This mom and pop shop is AMAZING!!! The couple that run this shop are extremely knowledgeable about all of the fish and plants that they have and even about fish that they don't have. I have a beta fish and the woman helped me to find fish that would be comparable with him as well as what would be the most attractive in a community tank. The man who worked here then showed me the proper way to integrate new fish into a tank and taught me a lot about the health and safety of fish. Fish are supposed to be floated in the bags that they are in, in the tank they are going into for about 10 minutes. You then use a drip method where you slowly drip water from the fish tank into the new fish's current water until the water line doubles. The man from the store made me a dripper out of a cup and fish tubing for free when I said I didn't have one. The couple that own this place care a lot about the fish and it shows. The fish are happy and 100000x healthier than anything you could get at petsmart or petco!!! The shop itself may not be the most organized but the fish are happy and I'm happy which is all that matters. read more

Great little fish shop in the middle of Down Town. It's hole in the wall gem. This shop is good for picking up fish and Feeder insects. They have giant meal worms and large sized crickets. The feeder insects are healthy so if you are looking for feeders for your Spiders or Reptiles this is a good place to stop by & grab a bag full of bugs. Over the years we have picked up a lot of feeder insects & several fish from this shop. The couple who own the shop have been quite helpful to my kids on choosing fish for their tank... They have a small but very nice selection of Beta fish, Sexed and marked which makes it easier for kids to figure out on their own on which Beta to purchase. read more

Bought some cherry shrimps here, they're VERY red and were quite inexpensive (1/3 the price of the other Ocean store nearby, which is awful in a lot of other ways). They've also got a whole tank of plants, with labels, at very reasonable prices. read more

I love this place! Since starting back up with the hobby a few months ago, I would say 90% of my fishes comes from this place. A mom and pops store that has all the basic needs for starting a fish tank. The couple are very nice and helpful. All their fishes are healthy and in good water, I have tested the water. The prices here are very cheap compared to most SF aquarium stores. Communication is fine for me because I speak Vietnamese, but I can see why other people might have a problem. The neighbor hood is less than desirable, but overall I love coming here to buy fish. read more

I always wanted to own fish one day. I always wanted to have a betta fish too! I walked pass by this small fish store but never walked in until August of 2017. Its a decent set up for a small store owned by an asian couple. They do not speak English well so luckily I was able to understand them with my experience. But all in all I am grateful for this store as it is only 3 blocks away from where I live in the Tenderloin. I bought my first Betta here, Boujie. He was one of a few Bettas that was in good health and swimming around in their small cups. I am so happy I adopted him from this store as Boujie has made me a happy betta fishkeeper. I have gone back several times to purchase basic necessities like aquarium salt, aquariums ornaments and plastic plants. Truthfully, I had one bad experience with this shop. I bought two one gallon Aqueon Mini Bows and when I got home that day in August, realized that one was broken. I was livid. I went back there and they were hesitent to either refund me or exchange the broken aquarium. I told them that I did not damage the aquarium myself and that he checked the item before I left. With that said, whatever happened we did get into a heated discussion...but in the end had to shut up and he exchanged my broken aquarium. Do I recommend this place? Sure. If you want to avoid supporting big stores like Petco and or Petsmart where there is fish neglect and animal mills then I would definately support store like this one. At least I know that there fish are from breeders and or reputable fish farms. read more

Ok so I've been needing supplies for my Betta and none of the pet shops around sell them! Everything is for dogs. What about the fish people?! Ocean Flower was off the muni line so I decided to check it out on the way home. The walk there from VanNess wasn't my favorite - stay focused. Inside there is a small selection of ornaments, gravel, Betta supplies, fish and a bit of driftwood. I've been wanting to get my Betta fish some friends - I think he wants company (but I could be wrong) so I bought him two Harlequins, along with a rock, fish food, and a Betta leaf. I've had the Harlequins for a little over two weeks. They are adjusting well and seem happy. The fish really don't like the freeze dried worms. I'm wondering if they are too old - seemed a little dusty in there. I realized after I didn't think to ask what genders the fish are... we aren't ready for a bunch of little harlequins... so I called but the number is disconnected?! Or it was. I tried five times and it was fast busy. Not in a rush to walk back that way anytime soon, so we will see if I find out! read more

This is a small store who deal with pet food but mostly Tropical aquarium fishes, tanks and fish care products. They have started selling live plants for aquarium's and some Aquascaping items. I visit most of these Aquarium stores in the bay area. The store owner is very helpful and answers most questions. Takes great care of the fishes. Best of all, they prices are very low compared to most other places and in some cases almost half. They do not carry a lot of plants as he has started selling them a few months ago. Of course his plants sell for a lot less than the place of Fillmore, Clement and Cedar Street. The location is not that great(but way better than the one on Cedar) but worth a visit. I had meant to write this review a long time ago. The store needs more exposure. read more

I really like this store a lot. It's right by my job, so I come here a lot, which is dangerous b/c it's easy to find stuff to spend money on. It's pretty awesome that this fish store exists right in the heart of the TL. They have great tropical fresh water fish stock, all very healthy, at amazing prices. They also have goldfish, koi, and some marine fish, plus a small but really limited selection of fresh water plants. Great prices on live and frozen foods, plus tons of dry goods at slightly inflated prices compared to Petco type stores. Minus a star because the advice that you get here at Ocean Flower is not necessarily the advice that will make you the best aquarist, or be most humane (I feel like they definitely push you towards overstocking, always willing to push a sale instead of considering the actual needs of your fish.) If you can do your own research on fish keeping, and know what you need and what you are looking for, you can get some pretty sweet fish (and occasionally plants) at excellent prices. read more

Our weekly grocery list includes milk, eggs, peanut butter, crickets, and mealworms. That's life with a leopard gecko. But finding bugs for Doody Bear (named for his enormous shits, the result of a prodigious appetite) isn't easy. Very few places in the city sell live insects, much less ones in good condition. The last crickets we bought from Petco were barely big enough for an amuse-bouche! Thankfully, Ocean Flower is a lifesaver for lizard lovers in the 'Loin. They have medium-sized crickets and big, juicy, Doody-approved mealworms. Cash only, and they're not closed, as Yelp currently says. read more

On the prowl for a goldfish (a surprisingly difficult task before 11am on a weekday morning in SF) for my company's holiday white elephant gift exchange, I came across Ocean Flower. The staff was super helpful, let me know what I did and didn't need (water conditioner, pellet vs. flake food, etc.) and had me out the door in under 10 minutes. I didn't get the impression they were real experts, and the shop was hardly fancy, but they took great care of me and I'd definitely recommend them for basic fish needs. read more

Just found this place doing a Google search for "live crickets". Don't be fooled by the location or the size. They are super friendly and I could tell they have a great selection. I was only there for a short while, but I recommend them. I'll be back. Their prices for crickets are also cheaper than PetSmart, and I didn't have to deal with waiting for someone to assist me. read more

This store definitely satisfies an aquarist in one way or another. They do have limited selection, but often this limited selection often includes hard to find fish. Additionally, they will ask you (I guess if you're a good customer) what kind of fish you are looking for and they try to get them for you. The store has great prices, and while the couple that manage the store is quiet, they are friendly and helpful. There is another "Ocean" store that I have been to, and they often change their prices, depending on the customer and time. This is something I just do not tolerate. The couple at Ocean Flower are very friendly, and their prices are great. I recommend you do your research before you buy fish here, because the advice is not too advanced. read more

I have been going through the area for years and never knew that a place even existed because of the dirty appearance of the store but I overheard some people at the nearby restaurant so I thought I stop by and check it out. Its a small mom and pop store and I like it. Obviously the selection is limited but I can't complain since this store is in a downtown area. The selection that they do have is not bad which has some pond fish, and freshwater fish. They have supplies such as tanks, fish food and live plants. They have fresh crickets and worms which is a plus for those in need and in the area.I bought a couple of fish here that have became one of my favorite fishes overall. As for advice, I am informed about fish and have gotten some correct advice here but as with any fish store, advice can vary from store to store because different people have different ideas and concepts about taking care of fish so do your research before even asking stores for advice. English is limited here so don't expect a lot. Overall, this is a nice store in terms of fish but not in terms of cosmetics like the saying don't judge a book by its cover and I would come back here again if I am in need of fish. read more

This place is ok. I've bought some nice fancy guppies, neon tetras, and pretty discus here which are all doing very well. The one thing that people should know is that the owners don't speak English very well and hence makes it difficult to communicate effectively about tank upkeep, fish health, bacteria cycling, etc. They have been pretty tightlipped whenever I go in and hardly speak a word to me when I'm picking out fish. Luckily I'm very knowledgable about fish keeping but for those novices who need a guiding hand and helpful advice they can be in for a big disappointment. read more

I would NOT recommend this place to anyone! My roommate and I really wanted some fun little fish, so we went to a different local aquarium and were really disappointed... when I found this one, I was excited because of all the great reviews, so we gave it a try. We both liked the store, and were pleased with the service. We specifically asked the owner, "what size aquarium do we need for six of these fish?" He showed us a 3 gallon aquarium that came with a filter and lamp and a little starter kit. We bought everything he said we'd need, $81.50 all together, and went home feeling good about the transaction. Three days later, all six of our fish were dead and the aquarium looked like a swamp. I planned to lug the whole nasty tank over there and give the owner a talking to, because I thought he sold us a faulty tank. I found out though, after talking to a super nice fish lady at the Petsmart in Berkeley, that our fish died because we didn't allow the tank a week to condition itself AND because it was OVERPOPULATED! We specifically asked this jerk-off owner what size tank we needed for those particular fish... furthermore, we were going to buy saltwater fish, but he told us that you needed to get the tank started a week before you introduce saltwater fish, so if we wanted to put the fish straight into a tank, we'd have to buy freshwater fish. We specifically talked to him about all of the things that killed the fish! This horrible guy set us up for failure! Our poor fish died slowly and painfully of ammonia poisoning because there was too much fish pee and poop in the tank for the filter to handle. Anyway, I'm pissed. I signed up for yelp just so I could write a bad review, and I'm not a very vindictive person. So, if you like being duped and unwillingly torturing and eventually killing innocent aquarium fish, by all means, pay this place a visit. read more

Okay, so I've been a customer many times before but probably not anymore. They are small, in the hood, but they do have things that I need in a pinch. I bought a flowerhorn fish from them for $140 last year. Could've gotten a better quality for the price but didn't feel like driving to Sacramento where a lady is known for quality flowerhorns. So last week I went just to take a quick look. I saw 3 flowerhorns for sale. I asked the man and he asked the lady for the price. $139, $120 and $100. I went today and askes the lady for the 3 flowerhorns. This time she asked him for the prices. Same prices I got the first time. I decided to buy the $100 one because it was a better quality than the 2 more expensive ones. Went to the bank and came back to buy the $100. I was then told it was $120 for it now. This store doesn't get much business so I don't know why they were trying to rip a return customer off. I just told them it was too expensive and walked out. They probably make $100 in sales for the whole week. read more
