Stones clocks and…read moreowls The Ogunquit Library is a relatively small building that was dedicated and built in 1897. As with most libraries of the time it was constructed with private money. I love old libraries and love old libraries made out of old stones the best. This entire building is made out of local field stones. Incredibly stunning to look at. I spent some time just walking around the lovely building admiring the work and textures of the library. Of course having lovely gardens outside the library doesn't exactly hurt the experience. But the library is more than just a lovely building made from cool stones and surround by beautiful flowers. Although that would probably be enough for me to give it five stars. However to make things even better the inside of the library is lovely too. All kinds of cool things are inside; great old pictures, stuffed owls, huge grandfather clocks, lovely ceilings, rocking chairs and even a small model of the library. It even has books, periodicals and computers but you can find those at any library. This library is definitely something special, both on the inside and out. Maine has a whole lot of very cool libraries but this one is really, really one of the most stunning.

I've been coming to this library ever since I was in elementary school. It has always been…read moresufficient for the small town of Wells. They are always staying updated and often getting new books. The place became much nicer and felt less crammed with the renovations and addition in 2018. The dedicated children's section is often having activities such as an after-school Lego and Rubik's Cube club on Fridays. The new quiet study room in the addition also expands the adult section and makes the space feel more open. There is something for everyone at this library!

Dunaway Community Center is the venue where we saw a concert featuring Paul Sullivan and Con…read moreFullam. It was the first concert of the 29th Annual Capriccio Music Festival presented by Ogunquit Performing Arts. We had seen Paul Sullivan in concert in Damariscotta, Maine 25 or 30 years ago and enjoyed the concert so much we bought all 5 CDs he had out at the time. When I learned from his email a few months ago that he would be performing tonight Alan and I discussed rearranging our itinerary slightly so we could see him. The center was built in1974 w/ $250,000 given by philanthropist Sanford Judson Dunaway. It looks as if it houses civic offices as well as the performances space. Architecturally it looks mid-century New England. Parking lots are on the side and in the back. A walkway leads from the back parking lot to the front entrance of the community center. There are basketball courts next door which were closed from 6 PM to 11 PM tonight, probably because of the concert. The auditorium is large, w/ a stage in front. Comfortably padded blue chairs had been set up in rows w/ aisles separating the center section from two side sections. There are a couple of bathrooms on the main level, one all gender, the other marked 'staff only' which means people unfamiliar w/ the facility wouldn't know they could use it--or even that it was a bathroom--unless they were told. It would be good if temporary signs were posted at future events alerting people to this. The concert piano was a 122 year old Steinway which had been rescued and restored by Betty Dunaway Burnham, a local pianist and Judson Dunaway's daughter, who was chair of the board of Ogunquit Performing Arts and two master piano tuners she engaged, Frank Hanson and Vincent D'Errico. The piano tuners bought the abused piano from a piano dealer and restored it to life. Once their work was done they sold the piano to OPA at cost, donating their labor to restore it, w/ the agreement that they would maintain it, again donating their labor. The only caveats were that the piano could be used only for OPA performances and that they would maintain it. The piano is a 7'9" Concert Model C w/ an ebony finish. It looks and sounds magnificent and OPA is justifiably proud of it.

When we arrived at the campground (after calling ahead to make sure our dogs were allowed which we were told they were) we were told we could only have a day pass and not stay the night because that was "too many vistitors" even though that was never stated when original call was made to check. The family friend who was renting the site went down to talk to Linda and she stated "your wife and that boy are liars" the boy being my boyfriend who tried to check in after we thought we had dotted all our i's and crossed all our t's. Their websites rules were completely different from what Linda was telling us and I 1000% would not recommend anyone waste their time or money on this place. 0/10 for us. I usually don't make a point to write reviews ever but I just found the whole process ridiculous. If you want to have rules and regulations great but make them universal with your website and staff instead of saying one thing on the website then it being another story once people arrive.

Back in the late '90's, an obviously-bored Biddeford cop illegally detained me for almost an hour…read moremerely because --- after stopping me merely because I had salvaged a discarded-and-smashed-and-obviously-much-weathered TV set and was carrying it to my aunt's car to take it home and strip it for parts --- I did not have any ID and my name didn't come up when he ran it. The cop really had an arrogant and artificially-suspicious attitude, claiming that he didn't believe me regarding who I said I was because "You're a young man, and young men automatically have a criminal record, so you must be lying to me about who you are." What planet of prejudiced MORONS was HE from --- is it actually a DISADVANTAGE in the eyes of the law if I've simply BEEN GOOD ALL MY LIFE?! He even went so far as to run the plate on my aunt's car to see if anything about IT came back as a problem. He should have been GLAD that I was cleaning up the environment, not make me feel scared and humiliated for doing so! They also seriously need to upgrade their street-markings --- on one side-street, they had a confusing double-headed arrow painted at the end of it where it intersected with the main drag, seemingly indicating that it was a one-way street where you were supposed to change to the left or right lanes respectively if you wanted to turn left or right; I nearly got head-onned by a huge SUV that barreled around the blind corner on the left-hand side! What we pay taxes for, and they can't even mark their streets properly or train their officers ethically!

That's not as important as it used to be, but this is my 1000th review and we tend to pick them carefully. I suppose that I'm the first to commemorate number 1000 by reviewing Biddeford, Maine but it's no accident. Biddeford is an amazing little city. First, an incredibly abbreviated history lesson. Skip this paragraph if you understand mill towns. Biddeford's mill town community was the workplace and home for generations of immigrants. They came to the mills looking for employment and they started at the bottom, being poorly paid and working under conditions that we would never tolerate today. The mills were busy for years but became obsolete due a new technology called electricity. The old mill buildings became run down and abandoned, the towns were stuck with massive unemployment, crime increased, and it was really bad. Biddeford was luckier than many other mill towns because it became a bedroom community for Portland's workers and because the mills were re-used to make Vellux blankets, but downtown was still depressed. I first saw Biddeford in the 80's and it wasn't pretty. Not only had it been depressed for quite a while, but a huge incinerator called MERC was built downtown and it stunk. And it stayed that way into the 21st century. Fast forward to now and Biddeford is changing fast. The abandoned mills were bought by people with a vision. MERC was finally closed. People have been attracted by the cheap rents in the mills and they're being refurbished at an astonishing rate. I haven't been able to confirm it, but about one-third of the million-plus square feet of mill space has apparently been renovated. There's a group of people who give tours of the old run down mill buildings and they say that in a year or two here won't be anything left to see because it will all have been rebuilt and occupied. There are art galleries, coffee shops, concerts in the local parks, all kinds of ethnic restaurants, and new businesses seem to be opening almost every day. In the last few months, the city has gotten curbside recycling and a new supermarket. This is good stuff for a city that many had written off and I'm glad to write about it for my milestone of review number 1000. I'm giving the city of Biddeford four stars because there's still work to be done and more than a few local politicians act like they prefer the good old days of urban blight. Some bigger businesses have been unable to move to Biddeford because there's not enough parking and there's a big debate about whether the city should build a parking lot. A bright future for Biddeford is within reach and I'm excited to have a ringside seat in my artist studio, located in one of Biddeford's nearly-full mill buildings. And no, I'm not running for office. I'm just excited about where things can go.

Simple, decorative, some include memorials to the departed. The town also placed a couple of memorials here to memorialize residents buried elsewhere. The property is in good condition on a tree filled lot. It's a serene spot appropriate for an historical cemetery. Parking on Lindsay Rd is free. No services. Town hall is across the street. Road side displays on York St. include information on some of those interred as well as nearby historic sites. You can spend a good deal of time reading headstones and monuments here.

We never have had any issues navigating the bridge. One review talks about coming around the bend and you can see the bridge in the distance. You just know you are getting close. Then when you are on the bridge and you see the sign... entering Maine. From there you are coming off the Blue Star Turnpike into the Maine Turnpike.

This steel through arch bridge was completed in 1972, six lanes.. three in each way spanning across 4,503 ft. We travel this bridge every time we are on vacation in Maine. It's easy to cross over and lucky never had any delays. Beautiful views on both sides.
