I love Quimper Mercantile. I make a point to stop by here every time I am in Port Townsend. They have everything. Need kitchen stuff? They have it. Need coats or hoodies? They have options. Forgot pajamas for your vacation? They got you. Want to get your kid a new toy so you have a few moments of peace? They will help you out. Want some hiking shoes for the state parks nearby? Look no further. Impromptu camping trip? They have what you need. What about a souvenir for that friend that you promised back home? They stock that too. Seriously, everything. On top of that, the staff is super nice and helpful, and the selection of all of the above is actually pretty big. And they are local. What is not to like? Quimper is definitely one of those ons stop shop places. There is everything from Kitchen gadgets To bed and bath supplies, fishing and camping gear, clothing... the staff are very helpful and even helped me track down dome fudge in particular that we were looking for. What impressed me most was the quality and variety of survival and camping gear. Some unique items I had never heard of and wonder why they weren't more readily available in other locations... oh well, all the more reason to return. read more

Beware of unexpected parking fines over $100 if you want to browse at store. Apparently, one has to pay for parking in front of store and be recorded on secret camera's documenting your car and license plate. You are allowed to appeal your fine but unlikely to succeed as you are dealing with an unsympathetic out-of-state contractor and a store (who are sympathetic) which is unwilling to stand up to their landlord and fight for their customers. --an unhappy, former customer read more

Aggressive parking enforcement targeting disabled patrons Be warned if you shop here: this plaza employs an predatory parking enforcement company (PRRS) that is actively penalizing disabled patrons. I spent a significant amount of time shopping inside the mercantile business here on May 30th. Because I am disabled and use a valid state-issued parking placard, I was completely unaware of a hidden parking fee structure. When I received a notice, I submitted a copy of my official disability placard to PRRS expecting a reasonable dismissal. Instead, because I paid cash for my purchases and don't have a digital bank statement to prove I was a customer, they are refusing to drop the fee. It is incredibly disappointing that local businesses and property management allow a predatory contractor to harass disabled customers who pay with cash. Demanding bank statements from disabled patrons just to park and shop is a terrible look for everyone involved. I have reached out to property management to resolve this. If you are a disabled shopper, a senior, or prefer to use cash, take your business elsewhere until the property management reins in PRRS and fixes this. read more

Great mercantile, has all you could ever need at fair prices. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful with the notable exception of Anne. She must either hate her job or hate people as her surly attitude is very apparent. If you see her just pick another cashier as she will quickly ruin your shopping experience here. She is in the top 5 of the worst customer service providers I have ever meet. read more

I love shops like this that have a little of everything for the community and is also a great shopping spot for out of towners- like myself. I picked up a canvas tote for shopping, Seattle chocolates, a cute hat and magnets. They had clothing, sporting goods, art supplies, shoes, hats, local art and so much more! Any time we need little knickknacks, we come here. They have great souvenirs to choose from. Lots of camping/outdoorsy items, clothing, shoes, kids games. Just about what a small Academy would be like but for a little town. The employees are friendly. They are a little on the expensive side but that's what you get when you visit a little tourist town. read more

Quimper, Quimper, Quimper I love you. I don't know why I only gave you four stars two years ago, that was so wrong so please forgive me. You are the only place in the whole wide world that I look forward to when I land in Port Townsend for some really unique stuff! Here's my list: - waiter's corkscrew. and I mean, solid! I've looked high and low for years and years for a solid, well constructed, waiter's corkscrew. How hard can it be? Apparently, super hard. Not even Amazon had one, but Quimper came to the rescue! - flowery cool unusual stuff. I mean, I don't know who the buyer is, but he/she/they rock! I purchased a cook's apron with cherries on a turquoise background with lace and frills...Rockabilly, baby! And for you tourists, yes there is a toilet...hallelujah!! YAY. One advice to Quimper, though...please water the dying air plants in the back of the store! They are called 'air' plants but still need moisture. Seeing those dying tillandsias sends shivers down my spine. read more

This store is absolutely fabulous. It is a must stop while in Port Townsend. Walking through the doors makes me feel like I just stepped into a time warp - back into the days when there were Woolworths, five and dimes, and well, mercantiles. There is a fantastic assortment of goods here, but all great brands. Life is Good, Keen, Columbia, Prana, Melissa and Doug, you name it. Prices are usually great on outerwear and they actually mark brand items down that you don't normally see marked down (Columbia rain jackets for 28,99). I never fail to find something while here. Went here for the first time while camping in this town and boy oh boy do they have the best of what you need. Lots of kitchenware, hiking gear, fishing gear, camping gear, mens clothes, womens clothes, Burt's bees balls and lotions, port Townsend decals, bags of chocolate covered goods right to the left as you walk in, if you forgot something from the house you may as well find it here. I thought it'd be much smaller from the outside view but I walked into many different sections of goods. Espresso shop on the left side of this store makes it a perfect morning stop for a cup of tea and shopping. read more

You're tired of carrying a whole box of cereal for your baby to snack on and WHAT DO YOU KNOW? Quimper has some adorable on-the-go children's snack boxes. For that matter, eating in restaurants with three kids has reminded you how much you're missing your kitchen, so you linger just long enough in Quimper to find new egg cups. This is one of those places, when I come to Port Townsend, I can't miss. All of my family can go in and we all find our own little section. Big selection or should I say variety of things. Probably the best art supply options, but nothing like a michaels. Also has great outdoor and sporting clothes section. My only criticism is their card selection is horrible. If I could leave -5 star rating I would, after working all summer long 6 days a week, 15 hour days. I finally got some time off, my mother and I decided to go down to port townsend for the day to spend the day together and hangout. We came across this mercantile store. Because it was colder than what we dressed for we had decided to go look at the stores jackets. While we were browsing the jackets/looking in the mirror. It got extremely crowded in the women's section so we took the jackets we were considering purchasing to the men's section to see if they had other sizing options and a free mirror. We noticed that one of the employees was following us around the store, she proceeds to approach me and ask if she can take the jacket that I'm holding to hang it back up. I told her no, it was an option for me to buy. I even emphasized that I was having a difficult time finding sizes that fit me properly and if I was going to spend good money on a jacket I wanted it to fit right. She looked at me and glared, walked away and proceeded to hide behind clothing racks and follow us around. Out of nowhere my mother is approached by this taller older gentlemen and he proceeds to harass her to take her shirt she was going to purchase. At that point, we were super uncomfortable my mother handed the employee (the gentlemen) the item due to the fact of us needing to use the ladies room, as we are using the ladies room, the door opens abundantly and low and behold it's the female employee yelling "did any of you ladies sneak or bring any merchandise into the bathroom??" I begin to answer her and said "no, we did not." As we are exiting the bathroom, she is waiting outside the restroom door for us holding a hanger in the air, begins to harass us about what happened to the shirt that was on the hanger. My mother replies "I gave it to gentlemen to hold, while we used the restroom" she turned and walked away. I glanced over and said "we are not stealing anything, please leave us alone" she walks away and we just grab our previous items and checked out. At this point we are humiliated from being followed around the store, into THE BATHROOM and being questioned over and over. We have never stolen anything in our lives, this whole experience was rude, dehumanizing and extremely inappropriate & disrespectful. Amazing merchandise but horrible employees. Will not return. Its a plain, homespun community sponsored place which has opened its doors to the public during the past week. Quimper Mercantile occupies a large store front on Water Street left vacant by the departure of Swains. Swains had been the place to go for almost anything; when Swain's doors suddently closed, there was a gigantic hole left in this community.Where to buy heavy socks? Where to buy bluejeans, jack knives, fishing gear. Where to go for shoes, boots, raincoats, frying pans? Ah, but you don't know Port Townsend if you think the community was going to cry in its beer over the loss of its general store. Folks got together, set up the paperwork, sold shares in the up-and-coming business. Talked it up among their friends...and... Tah Duh! (Asked and answered: Two pairs of wooly socks, three packages of climbing carabiners which I plan to use to clip heavy-duty canvas to a chainlink fence as a windbreak. ) I also noted half a dozen other items which would prove useful as we set up the house for another Northwest winter....I'll purchase these things in the next couple of days. Quimper Mercantile is going to be a success in this community. Because it mixes practicality with good value and artfulness. Its just what the community needs...but then again, why shouldn't it be? Great mix of everyday items and unusual gifts. This store has become a weekly family excursion. Now we don't have to make the trek to Silverdale to get towels or shoes. And the other Port Townsend stores and restaurants make for a much better shopping experience than any mall. We were excited to see what this store was all about. They have toys but do not want kids to look, touch or breathe anywhere near them. The owners acted like our family coming in was a huge inconvenience and were extremely rude to my kids and my husband. We were there with money to spend. A fun little outdoorsy store with some local crafts, good outdoor gear, etc. A replacement for Swain's they're not, but in the long run the community will probably benefit from the place. I personally think they need a few more price-points for clothing (in other words, balance the expensive outdoorsy brands with a few cheap one's too, so those without lots of money can shop there instead of driving to WalMart). Quimper Mercantile provide an excellent service for the community and travelers. ;-) read more
