Used to go here for fish all the time. They would live many years. I recently went there to buy more fish. I bought a pleco, red tail shark, and 2 rainbow fish that were very expensive. The next day the shark and rainbows were dead. Went back and got half off for the same fish. 3 days in one of the rainbow fish had died. I didn't have time to go back and get another one. They said the shark and rainbows were highly compatible but the next 2 weeks the shark was constantly attacking the rainbow to the point I think it go so stressed it finally passed. Most likely will not go here to buy fish anymore. $90 in rainbow fish gone. Such a shame being a beautiful fish. read more

Bought 2 gouramis from here and 2 days later one had ICH disease. Just called and the person working told me it's from stress from being transferred to a new tank - which is wrong. Stress can weaken their immune system and make them more susceptible, but this is caused from a parasite from an infected fish. My tank was doing so well and the second I introduced this new fish, I have to worry about this disease. They did not take responsibility for selling me a sick fish. My fiancé and I stopped by Elmer's this weekend to get more information on setting up our first freshwater fish tank. The girl we worked with had the name Maria embroidered on her shirt so I'm guessing that was her name. She was incredibly helpful and gave us tons of info on what products we would need. I appreciated that she didn't push anything on us and even suggested that we buy parts of the setup in batches to make it more affordable. We ended up purchasing the 20 gallon Master Kit because it was truly the best set up that we could find and gave us everything we needed to get started. Even though it was more money than we had planned on investing, I know we made the right decision because Maria took the time to explain all the pieces to us and even put together the filter before we left. When we were done shopping a nice gentleman carried everything to our car for us. My husband is definitely obsessed with Elmer's, as we go there very often. I bought an aquarium for him a few years ago, and he always wants to go to Elmer's to get fish or supplies. They have a great selection and great prices. It's also nice to get coupons from the loyalty program that they have. The only reason that I give them 4 instead of 5 stars is because we seem to get different answers from different staff members - so I'd recommend doing your own research to back up what the staff is telling you. read more

I had no idea that they accept pets inside of a fish store. I seen a lady in there with her cat one day and decided...hey why not bring my puppy with me. So me and Bella too a trip to store. Bella of course is the name of my pretty puppy. The store is full of all the fish and aquarium supplies you'd need for an average aquarium. By average i mean nothing above 220 gallons. I purchased a little 10 gallon tank because they were on sale for $10. I was originally going to use it as a fish hospital/nursery/separator. I wanted a small tank to help to heal some fish that get sick or to separate the dad from the baby fish who were just born. After viewing some of the fish in the tanks i decided to make this tank my own personal one. Some of the people who work there are really knowledgable. You got to speak to one of the older folks if you really need help. The older guy with the long pony tail is very knowledgable about each of the fish they housed and the differences in water. An older woman whose name skips my mind was a lot of help as well. She spent a whole hour discussing the up and down of owning a saltwater tank over a freshwater tank. I ended up choosing the freshwater tank because they are easier to manage when they are small. They have loads of tanks each fish species swimming with its own king typically. Alot of african cichlids but lot of other species that i've never heard of. They have about 4 to 5 aisles of fish, half fresh water, half salt water. Tons of accessories rocks, coral reefs, sand, real and fake greenery as well as colorful plants. They also have larger rocks, smooth stone and drift wood to add an authentic feel to your tank. They have shelves full of different varities of fish food from frozen blood worms and krill to floating pellets and flakes. I love the assortment. I ended up buying a hood/light combo, filter and heater for $90 and all the decorations cost about $50. I have yet to buy the fish so for $150 you can get everything you need for your 10 gallon tank. I used my own water and conditioned it but this store does sell fresh and saltwater by the gallon. Other than fish the store also has turtles, snails and eels as well as rabbits! My hubby loves this store and we shop there at least two times a month which is always fun to see the new fish they have in stock as well as specials. The had a sale $10 a cichlid last time i was there. The cichlids can be carnivorous and eat each other so for my tank i'm deciding to go with smaller fish that are friendlier. Elmer's sold me a sick fish that completely wiped out my entire tank! Roughly 10 fish. I had 2 HUGE and expensive clown loaches for 10 years and they were dead within a day. me and my family have gotten many fish at elmers. Most of them are currently happy and healthy, but some were of poor quality. I have a 55 gallon angelfish community tank at home and I decided to get the angels at elmers. I got 4 angelfish, 2 locally raised joy angels, and 2 locally raised black angels. I was looking for much better angels with much nicer colors and patterns, but the koi and black were all that they had. Within hours they all died. Everything was done correctly, just the same as I had done with dozens of fish before. Water parameters were perfect and conditions were all good. Elmers was originally an oasis to me. There are not enough saltwater live fish stores around; however, after my first trip there will never be another. The sold me a red fromia starfish unacclimated to their store as well as a fire tail blenny and two corals. The starfish seemed fine for two or three days...mind you I am extremely conscious of my tank perimeters...on day four the star began canibilizng itself. This caused a chain reaction of death that resulted in all the purchases from elmers dying. Funny thing is all my other tank inhabitants purchased from other various stores survived miraculously i did lose a hammer coral and brittle star. All in all their fish are crap go elsewhere. read more

Was at elmers for my second time today bought a few items for an upcoming saltwater marine tank. talked to one associate there who seemed very knowledgeable about setup for a new tank and helped me gear me towards better options. Not sure of his name a young kid with gaged ears talked to me about setups he has personally tired that he had trouble with and offered helpful tips. Will definitely be going back only reason for not five stars no one asked if we needed help at first and wasn't sure who to ask for help. And while this was going on our existing healthy fish (which came from Wet Pets) started getting sick w/ Ich! All due to introducing these sick fish from Elmers into our tank Originally we wanted to go to Elmers because of the variety and slightly lower prices. But no more!!! By far the worst place I have been regarding aquatics supplies. They have a lavish assortment to meet all of your needs, if anyone would ever help you. I had two employees make eye contact after standing around for ten minutes and then one just went to the front of the store and continued to ignore multiple customers as her tasks assigned must be more important. I am disgusted at customer service here and I do not plan on returning. I am a charge nurse for multiple local hospitals and I know what customer service is, and by no means are the employees even coming near an average rating. Complete disappointment and guess we will find another supply store. read more

Best customer service around! They tend to recognize regulars and make sure you know what you're bringing home. They will also patiently chase down that one specific fish you want in that tank full (I wanted a particular flowerhorn yrs ago). I had a bad experience at petsmart many years ago and the associates were acting very condescending towards me like I didn't know what I was buying...then I told them the size and quantity of my tanks. At elmers, on the other hand, they ask what size tank and filtration you have to ensure the capability of keeping the fish. They also know my stock and will steer me clear if the fish is clearly too aggressive for my tanks. Keep up the great work!! read more

My wife and I went to elmers to purchase a lamp for our ponds tetra pressure filter. We had the old lamp which has four prongs on it. We purchased the filter a year ago at elmers for approx $400. We were told the lamp with four prongs does not exist any more and they would give us a 10 percent credit on another unit with the new lamp style. We left and ordered the part on line. They are so kind to my 5 and 7 year old boys who pick their freshwater fish here, and the staff actually take time ti teach them about compatability.
