleman in Moscow". There are the usual computers and shelves and shelves of books. The library is open from 9-12 and 2-5 daily, except Sundays. In the winter it's closed Sunday, Monday and holidays.
