Deciding which training to take our 8 month old french bulldog was a little overwhelming. He was being a pain. Biting all the time, potty training was a struggle, jumping whenever he wanted something, we pretty much had enough. We gave Erika a call and we got our date for the 2 week board and train. During the training James updated us with videos and progress of how he was doing. I can honestly say Kai is a complete different dog. No biting. Knows all of the commands and rarely walk him on the leash even with other dogs around. We are absolutely satisfied with the work James put into training Kai. We have tried Petco and Petsmart with not so great results. I found Hawaii off leash on line and signed up. I met with Erica McRell and started our first training session , They use a training collar (not a shock collar) Its more like a TENS unit, it uses muscle stimulation. Mele' my 8 month old pup loves the collar, She actually comes running to get it on . She knows that when its on we go train, Erica is so experienced , patient and firm. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to train my pup , I knew she could Mele was smart enough to do it but wasn't confident in my self. Erica was encouraging and made herself available through phone and text if I needed her . Which i did. If I was stumped or Mele did something or reacted in a way that I hadn't seen I would text Erica and she was quick with an answer. In such a short time Mele has learned to come, sit , down , place , touch , food refusal , and to greet people only when I relate her to. I'm so pleased with her progress and would recommend this program to anyone who wants a well mannered obedient happy dog. read more

I always get compliments on how well trained my 1 year old husky is! She started lessons as soon as she was old enough and is a model dog. With the E-trainer collar I can let my pup off leash wherever we go (as long as it's allowed, sometimes even where it isn't). I utilized more than one of the trainers and they were all great and played with my pup and gave her loves like theynwould their own. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Our 1 year old German Shepherd is currently in the 2 week board and train with Deanna as her trainer. We get a few videos and pictures daily and so far we can tell she is learning so much! I am so happy with everything she is learning and how well Deanna has been with her. I can tell through the videos our dog loves her so much already! I had a great time with the training. We did the personal weekly training sessions with my dog, and I learned a lot about what made her tick and what we needed to work on. Unfortunately there were no 2 week boardings available at the time, and we moved before they had openings. 20/20 hindsight, I would have spent the extra money to have the 2 week board and train sooner. Off leash k9 Training Hawaii made all the difference in our family. We adopted our Thai Ridgeback mix Koa and found him to be more than a bit unruly! After some research and a call to Spencer, we were signed up for the Board and Train program. The results couldn't be more astounding! Erica was our trainer and gave me almost daily texts, calls, or videos showing Koa's progress. We felt included and up to date during the entire process. Koa went from pretty much doing whatever he wanted, to listening to commands consistently. It was also nice to get first hand training from Erica before we took him home. My dog Theo is an American Bulldog mix. At eight months old, he is the sweetest pup- but he is STRONG. With my husband deployed and two small kids, walking him became impossible because of how hard he would pull. It wasn't fair for him or for us. I was desperate for change. Amie took him on for the 2 week board and train program. I was nervous about it at first. But we received constant updates and videos, and I knew he was in good hands. We just picked him up yesterday, and the progress is amazing! This morning we took him on his first long walk with the family. I live on a military base, and every morning at 8 am we have to stop for the national anthem. Theo not only walked by my side with NO pulling, but he SAT for the entire national anthem! We brought are dog to the basic training course which was four 1 hour sessions and they give you a collar devise. My dog is listening better with the collar but I do not feel like the training was worth the money. I could have paid 1/5 Th the cost and just bought the collar and worked with him myself. The trainer was nice but I just don't think the basic course was worth it. Maybe if we would have paid more money and did the 2 week boarding but either way not terribly happy with the what we got for our money. read more

This company has started up on Kahuhipa street. The dogs are "Trained" on the sidewalk in front of my condo. I have watched the trainers for 6 months now. There are two types of training. Reward and punishment. The method that this company uses is purely punishment from my observations. Their "training collars" are designed to cause the dogs pain when the dogs pull for instance. The thinking is the dogs will learn not to pull because it will be painful. The dogs learn but become nervouse and full of anxiety. This is what I have seen. You can get the exact same results training a dog not to pull using reward. The dogs are relaxed and enjoy pleasing the trainer. I am so upset by what I have seen this company do to their dogs. I heard one dog recently yelp in pain three time in a span of about one minutes. Please people do your research this training method is outdated and in my opinion cruel. read more

Our trainer, Erica was wonderful. She is kind, yet firm. Our dog is 100% better behaved and more responsive to commands. He appears happier, is eating more than ever, and looks forward to working on the commands he was taught by Erica. Because of the training, our dog now has more freedom and is getting more exercise. We wish we would have found OLK9 sooner! It was impossible for us to walk our lab anywhere, he would drag us down the street, freak out in excitement at the sight of anyone (dog, human). It was impossible to really take him anywhere, he would jump, and flail all around because he loves everyone and everything. Being off leash? Forget about it...he would take off and would not listen to come back. Now after his 2 week board and train, he is off leash at our house ( yard not fenced ) and he knows his boundaries and stays within them! We go on daily walks and he stays at heel the whole time, and does not pull me in the slightest! We go to the beach very frequently, so now we take him to, and he is off leash the whole time!! :) The only negative part we have, is he still looses his mind if someone pets him. He will do great when people walk by him, run by him, walk dogs by him, but if they want to pet him, he gets all sort of excited. It is still a work in progress, using the tips from our trainer, but i really wish this could of been something that was incorporated in his training. The distractions are great, but once someone wants to pet him, he reverts back. Not everyone wants a big lab jumping all over them when all they want to do is pet him. Other than that, i could not be more happy and he is so much happier now to, that he can go all sorts of places with us, and live his best off leash life! read more

I chose the 2 week board & train program. Spencer was great! I have a 6 month old husky/malamute mix. Initially was very nervous leaving him for that long and going off island as well. But I got plenty of photos and videos each day, updating me on all his progress. Quickly realized he was being well cared for and having a great time. I'm very happy with all his progress. Kali is our one and a half year old German Shephard. I have always loved dogs and having a German Shephard had always been a dream of mine even after 20years of rescuing and owning different breeds. We got her at 4 months old from previous owners who impulsively bought her as an 8 week old puppy for their 2yr old. Unfortunately they kept Kali mostly in a kennel during the short two months they had her which was a critical socialization phase of puppyhood. The young family quickly realized they really had no time in their schedule for Kali's very playful, sweet, intelligent and sensitive soul. Due to her previous experience without proper socialization she became a nervous puppy. Being around our other dogs was a lot of fun for her since she was still a puppy but she lacked confidence due to leaving her litter mates too young and very little socialization With other dogs besides ours. We took her to other good canine citizenship training for socialization at 6 months old but she failed due to her fear of other dogs. We were told she would likely always be dog aggressive and never be able to be around other dogs, but we knew that was simply not true since she was okay with a couple of our other dogs at home. It was very heartbreaking, but we refused to give her up or give up on her. We wanted the confident loving dog we have always known her breed to be and started researching Trainers in Hawaii. Having both been prior military ourselves we were hoping to find fellow military veteran K9 trainers with whom we could entrust our beloved Kali to for the best training possible. We were very happy to find Off Leash K9 Training Hawaii and even more excited that a fellow Air Force Veteran female Bronze Star recipient military K9 trainer and German Shephard lover Erica McRell would be available in a couple of months to personally train our German Shephard Kali. We were apprehensive about the shock collar, but it was not any more painful than the TENS electrical stimulation therapy unit I use for pain for myself, so that greatly put me at ease about it. Erica has been a God-send! She asked if she could take Kali home from the very first day and we absolutely said Yes! We wanted Kali to feel at home no matter where she went so it wouldn't feel like she was just being boarded and trained. Kali felt so comfortable with Erica that she even took her toys and raw hide on Erica's bed which we thought was cute when we saw the photo. We were glad she felt that comfortable with Erica to share her stuff especially since she was away from the rest of her pack. Erica was great at keeping us up to date with daily texts, photos and videos of Kali's training. She took Kali to Kailua beach for training and swimming there like we asked because we wanted Kali to also have fun. Since Kali came home we have noticed her be more confident, calm, observant, obedient on command, patient, playful and she barks a lot less. Having Off Leash K9 Training in Hawaii with Erica as one of the lead trainers is the best thing to happen to all of Hawaii's dogs and responsible dog owners! We Highly recommend them to anyone who wants a fellow dog lover to expertly train your dog! There are just some things that Erica's expertise in military K9 training cannot be learned elsewhere and we are blessed to have had her as our trainer and Kali's trainer. We wanted the best for Kali and certainly feel that Erica has been the best thing to happen to Kali and to us with excellent military type training within the short 2 week board and train session! We are very happy that we can call on her anytime we need refresher training or German Shephard specific advice! It was completely worth the time and money and we will do it all over again soon with Kali's best buddy Niko who is a half German Shephard/Golden Retriever mix and will be her life-long buddy. We cannot say enough great things about Erica and Off Leash Training! We have a husky that can be quite dramatic and stubborn. We could not take him on a walk without him being on a harness- he would pull and get distracted at the least little thing- making our walk very unpleasant. My experience with K9 Off Leash Training was absolutely spectacular and we are a huge success story! My Labradoodle Kai went in for the 2 week Off Leash training with Spencer, and came out an obedient, well managed dog. It did not affect his personality nor his energy level! He was always a very sweet and smart dog with an enormous amount of puppy energy, would was fine, but he was uncontrollable and I was at wits end. When I took him previously for his daily beach run, Kai would "misbehave" by stealing flip flops from other people, running off with water bottles, and disturbing people trying to sunbathe or relax. It was not okay, and as I say, he was not being "a good citizen". He thought and thinks everyone is here to pet him and play with him, which some people honestly don't really appreciate. Before the training, Kai was like "a hot air balloon" on a leash. I couldn't walk him without my arm being pulled out of it's socket. After the training, he is obedient and walks beside me without a leash nor any problems. He understands what is expected of him, and what I ask. If an issue arises, Spencer is a phone call away to help me deal with it, and also the training Kai has had is truly evident and easy for me to maintain. I highly recommend this to anyone with a puppy or just has issues with their dog. I worked with Deanna, and her love for what she does shines through each day I am with my little guy, Dallas. Deanna, stayed in contact with me from the time I dropped Dallas off, and she has maintained contact after our return meeting. She walked me through everything, and took the time to send me videos and pictures of Dallas through his journey of becoming self confident and obedient. He doesn't bark at everything that moves now, he doesn't destroy my baseball caps, which I love!!! I can actually leave my front door open to bring in my groceries and not worry if he will run out. My husband and I are so incredibly grateful for Erica and OLK9 Hawaii. Before training, we felt like we were depriving our lab retriever of the attention he deserved because he was so hard to control. Outside he'd bark at people and drag us towards other dogs. Inside of the house he'd grab socks and shoes and play keep away out of boredom and lack of exercise. Because it was so difficult to walk him, we'd have to cut his walks short. It was an endless cycle of him acting out due to lack of exercise and us not being able to fully exercise him due to his misbehavior. Since he's come back from the two week board and train program with Erica, we've been able to take him on much longer walks. On top of that we can have him do sprints up and down our street when practicing his distance downs off leash. We've taken him to the beach, on hikes, inside dog-friendly stores as we run our errands, and to sit with us outside of coffee shops as we do work. We always wanted to give him a great life and now we can. He still has the same personality, but now he understands his boundaries. Our bond with him has grown exponentially because of the time and attention we can now give him. I also want to add that when they say they have a lifetime guarantee with the two week board & train, they're not joking. Since we've gotten our pup back, we realized very quickly that we needed to go through training too. While the trainers have your dogs for 2 weeks and weed out the issues they encounter, you are going to be with your dog for his/her life and will come across new things that may trigger new issues with your pup. We've been able to meet up with Erica multiple times to ask questions about what we can do better and how we can handle these situations. I'm always able to text her questions and pick her brain. My dog Beau has always been a happy guy and pretty well behaved but had no recall when off-leash. This was a pretty big safety concern for me in case he were to ever get out. I also knew he would be even happier off-leash. Off Leash K9 did an amazing job with Beau! I had seen the YouTube videos of other dogs but was amazed to see the transformation in my own. He is so much happier and even better behaved than before. I love taking him to the park to run and play off-leash feeling confident that he is safe and has a strong recall.
