I was hesitant to use another aquarium service based in San Francisco due to the distance, but after a local aquarium service gave me very poor advice and wasted a lot of my money I didn't have much to lose. I called ABC Aquatic and spoke with Robert. When I explained the algae problem I was having with my aquariums he was confident he could help. He also explained why the advice I had been given was problematic. I scheduled a service and Taylor came to clean and treat both of my aquariums. He told me that what I thought was hair algae was actually Bryopsis algae that was very difficult to get rid off without the right treatment. If you are new to setting up and maintaining a marine aquarium, I can't recommend ABC Aquatic highly enough. Robert is knowledgeable and passionate about the hobby, and is a great teacher. He has a good eye for aquascaping, and is eager to show you the ropes if you are interested. He helped me set up my 29 Gallon nano, and was able to get me some high quality biofoltration such that my tank didn't even have to cycle. This meant my tank was functionally given a Jumpstart past the first period, which can be rough and full of chemical spikes that can be lethal if you're not careful. I've kept him on to do aquarium servicing, and I'm still learning a lot in terms of pest control and maintenance, coral placement, and general good practices for maintaining a marine aquarium. I've muddled by for years with two tanks in our living room but I often thought I needed someone I could call on for help when needed. A lot of my fishies have died, I could only guess at what I might be doing wrong. Recently I had a problem with the aquarium hose when trying to change water, couldn't get it working. I had saved info on ABC Aquatic and decided it was time to take the plunge. Robert responded to my email right away and confirmed he made house calls. Whew! He came by shortly and did a great job on both tanks. I learned a lot from him about proper care, including pinpointing/fixing problem with hose, and what steps I should take to improve the water quality. An issue cropped up with the filter on koi tank, it was leaking a bit. Robert was able to fix that too with a new ring for the motor. Everything is humming along nicely now and my koi especially seem happier in their new upgraded environment! That makes me happy too! I will definitely call on Robert again if needed. Recently I was diagnosed with a medical condition which was making the care of my Reef tanks problematic. I was panicking, worried to death about what would happen if things got worse for me, because I had nobody who could help me care for them. I decided that in fairness to my beautiful little charges...I needed to break the tanks down and re-home my friends. It broke my heart, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I reached out to Robert and asked him for help, and he was AMAZING!!! After making sure there was no way I could keep them, he reached out to a co-worker (the also amazing Kenneth), who came to my home and moved the tanks for me. I gave the tanks to Kenneth, and Robert found good homes for my fish and corals. I'm still really sad and miss my kids, but Robert has been keeping me updated on my livestock, and sending pics to show that they are happy. This whole experience has meant so much to me.
