Hello Let me start off by saying that Dr Spaeth and his team are real pros!!!!!!. I am convinced that with doctor's knowledge and experience he will fix it or get you the best referral to treat your vision issues. The first person in our family to make contact with the doctor was my brother Chris, when during mountain bike riding accident he experienced a handful of coarse sand launched into his eyes. The pain was immense and he completely lost vision in one eye, driving with one eye he reached the Dr. Spaeths office, and chris was very happy that all the coarse sand was cleaned off his contact lenses and the sclera and he recovered all his vision back. My eye adventure was much more dangerous, as one morning I woke up with a cobweb floater taking up 33% of my vision, urgent care said it was nothing to worry about and should go away soon, well the floater was still there several days later, so listening to my brothers recommendation I made an appointment with Dr. Spaeth's office asap, turns out i had a detached retina and needed immediate surgery to save the vision in my eye. Heavy? You better believe it, and Dr Spaeth diagnosed the situation correctly and he took immediate action and made a call and got me an appointment at the best ophthalmology center in the country ( just the opinion of many) in Orange California. Not only did the surgeon save my vision (including peripheral vision) my eyes reaction time was as good as usual as i returned to playing competitive tennis. The recovery time was difficult and long and Dr Spaeth was there for me every step of the way. Fast forward to my 90 plus year old mom who has had countless eye infections and has extreme dry eyes that at times were so painful she would scream in pain. (after deciding to ditch the large eye center down south she decided to give Dr Spaeth a try, and I am happy to say she is back normal with very little pain. This place is amazing. Dr. Spaeth gave me my vision back with scleral lenses. I drive from Buena Park just to see him. I literally got tears in my eyes the minute I could see: kerataconus is a degenerative cornea disease which distorts your vision to basically blur. I was hopeless and didn't know if I'd ever see again. Saved every dollar I had to get these scleral lenses and they were so worth it!!! We are snowbirds who spend 6 months a year in Cali. During this trip, I had an issue with my eye. I thought something was lodged in it. At the advice of a close friend, I called Ocean Ranch Optometry, in Monarch Beach. After calling and explaining the situation, I was given the choice of an immediate appointment or one in the later afternoon. I chose the first one. Upon arrival, I realized that Dr. Spaeth had agreed to see me on his lunch break. He examined my eye and told me there was nothing lodged in my eye but, rather, I had an open ulcer. He took the time to draw a picture of the ulcer's location, explain the seriousness of this condition but also assured me that the fact I sought immediate medical attention helped the prognosis immensely. He talked in detail about a timeline, medication and remediation. He set another appointment to re-examine progress. I had that appointment today! His staff greeted me in the same warm, professional manner as in the previous visit....but, this time they called me by name. Dr. Spaeth saw me immediately, evaluated progress and set our next appointment. I feel so confident that my eye health is in good hands. I am so appreciative of Dr. Spaeth and his staff. read more

In this difficult time of isolating and social distancing it is difficult to experience a personal touch but that is not the case with Dr. Spaeth and his office staff. During regular visits under normal circumstances the staff are always friendly and helpful. They greet you like a friend and service is top notch. During this difficult time the office is not open as usual but Dr. Spaeth is still taking calls and giving the same level of customer service. Dr. Spaeth is my hero. He has helped me for over 20 years through one eye problem (not of his doing) and another. Just recently he fit me with a scleral lens in my remainin eye (also not of his doing) and I see better and more comfortably than I have in years when I was using my RGP lens. He has a wonderful and caring and helpful staff -- love them -- oh, and beautiful and stylish frames from which to choose. And he's patient, a quality I so admire and don't possess. This place is really convenient since it's by Ralph's. The staff was friendly and the doctor knowledgeable and kind as well. I was basically in and out right under an hour and that's with dilation and digital pictures. I got over charged but called and they were very nice and said it was a mistake and they'll adjust it. I don't use eyewear so can't comment on the selection. But it was definitely friendly and not pushy. read more

As a keratoconus patient, my eye care is pretty challenging. This progressive cornea disease is one of Dr. John Spaeth's specialties. He and I have worked together over the last four years managing this via schlero contact lenses. Although these are a bit pricey and a little bit of a pain to use, I am continuing to see nearly 20/20 in both eyes and it looks like I will avoid a cornia transplant the rest of my life -- and you can't put a price on that! The doctor was more interested in selling me things then doing a thorough exam. I had my paperwork shredded and will never be back, one of the worst experiences.
