Gorgeous and unique, a feast for the senses, a little shop with a big personality. I first noticed…read morethe window displays and wondered, what kind of place is this? An art gallery? A magic shop? A creative space? All of the above and also stationery, jewelry, accessories, art materials, books, and more. This shop is owned by two sisters and opened in November 2022. They host workshops in a small back room. There are so many lovely things to see. I can't wait to go back again. When I visited in October the windows were hung with marigold paper chains and mannequins dressed in vintage Halloween masks. It was an unexpected surprise on my day trip into town. I only came away with some hand dyed silk ribbons and washi tape, but so many fresh ideas as well.

Wow. What an ah-mazing shop! Handcrafted items from both local and international artisans, unusual handprinted papers and cards, antiques, one of a kind jewelry . . . jeez, pretty much one of a kind everything! And at every price point, so you're sure to find a treasure to take home with you. The delights continue into the cozy classroom in back, featuring a chalkboard with upcoming classes. And these are not just the usual classes ~ one that caught my eye was titled "Small Shrines", which sounded SO intriguing. I was able to speak a bit with one of the owners, Catherine, and she was just lovely, and so so knowledgeable about the artists they represent and the items they sell. If you're in Port Townsend, come visit this shop. If you're not in Port Townsend, make the trip! You're sure to find something to make you smile. So happy I found this shop on my day trip to Port. Can't wait to come back and see what's new/old (lol).

YES! If you haven't…read morechecked this new shop out, you really should. Soybased candles, rugs, artful objects and (you heard it here first) virtually indestructible air plants. You are going to ask yourself about the Airplants. You are going to want to know that the things, although quite alive, are virtually indestructible. Will make a house look like a home even when you aren't a great housekeeper. And that even those of us with wanderlust are unlikely to kill an Airplant when we forget to water it. Or when we have been away from our piece of terra-firma for awhile. Airplants don't need soil. They don't really need much water, except, perhaps for the occasional misting. And they really don't need a whole lotta loving. Just a kiss and a promise will do. Seagrass has 'em...Heather will "plant" them for you in a glass terrarium. Throw in a bitta moss and a piece of driftwood. Sort-of the ultimate gypsy-vagabond's bouquet. Solved a problem for me, they did. Now if I could just train my airplant to vacuum and wash the dishes. Or at least make the bed and fold the laundry. But enough of these reveries...gotta go...Adventure is Out There! (Thanks, Heather!)

Despite the name, you don't have to be "coastal" minded to find some nifty things. Like Sunset magazine in a small scale storefront. We'll be back when in the area again and hope this gem is still around.

Unique, delightful, helpful, EXCELLENT, and aesthetic AF. This place is both inspired and…read moreinspiring. I was worried it would be pretentious or I would feel not-cool-enough as a middle-aged grey person to feel comfortable, but the visionary person who brought it into existence and the whole space are notably warm, welcoming, kind, and receptive. While this business is multipurpose / has more than one function and mission with retail variety and community gathering and education, it manages to not be confusing or overwhelming to navigate. As a neurodivergent person who often gets social cues wrong and takes things too literally, I am always wary of and super-confused by retail shops that have seating areas (ex. PT's local kitschy pot shop) and wonder if they *really* intend for people to make themselves at home to read a book or whatever, but "the parlor" in KALMA really feels like a place anybody is welcome to sit and pick up a book on any number of fascinating and/or stigmatized topics to read . I was also worried KALMA would reek of that headache-inducing power-incense smell so closely associated with goths, but not to worry -- the space is sensitive to people's need to breathe healthy air. The clean atmosphere is another thing that sets it apart from the kinds of retail spaces you most often find with lounge-around space (game stores, old-school video rental places, etc.); the parlor in KALMA does NOT have that second-hand loveseat with ten-years-worth of stale fritos and old socks smell infused into cracked naugahyde cushions. Everything about KALMA is beautifully, mindfully, and even whimsically executed, including their web presence. It is rare and special for something to be so well done without feeling snobbish or humorless. This place is a real life-affirming resource and sanctuary on top of being a gorgeous and fun place to browse and shop, all while gently-yet-deeply meeting an under-served need we all have to grapple with our mortality. I've only gone in there once but feel it is a real treasure where accessibility and service are valued and offered with sincerity. It is a privilege and a blessing to have this business in Port Townsend. Really makes me feel ministered to on a bunch of different levels - I couldn't be more impressed.
