I live about a block away and have walked by Nicky's Lunch Wagon so many times but had never eaten there...until this past Friday that is. I was walking home from a routine Dr checkup at the hospital and passed by the cute yellow lunch wagon, I was definitely hungry so got in line. It was shortly after they opened so there were maybe 5 people in front me and the orders got out quick. I ordered a combo plate with Vietnamese spicy fried chicken and the Country fried chicken with brown gravy...and for good measure also got a Teri-spam musubi. For the plate, I ordered it with Kalua fried rice and potato-mac salad and both chicken dishes were really good and extremely filling. The musubi was darn tasty as well. It's definitely a popular lunch spot for the downtown workers and residents. I was only a few people back when I got in line but by the time I left with my plate the line was 20+ strong. I placed a small catering order 3 weeks prior to a small Friendsgiving gathering by Instagram message and she confirmed she could do it. Now, 4 days prior to our gathering she messages me that she can't do it because the amount is too small. I was visiting the nearby 'Iolani Palace and decided to get lunch. I had the shōyu chicken with steamed rice and a green salad. The chicken was delicious and fall-off-the-bone tender and moist. This place always has a line but it moves super fast! She has everything ready to pack up quickly in a lunch plate so you don't have to wait for anything to cook! And yet the food tastes fresh and so delicious. Ran out of the spicy fried chicken so we got the mochiko chicken and she was nice enough to add the spicy sauce right on top. I decided to try Nicky's after starting a new job near her lunch wagon. Plate lunches everywhere have started to feel the same...expensive, bland, and only your choice of rice or mac. Gone are the days of $7 plate lunches loaded to capacity that a rubber band is needed to keep it closed. Moment of silence for those days Nestled between the Hawai'i Supreme Court and the post office is Nickey's bright yellow wagon with its red letters that reads "Nicky's". I got there at 11 the first thing I noticed was there was already a line. Do not be alarmed though as the line moved quickly. Nick has her system and was able to take orders, provide food, and accept payment in what I can best describe as the speedy system invented by the McDonald's brothers. While in line I looked over the menu and the second thing I noticed was the prices were reasonable. Third thing I noticed was you had multiple options regarding starch. Rice, fried rice, and noodles to name a few. In my mind Nicky's was already better than half the places around here. The fact that I had options was enough to give her at least 2 stars. Finally it was my turn to order. Taking my order was I assume Nicky. Maybe Nicky is a loved one or someone close to this young lady but regardless she was polite and took my order. I ordered fried chicken with noodles and Mac salad. There is no where to sit down in the immediate area because it's a food truck along the sidewalk. There are some areas to sit but you'll need to find one. After getting my food I went back to my office to enjoy my lunch. Moment of truth..I opened my plate and was immediately punched in the face by this beautiful aroma of fried food. I took a few seconds to allow this amazing scent to permeate my office. Finally I dug in. The fries noodles were amazing. It took me back to those days of buying plastic bag fried noodles for $1 from the manapua man. Oh the memories. I then want back and forth between my three choices. Noodles, fried chicken, mac, noodles, mac, fried chicken, as the three of them did this lovely waltz in my mouth. Her mac was a potato mac, creamier, and was not likely the mac being served every where now (you know what I mean if you're a PL aficionado). The fried chicken was good but nothing special. It was what it was...deep fried chicken. Perhaps I should have got one of the other types chicken on her menu. Cons: What I really didn't like was Nicky's food gave this unbelievable desire to sleep. After consuming it all I wanted to do was lay down and catch a few Z's. Perhaps next time I will not eat my entire plate in less than 10 minutes. I'll definitely be going back. If you're in the area you should check it out as it is one of the few remaining delicious plate lunches places in the area along with Irifune and Max & Lucy's. 4 stars for now but a few more visits to see if Nicky's deserves the elusive 5th star read more

There's something about bone in Shoyu chicken that gives more flavor than boneless chicken. I ordered a mini Shoyu chicken and noticed that it was bone-in chicken. I knew right away it was going to be the bomb! Nicky's Lunch Wagon parks on Mililani Street between the King Kamehameha statue and DCCA building. If you work near by, this lunch wagon is a must try. I am not sure what the hours are but you need to be an early bird because they do sell out most of items by 12:30pm. The regulars will buy everything. I did come after that time but I was able to get a mini Shoyu chicken. The server, who is very stylish by the way and very neat appearance, asked if I wanted to try little bit of papaya chicken since there wasn't enough Shoyu chicken. That worked out perfectly because I got try two items. Papaya chicken reminded me of chicken long rice dish and it was good. I really liked their Shoyu chicken, the local comfort food. It was made perfectly. $8 for a mini plate is totally affordable. It came with some toss green salad and one scoop of rice. I think you can get fried noodles but like I mentioned, you have to come early. Finally, I am not too big of a lunch wagon fan but this lunch wagon is an exception just because the server lady is super sweet and nice. She runs a very neat and tidy truck. Not bad. Still one of the most decent priced plate lunch wagons near the office. Food portion and quality is usually good but had slightly dropped today for me. For instance, the boneless Kalbi I had today was slightly hard/chewy (used to be very soft and tender), smaller portion, and priced at $13 (their most expensive plate on menu). Maybe I'll just stick to the usuals next time (garlic chicken, beef stew, etc) that were priced at $9 for regular plate. I enjoyed the many sides offered from the lunch wagon had and you need to go early before the food runs out. I tried the prime rib, and it came well done. A sin, IMO. Not only was it way overcooked, it it was dry, and it came with this funky au jus that was thickened with some starch, another sin, IMO. The prime rib was so dry and overcooked that I ended up throwing half of it away. The potato mac was disappointing because it had one piece of potato and a lot of mayonnaise. It should be called a Mayo Mac salad. I also tried their chili a month or so ago, and it was so watery and salty, with little meat and beans. I threw half of it away because it needed four scoops of rice to cut the saltiness; one scoop did not do it. I dislike giving Nicky's a bad rating because the person running the wagon is an incredibly nice and friendly person--Exceptionally so! The best! The best thing about Nicky's is Vicky, and second is their low prices, definitely not the quality of their food, but their Hawaiian Plate is good. Plates come with a choice of starch and a salad. The starch is white rice, fried rice (type varies), and a noodle (type also varies); salad is toss or mac. Most items have a choice of mini or regular size and not many items, if any, are over $10. FOOD: -Roast pork. Tender, juicy, and delicious. Also a super generous portion. I eat a lot (trust me), but both times I've ordered this I've still had leftovers. -Steamed sea bass with ginger & soy sauce. Everything was as it should be. -Teriyaki meatballs. One of the tastiest teriyaki sauces I've had in awhile. -Garlic chicken. I wish it didn't have bone in, but it wasn't too difficult to eat and was still tasty, so I'd get it again anyway. -Boneless kalbi. I always like Kalbi, but don't like dealing with the bones. So it's always a treat when someone offers it boneless, and the quality of meat was great. -Braised beef. Last time I was there I had a braised beef that was in gravy that had mushrooms and some kind of wine sauce. It was delicious. I was on my way to pick up Korean food when I saw the line in front of Nicky's Lunch Wagon, so I stopped and lookedout the menu. Nicky has a lot of choices from Hawaiian Plate, spaghetti and fried chicken and BBQ boneless ribs. I got the chicken papaya with kalua fried rice and tossed salad. The chicken papaya was delicious and the kalua fried rice went well with the chicken papaya. $8, no tax. That's a good deal. It's hard to find a plate lunch in downtown Honolulu for $8. Too bad these lunch wagons aren't in downtown every week. It would be nice to choose between multiple lunch trucks serving different types of food instead of guessing which lunch trunk will be here on Thursday during lunchtime. This is my favorite food truck on Mililani street, just ignore that it's often the only food truck on Mililani street. Let's just skip the minutiae. In a financial district of $10 plate lunches and $7 minis which leave you hungry at 3:30, Nicky's Lunch Wagon offers a plethora of relatively inexpensive, hefty plate lunches with options for more petite dining choices, all for $9 or less with many regular size meals priced at an affordable $7. I personally tend to stick with the beef stew, hamburger steak or garlic fried chicken as those are all $7 for a solid amount of main dish, two scoops of rice/fried noodle and a tossed or mac salad. I've never had that "this feels light" moment that is increasingly becoming common downtown. That's not to say that Nicky favors quantity over quality. Her fried chicken is crispy yet moist, the beef stew has good chunks of meat with a savory stew sauce, and the beef patties are big. I've tried to corned beef and cabbage but I'd pass on it in the future as I can make that better at home and Nicky's were thin slices, where I prefer thick corned beef. My old boss loved Nicky's lamb curry. There are plenty of options, but nothing vegetarian or vegan. Nicky does run out of food, so try to avoid going later in the lunch cycle. Service is quick, but there's usually a short line even though it's popular among the public employees and private sector workers who spend their days toiling in the nearby offices. Tourists visiting the King Kamehameha statue or Iolani Palace will patron as they see a line and assume the food is good. For the price, location, and service, Nicky's is the clear winner of my favorite Mililani street food truck competition. read more
