First of all. The Store is amazing. All of the animals are extremely healthy. Secondly the animals. They have such a vast collection from reptiles, snakes and salt/fresh water animals. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, and extremely respectful and patient. We worked with Mike and ended up getting a scaleless corn and a gecko. The prices are by far the best I have seen on the east coast. 15/10 would recommend to anyone read more

More people need to know about this exotic pet store here in Pittsburgh. What an absolutely awesome place. We came in to get some fish for our tank and we were immediately greeted and helped. I had my two kids, husband and my parents with us. They took us all around the store showing all the different animals and then let my kids hold various ones. My 5 year old was in heaven. The care and attention we were given was unlike anywhere we have been. We left with 9 fish and incredible memories. All animals and fish were healthy and well cared for. George is so knowledgeable, it's absolutely mind blowing. We went in and he took the time to walk around with my niece teaching her about all of the different reptiles, fish, etc. she was fascinated, which is difficult to do to a 12 year old tween. Comparing this privately owned pet store to others in the area, there really is no comparison. I've been an aquarist for a half decade and purchased fish from all of the 'burghs privately owned fish stores, all with their own cult following and rave reviews. Off The Hook is the pet store I consistently have the LEAST issues with over the years. The fish tanks, unlike other stores, are isolated from each other, without pumping into a central sump system. This helps isolate any disease / illness from the other tanks if they get sick fish from their suppliers - which can and will happen with any fish store. The tanks are cleaned very regularly, and the fish are always presented healthy - unlike the big box stores what disease runs rampant. The store is family owned, the owners are not only very knowledgeable, but educated in the field as well. It is true, at times, their children do tend to the store. In taking with them, they have always been able to answer my questions confidentially. They are definitely much more knowledgeable than the staff at the big box stores. Bottom line. They know their stuff and love their animals. read more

Reptiles scare the heck out of me but fascinate me so when I heard of a new reptile shop in Ambridge I had to go check it out. This is a family owned business. The husband is a reptile rescuer. They had a large variety of reptiles, birds, fish, even spiders...eek! It did not have that funny smell like some pet shops or reptile shops have. Seemed very well maintained and taken care of. I would never purchase anything myself but if I knew anyone that was in the market for these types of creatures I'd definitely recommend checking this shop out. read more

They sold me an overpriced snake infested with MITES. They refunded me for the poison (PAM) they recommended I use on BOTH of my snakes but refused to take any accountability for the PAM causing my other snake (cornsnake) to display neurological damage. They offered no further refund for the $75 call to poison control or the $98 vet bill. I do not recommend this place to anyone because the woman is rude and they obviously don't see their animals as anything other than a dollar sign. They don't seem to mind screwing anyone over if it means not having to PROPERLY CARE for their animals. I suggest you look elsewhere for your new addition to your family. Amazing exotic space with some fabulous display creatures you don't see most places. Vipers, rattlers and a caiman as well as the more regular fish and lizards popular as pets. Definitely worth a stop for browsing alone but their prices are super fair and have a good selection of supplies as well. read more

My husband and I have been customers of Off The Hook since they were in Coraopolis. They specialize in birds, reptiles, and fish. Their new location is so much nicer in terms of space and presentation! Parking is a challenge, since it is on street metered. The owners became good friends of ours through our interactions and love of exotic animals. Desiree and George are so knowledgeable about the animals they help that we have learned far more from them than we could have reading through the overwhelming amount of resources on exotic pet care. We've purchased our fair share of pets and supplies through them. They helped us rehome a lovely bird who just wasn't happy as part of our flock, and we couldn't be more excited for her! This is truly a wonderful place to adopt rescue/rehome animals and learn how to properly care for them. read more

I am changing my previous review from 5 stars to 1. They gave me good deals in setting up my first saltwater tank but they neglected in inform me of a lot of NEED TO KNOW things about the corals and fish they were selling me. Off the Hook Exotic Pets set my tank up for failure. They sold me a fish that ate about $300 worth of coral and did nothing about it besides give me a soft coral worth $40. I told them a lot of things were going wrong in my tank and they did not put forth any effort to help. After spending $2000 in their store and being loyal to their store only and buying everything from them, they were not loyal to me. I got Oddball Pets and another privately owned company to come in and look at my tanks. They informed me of a lot of things Off the Hook Exotic Pets did wrong. As this was my first saltwater tank i did not know i was supposed to be feeding the corals, removing chlorine from the water, and they sold me a filter that is only good for 20-30 gallons when my tank is 55 gal. All George kept saying was that he was an "expert" and knew what he was doing, but all he was doing was taking advantage of someone who works for a small non-profit who wanted to set up the tanks to educate the kids in the house about saltwater life. They have great reviews so they may be a good store, just keep an eye on your wallet and research everything they tell you to do for saltwater before you make a decision. I am still waiting to see if Off the Hook Exotic Pets is going to do anything about how they screwed me over. read more

I'm so glad a store that's this high quality is within driving distance to me. I worked in an exotic pet store for four years, so I have very high standards when it comes to animal care and displays in stores. The reptile enclosures are all clean and well planted and decorated where appropriate, and their breeding racks are all clean and organized. The owner was friendly and obviously knowledgeable. I'll definitely be back many times to pick up food, bedding, and maybe even some more animals. read more

The BEST pet store I've ever been to. It's an amazing place. They have birds that are on perches around the stores that sometimes interact with customers but LOVE the staff. You can tell the staff works a lot with the animals to get them comfortable with people. A lot of the animals there are rescues and you can tell they try very hard to give these animals the best lives. If you're looking for anything bird related, definitely check these guys out first. I go there for the reptiles but the whole experience is just one of a kind. read more

Well let's start with there husbandry is terrible. I've now gotten a water monitor from them which died due to parisites I owned it maybe a week before it died. And so after that they gave me a snake free which I thought was awesome until I noticed today 3 days later the snake has a respritory infection "can be deadly if not treated" and mites. This store is horrible I do not recommend anyone go in even just to ask directions. read more

Just visited and their animal husbandry is terrible. Fish are way over stocked in tanks and 10 finches were shoved into a cage I would put maybe 3 in. Further back you'll find the reptiles and it's just all sorts of wrong. The veiled chameleon was thin and looked to be on the brink of death, the bearded dragons were on mulch substrate with no uvb lighting and in 20 gallon tanks when it was clearly time to bump them up to 40 gallons, and upon further inspection we found boas, ball pythons and a Chinese water dragon in Tupperware containers with no heat sources on a shelf without lids that anyone could have just taken. When we asked the teenage employees questions they were extremely lacking in knowledge. I wouldn't recommend you buy any animal from here, having experience in the animal industry as well there are better and more knowledgeable places. read more

Buyers beware. This shop does not inspect the reptiles that they bring in nor do they care who they are collecting them from. They simply resell them to make a fast buck and do not care whether or not the animal is healthy. I purchased a ball python about a year ago from them. Two weeks later it was smearing saliva all over the tank so I took it to the vet. The vet informed me that the snake had this RI for some time, and it should have been evident to the store. I then contacted the store and informed them that they sold a sick snake and told them that I had no intention of returning it to be resold to someone else or stuck in a freezer. In the two weeks that I had it and was unaware of the infection, it spread to my other snakes in quarantine. Last week after a year of back and forth to the vet and thousands of dollars later, I had no choice but to put my precious baby to sleep. Today, I have to put the 4 others he infected to sleep. Reputable pet stores would hold the reptiles in quarantine long enough to determine if the animal is sick. This one does not. Buyers beware. This store will cost you a whole lot more than the purchase price of the animal you are thinking about buying. read more

on the upside their prices are competitive and he is very knowledgeable about reptiles and salt water. The downside, I would never trade, sell, or leave, anything pet his care. I cant tell you how many times something has supposedly escaped its cage, died, or he just wasn't sure what happened to it. It was even more odd when i would see my animals in the enclosures which displayed their merchandise for sale. I personally wont do business there again due to my personal belief that I don't do business with dishonest people. Hopefully my post will help people be more vigilant in their dealings with them. read more
