My co-worker comes here often for lunch and I've been wanting to try them for awhile. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected. I always like to think that I didn't order the right item. Their menu is pretty limited. They have sandwiches, Tonkatsu plate, and some veggie noodles. The only thing that stood out was good service and lots of outside seating area to enjoy your food. They're located in 345 Queen Street on the ground floor of the building. I ordered Tonkatsu plate for $15. It came with a choice of brown or white rice, toss salad, and pink Tonkatsu sauce that was a light mixture of mayonnaise like a frosting texture. That was unique. This small unassuming shop on Queen street has owners that love and care about their business. Every morning they spend the time washing and cleaning their outdoor tables so lunchtime patrons can enjoy their food. They post their specials on instagram daily and the menu changes. So you know everything is fresh. The vegetarian soba noodles are my favorite. The noodles are cooked perfectly and pairs well with their seasoned sauce. The option includes a brown rice musubi which has a lot of flavor. The cold pumpkin and broccoli are perfect accompaniments and kinda a pseudo appetizer/dessert. Hidden gem in downtown! All the food I have tried here is delicious! It is definitely comfort food, and tastes like your grandma made it :). The menu rotates often but it is all Japanese-type Fusion food. My favorites are: crispy chicken with mushroom gravy over pasta, and crispy pork and mapo tofu (a little spicy though)... and best of all, they have the option of having white rice or brown! (The brown rice is cooked well and is not hard like some other places). The salad that accompanies the dishes is also fresh and has a delicious Asian-type dressing. Every day they have 2-3 different lunch specials, which are shown on their Instagram daily, and a regular menu of sandwiches and pastries. I got the Tonkatsu with Pink Sauce, one of the most popular plate lunches. Overall, the taste was above average and at a reasonable cost ($14). The pork was cooked well and still juicy with a crunchy panko coating. The brown rice was surprisingly moist and the salad had a good dressing. I personally didn't care for the pink sauce, which seems like a tartar sauce (Probably a play on a Japanese nanban sauce). I would rather just have more Tonkatsu Sauce. Only problems are that there is no parking besides street parking and it's a bit hard to find the restaurant. In a previous week I had the crispy pork and loved it. Today I had the crispy chicken w/ mushroom gravy. LOVED it! It's the same "crispy" as the crispy pork dish. Had it over penne pasta. Came here for lunch this past week with my coworker. OEC has a Facebook page that you need to check for updates on their entree menus. I think it changes every 1-2 days. I've been continuously checking their Facebook until finding this particular lunch entree I've always wanted to try which was Chicken Piccata with either rice or penne pasta. This dish looked unique, delicious, reasonably price ($9.50), and gotta be worth trying since it looks better than the Chicken Piccata I saw from other Italian restaurants in Honolulu downtown via yelp. So I must try it and brought my coworker to join me. When we entered the restaurant (locates next to HGEA), the place looks very clean and can see desserts, sandwiches, and more next to the cashier for sale. We didn't waste any time and both ordered the same dish. We wanted to order ASAP before the lunch rush and yes this place seems to be popular to the nearby offices for lunch. The chicken is truly 100% chicken breast dipped in a batter similar to Tempura. Crunchy enough, not soggy, but was tasty and garnished. The penne pasta was alright and the pasta sauce was good (not salty, seasoned well, light creamy taste). If I didn't need to add extra black pepper, salt, or red pepper, it meant the dish was flavorful, to me that is. The salad is just a salad, nothing special. I felt lunch was filling and would order this again if I felt like eating pasta for lunch again. My coworker also liked the food too. This place takes debit/credit cards but with a minimum. OEC is a little café on Queen Street in Downtown Honolulu with indoor and outdoor seating. Their menu is short but effective in covering meals for different palates. Each day, they have premade sandwiches and salads and have daily specials that always include a vegetarian/vegan option and a plate with meat and a starch. Most days the meatless option is the soba/cold spinach noodles that come with a dipping sauce of your choice and a side sushi and vegetable. The plate looks really simple but the taste definitely isn't. I think the sauce for the noodles definitely makes the meal. They usually rotate the meat option daily specials with pork tonkatsu and rice, chicken picatta over pasta, chicken curry over rice, etc. Their dessert's great and all freshly baked in their kitchen. Regular dessert items include muffins and cheesecake. Customer service is above average and that's been consistent. What's not consistent are their operating hours and food portions. I first discovered OEC one morning looking for a quick breakfast and found their muffins to be a nice simple option to start my mornings. They're no longer open for breakfast and have begun opening at 11 am for lunch. Not only have they shortened their operating hours, since they're a small business, it seems they're closed a lot not only on holidays but on random days during the week. This has been very disappointing on days where I'm set on eating there and get there and they're closed. Best thing would be to call ahead to make sure they're open. I docked another star because one of their specials was soup, salad and bread for $8. The soup came in a small container only ¾ full and the salad was gone in a couple of bites. I hadn't discovered how laughable the $8 "meal" was until I got to work and took everything out of the bag. My coworkers asked where my "real" lunch was and were surprised I had gotten the "snack" from OEC as the portions for their regular plates were pretty generous for around the same price or a dollar more. Overall, I'm really torn about the star-rating on this café because of the inconsistencies. This place is tucked away right next to downtown Honolulu and is very peaceful and not too busy. The menu appears to change each day and is comprised of "Vegan Cold Noodle" + whatever 3 things the cook decided to make that day. When I arrived, there was "Sold out" stickers on 2/4 of the items, but she explained that the "Clam Noodle" was not actually sold out and that one Clam Noodle remained. Obviously I am going to choose the menu item with only one left, so that nobody else gets it, so that's what I did. As I left, I heard the woman working tell a customer on the phone "we only have one left". Was she talking about the same item? Is there always 1 left of each item? Does anything ever really run out? Deep down I feel empty because I do not know. I got the "Clam noodle" for $9.30 and I assumed it would be noodles with some sort of clam sauce on top. When it arrived, I was surprised to learn that it is actually clam soup in a bowl, and then plain spaghetti noodles in a different container. While not exactly false advertising, It was still a suprise, but it ended up being pretty good. The meal aslo came with salad and a bread roll. My co-worker took me to this little hole in the wall off Queen Street for lunch today. It's hard to find even if you're looking for it as it is recessed and sub level. But from the line of people waiting, it's easy to see that it's a IYKYK kinda place. Owned by a Japanese couple, this take out place only serves a limited selection each day. Each day is a different menu of about 4 to 5 plates. They advertise their menu for the next day outside of their establishment every day. You can also follow them on Facebook for their daily menu. They aren't active on Instagram though. For my first time, I wavered between two items but finally chose their Thai Green Chicken Curry. It was served with rice (I chose brown) and green salad. When I got back to my office I was surprised at how much rice they provided. I was happy to see that it was quality short grain brown rice... yummers. The curry was placed into a styrofoam bowl which was nice so that I could save some for the needy day. The curry was surprisingly good for a Japanese Restaurant... had a nice heat to it. It was $9.50 which is about right for quality nowadays. Little nook cafe, tucked next to the HGEA building on Queen Street! If you need to do business with the city/state/fed offices and need a quick, decent bite for lunch..... OEC! I think it is family run and its so neatly down low and subtle.... They have a hot lunch item or two every day and two hot and two cold sandwich offerings too. You can eat right outside in the concrete jungle garden area or take it to go and eat on the Iolani Palace grounds. I had the katsu curry special and it was very tasty and the pork katsu was lean and a good portion. It is not a huge plate, but the quality is evident. It came with a side salad and two small potato French fry offerings. So Japanese! Go early - like before 1130am, the lines go out the door but moves fast around peak downtown lunchtime. I think everyone who works and eats in downtown has their own rotating list of go-tos, and although OEC Cafe is a little of a walk for me, OEC is definitely on my list of go-tos. I have to admit though- I'm lazy so it's toward the bottom of my go-tos haha. Specials are posted to their Facebook page usually the night before. As specials change regularly, I won't go into depth on those offerings. But OMG if you see menchi katsu on there, you have to go! Outside of Japan, they have the best menchi katsu in my opinion. Other than that, I've also tried and loved their linguine in clam sauce, green curry, chicken meatballs with pasta in creamy tomato sauce, and chicken tikka masala. If only they had mini portions. I'm always forcing myself to finish my food because it tastes so good...then I'm ready for a nap and am slightly less productive in my afternoon. The one special that is always on the menu is the vegan cold spinach noodles. It comes with kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) and either inari sushi or an onigiri (in the form of a roll) along with a dipping sauce. I believe there are two sauces to choose from but I highly recommend the sesame sauce. Until today, I would also always get the fruit iced tea, which is iced tea with blended fruits. It's not too sweet and refreshing. Sadly, I've been watching the price of this go up from $2 two years ago when I first started going to OEC Cafe to $4 today. And as of tomorrow, it will no longer be offered on the menu. As of today, prices have also gone up due to increasing rent costs. It's not too bad though. I noticed the spinach noodles were $9 today versus $8.80 last week. I would normally complain about paying $7.50 for a casual meal especially one that is meatless, but I felt like my $7.50 was well spent on today's vegetarian option which was the green soba with tofu and a small roll of sushi. The restaurant chefs are really nice, but I have to be honest that twice I ate here, the food is ok, but just average because there seems to be something missing in it, but I can't pinpoint what: Shoyu Ramen - 3 1/2 stars - serving was the same, but better than the miso ramen I ate the first time. If I want soup, esp tomato bisque, I'll go to Aloha Salads. If I want a bento, I'll go to Mamaya. When I want cold noodles, I'm going to OEC. Like most of my downtown lunch places, I heard about this place from a coworker. It's a small place that is easily missed. It's found nestled next to the Melin building, along Queen Street. It's about a block away from the main post office. You have to go down a short flight of steps to get to the door, so it's really hard to see just driving along Queen Street. There are signs that have dual purpose - one to find the place and the other is the post up the menu. OEC has a menu that consists of three main entrees. This menu changes weekly. If you follow them on Facebook, they will post the menu of the week on Sunday. Sometimes, they will have a special for that day that they will also announce on Facebook too. I've tried the cold noodles (both the spinach noodles and udon). They give the option of dipping sauce - soy sauce and sesame (goma) sauce. I absolutely love the sesame. It is a thicker sauce that really sticks to the cold noodles. The sauce is a little on the salty side, but it is a rich, creamy flavor that I have not tasted anywhere else. The cold noodles also come with two side dishes - kabocha (really soft, orange squash) and a mini-sushi roll made with their mixed rice. It is a very filling meal that is perfect for the hot, humid days of summer. The cold noodles are their vegetarian dish, so it is always one of the three entrees on their menu. I have also tried their chicken piccata. This dish is a good and cheap pasta in downtown. They use spaghetti noodles and top the noodles with at least three good size pieces of boneless chicken that has been cooked in a way that keeps the meat moist while having a nice crispy outside. The sauce is buttery, lemony, and a bit salty. The pasta also comes with a small salad and small scoop of macaroni salad. The employees are always very nice and courteous. read more
