We are first time dog owners, and picked a somewhat difficult breed as our first pup, the Alaskan Klee Kai aka mini husky. So many of spitz breed characteristics in a smedium body. We knew we needed help so our girl has had a lot of training, I mean a LOT. On the mainland, we had her enrolled in puppy socialization classes (covid dog) from the get go, and board & train at 6 months for basic obedience. Her first trainer told us she was "feral." We went through the gamut of trainers from hard-nosed strict obedience-focused to purely positive reinforcement only trainers. They all worked to some degree but nothing really hit the sweet spot. Enter Deanna from HDTS- she really understands dogs and works with the natural tendencies of the animal, while still expecting (and getting!) obedience and manners. She might not be the trainer for every human, but she is 100% the trainer for every dog. You can just tell the dogs all love her, she is like magic to them. My dog never liked any of her trainers before, and she's a good judge of character! My girl made a huge leap in her development, and I can honestly say Deanna has changed our lives by working with Maple. I can trust Maple off-leash in some settings giving her the freedom to just be a dog, which she repays with love and never-ending kisses. I trust Deanna with my dog daughter implicitly, and would literally never board her anywhere else. Maple loves her too :)

After using two trainers before finding deanna, I am eternally grateful for Hawai'i Dog training services. Deanna shifted the entire dynamic of my house. I'm someone who was willing to rescue and rehabilitate dogs at whatever cost, and Deanna saw and admired that in me, even if I am a "glutton for punishment" lol. She taught not only my three dogs, but me so much and offered more than I could've ever paid her for! I had a trainer tell me my dogs genetics were going to "haunt me for the rest of my life" and Deanna (who also has mutts) didn't care about the shape, size, or behavior. She took them for who they were and made them the best that they could be (which they're pretty dang awesome if you ask me). We owe deanna our entire life plus some. Nalo, Eva, and Remii gained an Auntie - and the Hensons gained a friend!

Our family can't thank Deanna enough! Shortly after adopting our 2 year old "German Shepherd mix" (DNA test said she is also largely mixed with Malinois and Airedale Terriror), we reached out to Deanna for help with leash pulling, excessive barking, general anxiety/reactivity, and basic obedience/boundary setting. We ended up doing 5 private sessions with her. The first thing my husband and I loved about Deanna was her wealth of knowledge and the resources she continuously provided us. It really changed the way we view dog ownership. Now when I see posts on social media about dog owners that say "don't worry, my dog is friendly", I think "omg that used to be me!" Deanna took so much time to listen to us, learn about our daily schedule, and understand the goals we have for our dog and family. I've seen some older reviews complain about her first session being "mostly talking", but we felt like that was an invaluable part of the process that helped her provide us with the best guidance and set expectations so that we were all on the same page moving forward. As for the actual training, we saw improvements in our dog after the first session and continued improvement after each one. We typically focused on one or two behaviors at a time and built more skills (for both our dog and ourselves) with each session. I won't say our dog is now perfect, because of course we still have things to improve (always will). But we now take our dog for enjoyable walks, have guests over or go to the park without excessive barking, and our dog is able to self-soothe and settle down on her own. Importantly, we also learned how to have our 2 year old daughter and dog interact safely. I think the biggest factor in our success is that we now have the skills and confidence to teach our dog what we expect of her and also better understand what she is communicating to us. With the hectic holidays coming up, we are so thankful to have worked with Deanna and look forward to enjoying our Christmas with our two 2 year olds (human and doggo). I would highly recommend Deanna and wouldn't be surprised if we reached back out to her when we are ready to "up our skills" some more. Thank you Deanna!

Deanna came into our lives shortly after we adopted our boy Bubba. He started with puppy obedience and, with one week in between, then headed to her Board & Train. We enjoy our off-leash adventures every chance we get. We get to take our boy to all the pet-friendly places, and he's the goodest boy. And ADVOCATE for him. The confidence and education we have gained as owners is something we will hold near and dear to our hearts. Not only that, we gained an entire community of friends! 3 years later and we are great friends. She's always there at the drop of a hat whenever we have questions, concerns or sharing wins! It doesn't get better than that. On top of that, I grew a love for pet care and training. I now have my own business taking care of all the pups and kitties, and I would not have been able to if it wasn't for Denna! You will not regret it!

To say Deanna changed our lives through training our dog (Karl - Golden Retriever) is an absolute understatement. There have been maybe a handful of times in my life that I've been absolutely blown away by the quality of work someone provided, and Deanna is easily the top of that list.  For me personally, I was, without a doubt, a skeptic when it came to dog training in general. I was constantly saying, "We can do this on our own. It can't be that hard. It's not worth the money" towards everything that we looked at. It wasn't until my wife found Deanna that we decided to take a chance...and I honestly couldn't imagine what our life would like if we hadn't.  To cut to the point, in about three weeks, Karl went from an absolute velociraptor, jumping on everyone, biting everything, to a well behaved young pup sitting at a dinner table with the family like he'd been doing it his whole life.  What is more remarkable is Deanna's understanding of who Karl is at a level that allowed the training to occur, but in a way that was uniquely "Karl." Case in point, Karl would return when called but instead of sitting facing you like most dogs, he would sit between your legs facing out and then look up/backwards at you, tongue out, just happy to be there.  Deanna takes the training a step further and also taught us how to communicate with Karl in a way that he understood. In these sessions, we learned that a lot of preconceived notions we had towards dog training weren't entirely accurate, and the effectiveness of changing the communication methods were astounding.  All this to say, when you work with Deanna, you are meeting a friend for life. Unfortunately, we had to leave Hawaii a few years ago, but she has kept in contact with us ever since, and quite frankly, I'd fly back just to have my dog trained by Deanna.

Miss Cleo, Miss Pebbles, and Miss Marley

We have three dogs and have stumbled into a wonderful series of experiences with Hawaii Dog Training Services (HDTS). The trainers are knowledgeable and focus on practical methods that deliver results. Our first encounter was roughly two years ago during a multi-week series focused on leash training. We discovered a set of skills we needed and were able to practice with Miss Marley (Pomsky/Dog #1). During this series we met the business owner Deanna. Deanna's direct approach focused on what truly works gave us the confidence to reach out to her last year for a two-week board and train session for our newest dog Miss Cleo (Border Collie/Dog #2). The value and success of Deanna's board and train cannot be overstated. Miss Cleo's resulting obedience met every expectation and positioned us well to meet her capabilities in a follow-up series of human training one-on-ones. We estimate that our dog handling skills improved the most with time, repetition, and Deanna's coaching. The last experience with HDTS was earlier this year when I expressed to Deanna that we'd enjoy occasional pack walks which led to the beginning of e-collar training for Miss Cleo. While this is still an evolution in progress, Miss Cleo, Miss Marley, and Miss Pebbles (Italian Greyhound, Chihuahua mix/Dog #3) seem to enjoy pack walks. If you're looking for a dog training company that cuts through the fluff and gets straight to effective training. HDTS is highly recommended!

I am SO thankful for Deanna. I can't even begin to explain all of the things I learned (and am continuing to learn) as a dog owner. Deanna is so knowledgeable and does not gatekeep any information. I truly feel like she only wants the best for her clients! We did about 6 private sessions with Deanna, followed by a 3-week board and train. I feel like Deanna wants her clients to know that in addition to dogs learning, their owners have to be willing to be uncomfortable and also learn new things. Instead of assuming Deanna was going to "fix" all of our problems, she gave us a TON of information on how to change our mindset as dog owners, and also taught us how to reinforce what Archie learned in his 3-week board and train. During Archie's board and train, we received multiple videos per day and knew Archie was being cared for and taught very well. Archie got to go to the beach, on long walks, to run errands, and make doggy & human friends. Reading all these negative reviews was really disheartening. No one has cared so much about us and our dog, except Deanna. She always responds to our texts, even months/years after our boarding sessions. She is the reason my dog is able to enjoy freedom off-leash is because Deanna taught US, as dog owners, so well. People have to realize that Deanna can train your dog all you want, but, if you, as dog parents, aren't willing to train YOURSELVES, you won't get anywhere. Also, if you're closed off to prong collars, e-collars, or whatever else she uses as certain tools, open your mind! Allow her some time to explain how and why she uses these tools! I built such an amazing relationship with my dog by changing my own thinking and expectations, and putting in the effort day in and day out. All in all, we love Deanna! Archie loves going back to his Aunty Deanna for boarding. I recommend HDTS to everyone I know!

Gigi is on the left. After our dog training, Gigi can now go on doggy play dates with our neighbor doggy Moki (on right)

I hired Deanna when I was worried that my new puppy named Gigi (8 months old) was going to bite my neighbors toddlers. It was the first time I've ever had an aggressive dog. All my previous dogs were so chill. Never crated. Never had to discipline. I worked with Deanna for 10 weeks doing in person sessions. I learned so much including realizing that Gigi was looking for me to lead, but I didn't know how to. I coddled her instead of giving firm correction when necessary and positive reinforcement for good behavior. My go to response was "it's ok Gigi. Don't worry." I babied her as I did my previous dogs. But that is exactly what this dog did not need. Gigi is a radically different dog now from then. My neighbors all have seen a huge improvement and asked what I did. Hiring Deanna was the best investment I made for my family and for Gigi. Gigi now sits, stays, walks on heel, and with techniques Deanna taught me, my walks with Gigi and her interaction with others and their dogs is now an enjoyable and stress free! I highly recommend Deanna for a no nonsense approach that creates long term worthwhile results.

Deanna and her staff is amazing. I first reached out to Hawaii Dog Training Services because our young Boxer pup was in need of training. During the 3 week board and train, she relearned some basic obedience and also curbed her reactiveness on walks. Throughout the boarding, Deanna sent updates with texts, pictures, and videos. Our dog went to the beach, the coffee house, hiking, romped and ran with other boarders. I like Deanna's no-nonsense approach, she tells it like it is and for owners sometimes, many times we are 99% the problem. It can be a hard pill to swallow for some but her priority is our dog and giving us the tools to have a better relationship with our fur babies. Since then we have used Hawaii Dog Training several other times while going on trips. There is tremendous peace of mind knowing that our dog is safe and we wouldn't board her anywhere else other than Hawaii Dog Training Services!

Deanna went paddle boarding with us for one of our lessons!

He was scared of pretty much everything -- people, new environments, being separated from us -- and we were also dealing with barking, basic obedience, and some unwanted behaviors. After just 4 sessions, the transformation has been unbelievable. Today was our final session, and I honestly wish I had a video of how Kona used to be so people could truly understand how far he's come. At the beginning, he wouldn't even go up to Kristi and was extremely hesitant and fearful whenever she took the leash. Now? We've also been working remotely with a Veterinary Behaviorist in San Francisco along with our local vet. Although we had not gotten her stabilized on medications, we started training right away. There were months of trying different medications and different doses, and our dog having bad side effects. We had Zoom sessions with Marie throughout this time and she was so helpful and supportive with giving us ideas and suggestions of what to try to get her from being in a frozen state of fear and building her trust and confidence. I just wanted my scared girl to stop hiding and be able to relax on the couch like she used to do. Marie has been so accommodating with our schedule (there were weeks I would postpone and reschedule due to our rescue girl not feeling well). Marie encouraged us to video our training and she would analyze the videos and she has taught me so much about our dogs body language. We have been working with Marie for about 4 months and have seen great improvement. She is off all behaviorial medications and rarely hides. She is much more tolerant of noises and is now eager and more engaged when we train. She is happier and more playful than she's ever been. We never would have gotten this far without Marie's guidance. She truly cares about her clients. She is so knowledgeable and is amazing at what she does. Thank you Marie for helping us build a better relationship with our sweet girl and helping her to gain more confidence!

Eric Sacks is currently under criminal investigation for dog abuse…read more Sometimes I wake up with nightmares because of the way Eric and his employees injured my dog. I sent my dog away for three weeks in January after assurances that he would be well taken care of. My dog was supposed to work on his separation anxiety and crying. Eric and his team cut and burned my dogs neck (see vet analysis) with a shock collar for three weeks, and didn't give him his medicine as instructed. He didn't take him to the vet after he hurt his neck, either. Furthermore, he refuses to give us a full refund, which shows that he cares more about money than the animals he is trusted with. I am posting this as informative information to others. The photos show my dog's neck after the veterinarian cleaned his wounds out. He was prescribed painkillers and antibiotics for two weeks. I wish I never sent my dog there. I wish I never trusted Eric. He should not be caring for animals. Update in response to Eric: Eric is a liar, and took advantage of my emotions when I was processing that my dog was hurt by him. He isn't even quoting the right amounts of money he owes me ($2,250.72), and is violating his confidentiality agreement with the mediation center. A business owner should refund all money to the owners, including vet costs. My dog's training did not improve, nor have I ever said that it did. He still cries from separation anxiety when he is alone. Eric's services did not do us any good and he is weak and incapable of owning up to his mistakes. Furthermore, I sent my dog to Eric with instructions for giving my dog medicine. Eric is clearly disorganized and neglectful of this. The veterinary bills show that there IS thermal damage. Anyone with a brain knows that thermal damage means burns. Get over yourself. I HAVE NOT CREATED ANY FAKE ACCOUNTS NOR ASKED ANYBODY TO LEAVE A BAD REVIEW. I only shared my own story on my own social media accounts. People do what they want on their own free will. Many people love my dog, and it is their constitutional right to free speech to vocalize their own perspectives on their own free will, especially about matters of public concern - including dog abuse. At Eric's request, I tried to settle our dispute privately, which is why I did not post in January. I wanted to, but gave this horrible trainer the benefit of the doubt in being a good business owner and handling this appropriately. Now I am sharing the truth. There is no slander. Only truth.
