Last week I was referred to Dr. Howell of Ocean MicroEndodontics. First, I was amazed that I was able to be seen that same day because I had 10/10 pain. Shout out to my general dentist for sending me here. The staff was professional (from intake phone call to checking in/x-rays/checking out). Dr. Howell was thoughtful, clear, and honest in her assessment; she gave me all my options. We decided on the root canal route, which scared me - but that fear quickly dissipated in the first few minutes of the procedure once I saw how confident and skillful she was. If you have an Endo issue, look no further. (Here's a tip if you are able to afford it: if given the option to do the mouth scan rather than just x-rays, pay the extra $$ out of pocket because it made the visit a lot quicker than expected because she was able to see the issue in 3D, and it was easier to understand the problem and possible solutions.) read more

I was referred here by my dentist. Dr. Howell was able to see me quickly for a consult, and even better, was able to begin the root canal with my authorization right after the consultation! What really impressed me about her is that after a while of digging in and doing what needs to be done, she stated that she did not feel 100% satisfied and she put me on the calendar for a second session, free of charge, in order to get the job done. I have a feeling that some people would just call it a day and hope for the best, but Dr. Howell showed that she means business when it comes down to doing the job right! She was friendly and very knowledgeable, the procedure was pain free after a couple of shots and I felt at ease the entire time. I was terrified to get another root canal mainly because I have high anxiety and feel claustrophobic. At my initial appointment the backroom staff put me at ease and I didn't want the full xray because of the machine but Dr. Sato said show her the machine and they showed me I would not be enclosed and it only took a minute. The girl was super comforting. For the actual appointment they gave me a relaxer that knocked me almost out and I had my music on. It was over as soon as I sat down. I didn't hear or feel much of anything at all. Dr. Sato had to work a very difficult root from years ago with a prior root canal someone else did. He even found a foreign object in that area of something used years ago. I was going to have to return for another visit but after the treatment was done he said he got it all and I did not have to come back. Even though you have to pay for the xray which was about $210 and the insurance doesn't cover it, it's worth it. And he was fantastic. What makes it better is I just got a check for $65 in the mail they sent me after the insurance balanced everything. That is usually unheard of and you hear about so many offices keeping the money and not billing properly. I would highly recommend this office and physician. Oh and they got me in for both the initial appt and treatment one in no time at all. Amazing! Thank you! read more

Practically painless root canals here! And you won't spend 2 hours or more in the chair. This is all they do. Root canals. With a microscope, believe it or not. Never seen or heard of such a thing. Well, it does exist and they are the best here. Virtually no pain and you are free to go in 60-90 minutes! Look, I've had many fist-clenching, sweating in my chair experiences. I'm through with that and crossing the border for dental work. As it is, much of the work is being re-done here after 5 years of going down south. I used to tell people I had a good dentist in Tijuana but I was fooling myself. It all came and continues to come back to haunt me. Those TJ dental days are over, but now I'm feeling good and teeth are working like they should. read more

I called to schedule a root canal and Dr. Howell was able to get me an appointment the next day. I looked at the Yelp reviews and felt very good about going there after reading some great reviews - some saying the root canals done by Dr. Howell we're "painless". I have had a couple of root canals done before and was skeptical about the painless part, but was hopeful that it would be less painful than past experiences. Believe it or not, but in the middle of root canal, the doctor LEFT THE ROOM......for l0 minutes. I am an 80 year old woman agonzing over all the apparatus hanging out of my mouth and dying to get this over. And the doctor acted as if this was how she ran her business. I guess that don't teach you the importance of treating your patients with care and kindness. It was RUDE. I call it ELDER ABUSE Besides that, she hit me with an extra charge of $200 for an xray she needed. My wife was having severe excruciating tooth pain. She found Dr. Sato herself by reviewing a list of providers in network with our dental insurance & reading yelp reviews. My wife specifically wanted a board certified endodontist. She was very nervous to find a good endodontist in San Diego as we recently moved to the area and this was her first root canal. Dr. Sato was exceptional! During the consult, it was clear he is very knowledgable. He and his assistant made the entire experience very comfortable and pain free for her. Dr. Sheena Howell is personable, kind, listens, is empathic, and is confident. Her team is also great. I needed to be seen for a gum issue and they were able to get me in immediately. Dr. Howell is very friendly, professional and informative. Fantastic care and beautiful office setting. Inviting from the time I called to make an appointment to today when I left my visit. I had 3 D X-rays (recommended) to view if infection was there and get a honest view of the tooth before treatment. It was $200 out of pocket but was very helpful in determining plan of care going forward. I had the root canal done and she did with the microscope which was amazing and it also showed I needed one next to the tooth and more infection. Daya her assistant was very nice and caring. Couldn't sleep on a Sunday night after progressively worsening tooth pain on #3 tooth. Needed another root canal--second in a month. My dentist was generous to look for another endodontist who would accept my insurance. Was able to see Dr. Howell on Thursday afternoon and she and her staff took excellent care of me. They charged $200-300 more than the other place I went who does not take insurance. I love the ocean theme. They had a water fountain on the first level and a stone atrium with a fountain, and off the elevator, you look right to see the Ocean Microdontics sign and office. After the registration, I was taken shortly for the evaluation and x-rays. On x-ray, I could see where my tooth was infected. Likely the reason for my ENT surgery in December. Her assistant discussed financial details. I signed the agreement and Dr. Howell and her assistant took great care of me. In by 1:00pm and was out by 2:40pm. I liked that in using the microscope, she was able to do her work efficiently and not compromise her back. Highly recommended. read more

Dr Howell made a scary root canal seem so simple and painless! Her explanations and care made my experience flawless!

I highly recommend Ocean MicroEndodontics. Obviously, if you have a need for endodontics, you are not feeling your best. The office is well appointed (love the ocean theme), and the use of microscopy entails a better result (as well as implying if they can see what they are doing with a microscope you know darn well the work will be very accurate). The staff is friendly and caring. I feel as if the work done is of high quality (obviously I have to return in a year to ensure all is as expected, but I have high hopes). Dr Howell is a professional, who communicates well, with a sense of humor, and I trusted what she was doing. I initially went in for a consultation to determine if the tooth could be saved or should it just be extracted, and I put a lot of faith in her response. And the aftercare. Oh my! The warm, scented cloth meant to soothe shows a standard of care that makes the thing she inserted in my mouth to contain the area almost worth it (she'll know what I mean when she reads this!). Thank you for taking such great care of #15 and saving it from extraction! So happy this office was recommended to me. It was a great experience from start to finish. They were able to fit me in the very next day, which happened to be Christmas Eve. Dr. Sato was so sweet and very gentle. He spoke to me about Disneyland as he slowly injected the anesthetic into my mouth. Then during my root canal, I put on my headphones to tune out what was happening. I actually fell asleep in the dentist chair. That has NEVER happened to me. Dr. Sato said, "falling asleep in my chair is the best compliment you can give me." His office staff was also awesome. It is obviously a great place to work because the staff are all very happy and pleasant. My double dental insurance covered all but $160 of the $1600+ procedure. I find it interesting that recent patients were able to get in right away. This office was recommended to me by my general dentist. I had been in pain for 2 wks prior and was asked at the front desk if I was in pain. We can see you in 1week. So I endured the pain for an additional week, now total of about 3 weeks. The ladies at the front desk were not very helpful and patient oriented. Requested an "estimate of my out of pocket charges". Unable to provide/ can't provide. No much empathy at all. "Like I said" this is how I was talked to over the phone.The dentist explained everything and that was the positive part of the visit. The injection did not work well(not numb enough) and that last injection felt like it hit a nerve and was very painful. read more

I saw Dr Howell a few weeks ago for some undiagnosed issues I have had for a long time that have been brushed off in the past. She took her time to truly listen to my concerns, did a few tests and after taking the 3D scan we found the problem!!! We had to retreat one of my teeth that had a root canal in the past (twice already) and the previous two doctors still missed a nerve because they weren't seeing the tooth in the 3D image. I scheduled my appointment and I elected to have my procedure done with the oral conscious sedation. When I got there the day of my appointment they gave me my medicine and I got to relax and listen to my headphones while things kicked in. Once we moved into the procedure room, she had a Pandora station of my choice playing, they gave me a blanket and asleep I went! So comfortable!!!! I have a new dentist who referred me to Ocean Microendodontics (O.M.) for a root canal fix. I told my new dentist that I have a new Delta Dental plan and did not have a card yet so gave the front staff my enrollee ID number and Group Plan #. They responded- great, you're good to go! I called M.O. and gave Kantha (sp?) the same information. K. responded "Okay". I went to the appointment at M.O., filled out more patient information but wasn't asked for any additional insurance information. I saw Dr. Sato who told me he wanted an additional X-ray done that was not covered by my insurance. I agreed since I knew that my initial evaluation would be free of charge as per my insurance plan. When I went back to the front office, K. smiled at me and told me "We don't accept your insurance." Really?! What did "okay" mean when I provided my insurance info to her on my first call? I was angry and paid for the evaluation and X-ray on my credit card. When I arrived home and checked the receipt, she had charged an amount $58.00 higher than what I owed. Steer clear, everyone! When my regular dentist Dr. Bonifacio said I needed my first root canal and recommend Dr. Sato's office, I was extremely nervous for my first root canal experience. I was very impressed with the cutting edge technology and pain free process of the root canal with Dr. Sato. It was a very good experience all in all. Afterwards there was only mid to mild discomfort for a couple of days that was easily managed. Sorry, but the cost of treatment is inadequate! I was treating a root canal and the price was $ 1,700. I don't have dental insurance, but why is the price so high? The doctor worked with me for less than an hour, but I paid more than I usually earn in two weeks working as a construction worker. Something incredible, I have the feeling that I was cheated for money, taking advantage of the fact that I have a toothache and I needed the help of a doctor. I'm sad. read more
