Went today because I wanted to get myself one of those creme brûlée cinnamon rolls. After waiting in line that was longer than usual I was well prepared to rattle off my 5 second order. The cashier comes to the front after some time and greets me then tells me "You can wait 30 more seconds" completely unwarranted. I left immediately after that. Then I headed right down the road to Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery. I had their mixed berry scone and their cinnamon roll. Absolutely delicious and crushes the ones at Ocean Side. read more

We just finished eating our lunch, and the buzz was where to go for dessert . We ended up at Ocean Side Bakery. Paul C had picked up the lunch tab. So, I decided to get the dessert tab. I cut in front of Nadine C and told everyone that dessert was on me. The person was very pleasant and patient while taking our order. I was happy to see smiles on their faces as they were eating the pastries. As for me and my wife, we decided to take ours home. Our pick was the Guava Bar and Banana Bread. The Banana Bread was slightly dry but went well with ice cream we had at home. Gauva Bar had a good crust and flavorful layer of guava. New French bakery in Chinatown. Sounds like they are a staple at the farmer's market and this is their brick and mortar location. I'm a sucker for the smell of freshly baking bread and pastries. So when I was walking down Smith street this morning, I had to stop at Ocean Side Bakery to see what smelled so delicious and to try a few tasty looking items of course. Very small bakery. Items and prices are in the shop window. Other offerings (like coffee drinks) are posted on the door. The cashier/register is in the doorway. I'm pretty basic in my dessert tastes, so I opted for the pretzel croissant and bread pudding. But there were numerous other offerings like freshly baked baguettes, baguette sandwiches, banana bread, guava bars, tarts, etc. The croissant was perfect but the bread pudding was very dry (sadly). Still want to try some of their other items the next time I'm in the area. Maybe something savory. Very friendly staff. Support local businesses! read more

Cutest lil neighborhood bakery. It's mostly grab and go but at my most recent visit it looks like they're constructing a steet side wooden patio for tables/chairs which will be a nice addition! It's a small bakery on a quiet side street in Chinatown so perfect for sitting out and enjoying your baked goods and coffee. I like the wide selection for breakfast, including both savory and sweet options, and even some made to order hot items like croque mousier and other egg based sandwiches. It's mostly French influenced, offering even canele, but they also have classic American favorites like cheesecakes and brownies. Everything I've tried has been decent, my favorite so far has been the Swiss horn though. Super flaky crispy layers with a sweet custard cream inside. Reminds me of a Boston lobster tail! Their breakfast canape is actually a very large open faced toast which was surprisingly easy to eat on the go. The mushroom/gruyere/egg was 8.50 and quite filling. Will definitely return!! read more

Thought this cute, hole in the wall bakery would be promising. Unfortunately, I was super disappointed with the canele and cube croissant! The canele was tough on the outside and raw inside--liquidy and had a lumpy consistency with a hint of undercooked egg. On the other hand, the croissant was shockingly tough on the inside and super dry on the inside with no buttery flakiness, flavor, or texture! I didn't finish either and was really sad about it. Maybe it was just a bad day or bad batch? Or possibly these were leftovers from yesterday, which would explain the textures. I was really surprised that they were so unpleasant as they look like they'd be fantastic! Prices aren't bad, so maybe I will return for another go. read more

New bakery in Chinatown, where the original Ottocake used to be (IYKYK) and around the corner from what was Char Hung Sut. Paid street parking only, but there were a bunch of open stalls when we came mid-morning on a Tuesday. This place is small. In fact, you can't even step inside. All the yummies are along the window facing the street with their names and prices written in the glass. The cashier, who is the owner and the sweetest woman, is in the open doorway. She can help you make your selections since there's a variety of canales, croissants, tarts, and other baked goods to choose from. Additionally, sandwiches and drinks are available and written with descriptions on the board hanging on the door. My mom and I ordered two boxes of goodies, and what we've eaten so far as been delicious. My salami and Swiss croissant was excellent...I could equally taste both. I especially loved the coarse salt grains on the top and the pickled green thing (bell pepper?) tucked inside to give each bite some tangy brightness and crunch. The only thing that would have made it better was if it was warned up so the croissant was crunchy. But, that's on me and not wanting to wait until I got home to toast it. Cream puff was delish, too. The puff was light and airy, but held together with every bite. Lots of light, whippy cream, which had the perfect sweetness IMO. The canales...loved the filling, especially the creamy chocolate ganache and the tart lillikoi, and how moist the inside was, but missed the crunch of the outer sugar coating when eating it fresh out of the oven. read more

On the hunt for these delicious croissant cubes I've been seeing on social media. Was planning on visiting them at the farmers market but learned they now have a physical location! Since it was a far drive (for us) we got one of everything . Got home and demolished the following (all were delicious and we'd make the trip again for them): ham and Gruyère on pretzel croissant, pain chocolat, guava and chocolate/pistachio croissant cubes, mushroom spinach ricotta danish (?), lilikoi canele, French toast soufflé with an amazing sauce. First time trying and they did not disappoint! It's a cute little storefront with signage written on the display glass, the checkout is literally the entrance to the shop. Lots of metered street parking at $3/first hour. We weren't there quite the hour but didn't want to hunt for other parking so chose the metered. I believe you also get a 10% discount if your total is more than $75 (it was either $70 or $75, pls double check if you're trying to get this discount). That wasn't our intent but it was definitely a anice surprise! Made up for paying for parking lol. Owner was very appreciate for our large order and had her son helping to pack our goods. It may have been his first day and he seemed a little overwhelmed but overall was a very nice young teenager who was trying his best to cram all of our goods into bags and boxes. Just realized we didn't end up getting the focaccia or sourdough. We did order quite a bit and can see how those may have been forgotten as they were on the top of the farther case. Oh well, excuse to go back! Everything thus far has been very delicious, savory and not too heavy. We finished the ham and Gruyère and croissant cubes over half an hour ago and I'm still thinking about how delicious they were lol. read more

Omg! This place was so delicious!!! It's unfortunate they don't have a parking lot or anything.... Food: I ordered the banana bread, guava bar, and pretzel croissant. Each one was delicious! Everything was moist and flavorful. She gave me the corner of the guava bar so it had a nice crust on the edge and bottom. They also make coffee drinks, but i didn't order any. Service: you don't walk in and look around. You have to look inside from the sidewalk through the glass and the lady who works as the cashier/server is at the door. She was really nice. They take credit card with $6 minimum purchase. Ambiance: well, you can't sit and eat. They did have two tables on the sidewalk , but there's no shade so I don't think anyone wants to enjoy their pastry in the scorching sun. Their pastries are not over priced and it's very delicious. I found my new favorite croissant shop! I recently traveled to Europe and Love getting fresh baked crispy and buttery croissants. Lucky we can have amazing bakeries right here in Honolulu! This cute shop on the outskirts of Chinatown has Onolicious baked goodies! I enjoyed the savory bacon mozzarella on a croissant bed. The Almond croissant was perfect balance of soft and flaky with toasted almonds. I was hoping for more guava flavor and sweetness, which I actually prefer my sweets not too sweet in the guava bar but the crust had a nice texture to it. Bump the stars because their croissants are good. I tried pretzel and apple croissants, both are good, flaky. Although I was little disappointed the apple strudels croissant don't have apple slice inside. Avoid canele and latte. This little hole in the wall bakery is "Tre Magnifique "! Lots of French pastries and more! What's helpful is they write on the outside glass what the pastry is and the price. One little al fresco table and chairs,lots of customers doing takeout and the line moves pretty quickly! We found parking in front of the lei stands on North Beretania ,we were lucky!(metered) I wish the drinks were offered in sizes because we just gulped it down in no time! They do serve it with oat milk which is nice because some of us are lactose intolerant. Yelping is a tough job...we sacrifice our diet restrictions for a good review!!!!! Some of the pastries could've used some toasting but I know they are very busy so no complaints here! Just appreciate quality foods and friendly service! Ocean Side Bakery has been blowing up my Instagram feed so much that when a retirement party was brought to my attention and dessert donations were requested, I knew Ocean Side Bakery would be the perfect place to get some dessert. I walked over shortly before 7:00am (though if you are visiting for the first time, do double check their hours) and was already surprised to see some people already waiting in line. As I waited my turn next to the storefront window displaying all their delicious baked goods, I was pleasantly surprised to see the variety of goods they had available for purchase. However, I did notice that the Croissant Cubes and Canelés were noticeably absent...until a whole tray of Canelés were placed in the window. Since I was still behind one more customer, I had my fingers crossed that she would not purchase any, and funnily enough, she only purchased a croissant, a different sweet treat, and perhaps a coffee before heading out. And when it was my turn to order, I asked if I could purchase the entire tray of Canelés in the window (there were 18 total divided by 3 different flavors). The Cashier explained the flavors: Lilikoi, Coconut (Haupia), and Chocolate before promptly prepping my to-go boxes. As the Cashier did that, I could hear the Owner in the background exclaim that someone had already bought out all the Canelés to which I promptly responded that I was sorry and needed it for a retirement party. It was at that moment that either the Owner or another Staff member had responded that I didn't need to apologize to them but to the man behind me since that was why he was visiting. I then looked at him and repeated that it was for a retirement party with a sheepish expression. While the Canelés weren't cheap at $3.50 each, I will say that it is comparable to other good bakeries in the neighborhood and with the quality of ingredients and the overall final product, I would say that these items, while on the more pricey side, are more than worth it. Do keep in mind though that since the tops of the flavored (?) Canelés are more of a jam/spread that you have to be careful when carrying/transporting as it may spill. I was actually surprised that mine were still pretty intact by the time I arrived back to work. Now you're probably asking how the Canelé tastes like and let me tell you...it is the most perfect little sweet treat that looks deceptively heavier than it actually tastes. The best way to describe it would be the perfect bread pudding with a more crunchy/textured outside and a custardy/pudding-like texture on the inside. The filling on top--I personally tried the Lilikoi and Coconut/Haupia--are perfectly complimentary to the Canelé pastry and make for a wonderful little treat. The bottoms of each Canelé also have this caramel crust at the bottom that is absolutely sinful. The last time I had something similar is when I had a traditional Bananas Foster bread pudding in NOLA and let me tell you...the nostalgia of my taste buds! Overall, I would highly recommend Ocean Side Bakery if you have not yet been or are interested in trying out new baked goods. While the pastries are not cheap, by any means, it is again very comparable to nearby bakeries and the quality of each of the pastries is hard to beat. The Canelés and Croissant Cubes also seem to be a specialty of this establishment and I can vouch that the Canelé alone is enough to prompt future visits. Apologies to Romero (if you ever read this) though whom I essentially stole the Canelés from. If we ever run into each other waiting to order from Ocean Side Bakery again, I owe you one. read more

I have visited twice and so far the pastries have been all delicious, albeit, the coconut brownie was a little too sweet for my liking. I could eat the pretzel croissant every day of my life and probably not get sick of it. The service has been lovely both times. My only gripe is that they have an extensive coffee menu, however, it seems like they do not know how to execute it. The cappuccino I ordered took longer than expected and definitely disappointed. It ended up being a lukewarm milk coffee instead. They were kind enough to offer a replacement when I brought it to their attention, however, I opted for a refund instead. Finally got a chance to visit this new bakery in Chinatown! Soooo Ono. We got their croissants - about a dozen of them - and they are baked to perfection. Lightly crispy/flaky on the outside, and soft and warm on the inside. You can tell that they're made fresh. They are quite buttery but that's what brings out the taste and flavors.
