One thing that stands…read moreout is that they lend more than books; they lend out telescopes, binoculars, puzzles, games, park and museum passes, knitting and crochet needles, and even ukuleles. Many programs for children which is nice. Free tech time appointments so you can work with a librarian to answer questions. During the winter they tend fires in their reading rooms. Free WiFi and good study spots.

A library by the…read more sea As real estate people are constantly stating, location is one of the most important things in a house or building. The Libby Library of Old Orchard Beach isn't particular large but it certainly has plenty of location. Right next to a lovely park and just a minute walk to the beach is hard to beat. The inside of the library is a bit cramped and narrow and it doesn't have a whole lot of comfy places to sit but it does have some nice old things scattered around and even a shed in the back with a whole bunch of used books at dirt cheap prices. The librarians and people at the library were extremely nice and friendly and seemed to enjoy talking to us and telling us about the cool town . They do recognize that the library is a bit small for the town now and they are trying to raise funds for a larger building. Until then this building will have to serve. If the inside of the library gets too crowded or cramped you can always go outside in the nice park or better yet walk across the street the water. Not the grandest library in the world but it certainly has a whole lot of location.

There is an elevator so those with wheelchair or strollers, yay. In the basement they sell used books. I spent $8 and got some great books for our homeschool library collection. The children's area is quiet and found on the second floor at the front of the building. There are original murals of children's literature that were painted in 1930 on the walls. There were 3 or 4 rooms dedicate to children and teens with a great book selection. We will be going back for sure in the future.

Banks books and…read morecustoms The building that the Kennebunkport Library is presently located in actually was built in 1813 and was originally a bank. By 1831 the bank became a custom house and somewhere around 1898 the library moved into the second floor of the old custom house. The needs for custom house declined and by 1913 the library took over the entire building. Over the decades the library expanded and changed and major additions and renovations were made in 1920, 1956 and in 1988. The library today is a fascinating place, not as grand as other libraries from the out side, it's easy to imagine it's banking heritage. The inside is lovely and so quaint, with lots of art, antiques and lovely staircases and windows. The library is very kid friendly and lots of stuff animals and cute pictures adorn the children's room. The librarians were so sweet and friendly and made sure we stopped in the huge books sale in the building next door. This library has changed a lot during the years but still has a very quiet and reserved elegance to it. A building a library that suits the historic town of Kennebunkport very well

Wonderful children's section with bountiful books and daily activities 6. Availability of e-books and audio-books for those who are so inclined 7. Nice seating areas 8. Easy return and re-new options 9. Local benefits for library card holders (tickets, and discounts, and stuff) 10. I couldn't find out much about the history of the building but I suspect it had an original part built by William Widgery Thomas and then kept growing and expanding through the years. A very distinctive and unique place that just oozes charm and charisma. Even through it has been around for a while the library is very modern and has all the conveniences that would expect. Lot of the books, magazines and a cool young adult room, children's room and even a lounge area where people can unload their kids while they look around. A very user friendly place. But just being functional and pleasant isn't what makes this library so special. It is a very cool building with all kinds of great art and history. Such a strange and long building, it has surprises around ever corner. We had a great time here because everyone, from the librarians to the other users of the library, were just so pleasant and friendly. Still a place to meet and talk to people and not just look for books. The outside or the library is lovely with gardens and flowers everywhere. Everything about his library is so unique, cool and special. I've been to a whole lot of libraries but the William Widgery Thomas library is definitely in my top five. It is that cool and special. William Widgery Thomas summed it up when he wrote, " I hope that this will prove a little lighthouse of knowledge... It is for you, inhabitants of Cape Elizabeth, to keep the lamp burning so that it shall shine over this town forever".

The staff are very friendly and accommodating if you need to find a book or use a computer. I love coming in here to relax and read or to print something. It's free for locals. 5c a page to print.

A work in…read moreprogress The Walker Memorial Library is Westbrook was constructed back in 1894 from private donations from the Walker family. Lots of libraries during that time period were built by money from individual citizens or families. The library is lovely from the outside, a huge and looming Gothic type of structure that was typical of the time. And like many lovely libraries built over a century ago soon proved to be too small so various additions were added over the years. The library is once again being renovated to make it more efficient and user friendly for the twenty first century. Unfortunately that means the very old part is going to be closed to the public for a while. Too bad, because as far as I'm concerted that is the best part. The library still is pretty cool but not nearly as large as it looks from the outside. Still has just about everything you would expect from a library but you kind of have to put up with the construction being done. Hard to really give this library it's full due. It does have some very cool windows, lots of flowers both inside and out and some friendly librarians. Not a whole lot of books and other materials or cool places to sit but then a large portion of the cool library isn't available. Hopefully the money will be raised and the work finally completed and the venerable, historic and lovely old library will once again be ready to continues into the next century.
