    Arabella's library

Books birds and Arabella The Rice Library in Kittery is a stunning building that was constructed in 1888 from money left in her will by Arabella Rice. It was designed by the famous Boston architect Sheperd Woodcock and is a classic Victorian with a bit of Romanesque thrown in for good measure, Made from brick dragged up from Philadelphia, the inside features a lovely vaulted ceiling, great stained glass windows and lovely wooden staircases. Elegance but tasteful aesthetics everywhere you look. The original library once held a huge collection of stuff birds on the second floor but that is now the children's area. The birds are gone, replaced by a whole lot of fun stuff for kids. In 1991 another generous patron gave a large sum of money to the library and major renovations took place. Fortunately none of the original flavor and beauty of the library was compromised. A wonderful library not only for the people of Kittery but also for anyone visiting the town and wants to do some research of get some information in a stunningly lovely Victorian building.

Very kind and thoughtful staff with a clean and well curated space. The child story time is our families favorite!

Couple flights of stairs or an elevator and you find yourself in the middle of a pretty neat research library. We went to the North End History exhibit and it was super-informative and very interesting. Lots of neat old photos and details about parts of Portsmouth we drive by on a regular basis without realizing their historical significance. Ask for James, ask a few questions, and sit back and laugh as he takes the history of the area and wraps it up in funny and memorable stories and anecdotes. Just a note - finish your food and coffee before visiting. There are some incredibly old books in this place and you don't want to spill!

We met a man who was working (or was he just hanging out? not sure) there and was nice enough to give us a special tour of the place! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Portsmouth and was so passionate about the town. I saw some really neat artifacts here, including whale vertebrae...which totally made me squeal in excitement. Just take a visit to the Portsmouth Athenaeum and strike up a conversation. You never know what you will discover!

Ok so despite my review this is actually not a bad college in terms of aesthetic and campus appeal…read more(for a community college) it is very updated and modern and beautiful. The issue comes with the teaching. It is very one sided whereas only the professors side is shown and accepted. For instance climate change and evolution are taught as fact even though they are theory. Good teaching let's the student draw conclusions... bad teaching forces conclusions down their throats. People are relatively nice and jovial! Especially Campus security! Nice guys over there and very helpful. I just wish that this college gave up trying to be a liberal progressive beacon and represented our state better. P.S how many people think that a gun free zone sign will keep out a potential school shooter? I certainly don't... I think that the schools political message is way to strong and drives away many potential students.

What I didn't expect to find was just how perfect this location was and how the seasons change the overall experience of walking along the beach trails. During late spring to early fall, charcoal grills are installed along the abundant picnic tables so the scent of grilled meats permeate the air and boast of good times. When the grills are removed for the rest of the "off-season", the crowds become much smaller and the sound of the ocean becomes the main soundtrack. But this time around, after missing several opportunities to witness how snow transforms Fort Foster, I finally had the chance to see the magic happen. Nothing could have prepared me for the sight of magical white blanketing this whole area in a peaceful glow. The clouds, the utter silence, and the cold but refreshing breeze that bites deep reminding you what it feels like to still be alive is a magic that cannot be replaced. I love it here and I finally can say that I've loved this place truly through all the seasons.

Fort Foster was commissioned in 1900 following the Spanish American War to protect the harbor underwater minefields. Originally, Battery Chapin was equipped with large mounted guns and a spotlight. The fort ceased operation after WWII and was left idle by the military. Local residents petitioned to turn the grounds into the park that stands today. The park has great views of two lighthouses and other historic structures in the bay and across the shore. There are plenty of picnic tables and a slightly dated playground for the kids. I was able to climb the aging stairs of the Battery Chapin and explore across the structure, but I had to be careful as there are no handrails and the stairs are narrow. The fort is interesting. There is plenty of parking during off season and there was no admission. (There may be admission during peak season, I couldn't tell). Portable potties are available in the parking lot. The park is a great place to bring kids, walk the dog or just have a peaceful afternoon. Lots of history and beauty to enjoy.
