College Mart Flea Market - First time visiting the college mart flea market. Defiantly got some finds!

College Mart Flea Market

It was a glorious Sunday and I was looking forward to a good day for yard sales and junking. I had…read morea tip about a Sunday Only flea market in the old Slater Mill building in Jewett City. Having been up and down Eastern Connecticut along Route 12, I was not holding out for any pots of gold for this venture. But the day was so nice and the drive out along 138 West was worth the time I was spending. When I got there, parking was good and once inside there was the ever present old mill smell. Not enough ventilation to get rid of the damp musty aromas. Like all of the present day Flea Markets in and around Rhode Island, they feature a lot of the types of things needed for the modern trailer park dwellers. Fake and Faux knick knacks every where. Townie Goth Kids, Grannys selling their stuff, Bikers and a few skilled junkers all mingled together. The floor space inside the mill is just tremendous. The top floor of selling space occupies about two thirds of the building footprint while the lower level has almost the entire floor. So as my picture in the profile shows, I have an older Victorian home that is mostly original so I am always looking for period pieces that work in the late 1800's decor. They had a pretty good selection from about a dozen vendors. Usually you have one or two super vendors who know their stuff and show it well and then the other 200 nudnicks who think they have good stuff. I scored three early 1900s 36 ton screw jacks for a floor leveling project for $100 all in. Jet makes the same thing new for $120 each plus shipping. I also picked up a Flemish brick hammer for cleaning mortar off of used bricks for $6. There were also three vendors selling 70s vintage stereo compnents who had a very decent selection. Lots of old corner and farmer cabinets. Tons and tons of gardening tools and hardware. And tons of just cheap junk not worth filling a dumpster. They have bathrooms and a 'cafe'. All acceptable. If you plan to make the trip have a list and about two hours. You can really find a few gems and some really nice pieces. There was a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk in the basement that was complete except for the outter leather straps. The same model sells new for $45K. The only problem was it was buried in a corner so you have to keep a sharp eye and take your time.

Love visiting here on an afternoon with nothing else to do. You can get lost in here for a few…read morehours if you're really looking through all the treasures. Highly recommend this flea market if you're looking for something to do on and afternoon during the weekend. Vendors are friendly, prices are reasonable.
