They made sure everyone could learn at their own pace. They emphasized safety and getting comfortable with all the diving skills before moving on. We had a trip with some diving planned shortly after completing our certification here and I felt like I was really well prepared. Great customer service too. All your gear is provided with the open water certification course so you don't have to pay for rentals on top of it. Brad also recommended gear for my fiancé and I when we were ready to buy and I trusted his recommendations. There was no upselling, just honest recommendations based on experience and what we said we wanted. We're hooked on diving now so we'll definitely be coming back and doing more courses here!

Someday, when I'm adding to my fleet of boats, I will acquire a beautiful Pygmy boat. I'm an avid…read morekayaker, but I love the lines of Pygmy wherry. I also crave using a Greenland paddle on one of my long paddles in the Columbia. The paddles sold here are works of art. If my Portland-made Saltwood paddle were just a couple of years older, I could justify the purchase. Today, visiting this shop / workshop was a day to dream. The boats are all beautiful, and I have spent hours with their wonderful, well-written catalogue, wondering which boat would best meet my needs on the Columbia River. The boats are sold as kits and require about 65-80 hours to assemble. Someday, I will be a proud builder of a wooden boat. Alas, for now I have no garage to build or store anything. If you happen to be near historical Port Townsend, pay Pygmy Boats a visit--there's a lot of interesting things to see in and near the shop. And the ice cream up the street is a pretty good second place to a Greenland paddle.
