I'm not really sure what it is about Ocean Cafe but they all have the same vibe to them (there is another location in Red Bank and the now closed location in Manalapan which I've been to). It could just be the type of food they serve just doesn't appeal to men but every time I've been to an Ocean Cafe location it looks like a scene out of Real Housewives. Anyway don't let that sway your decision to eat here. The food is delicious, light and fresh. This is the perfect place to eat without feeling overstuffed when you're done eating. Prices are very reasonable. This location is small but they've managed to fit a lot of tables inside. The restaurant has a very utilitarian feel to it but it works for a quick bite. There is plenty of free parking in the lot. read more

This place is ridiculous. The people who work the counter do not come off as friendly. The menu isn't displayed easily when you walk in so you are not prepared to order. It's misleading as well, I ordered a salad with chicken and mozz and it came to $32!!!!!!!' That is insane!!! This basic salad I could have gotten a better one from Wawa for $7 and believe me next time I would rather eat food from a gas station then Give this business my service. Where do you go in Shrewsbury when you want a fast, healthy and light lunch? Head over the Ocean Cafe where the service is quick and casual as you grab lunch. This oddly small space can fit more people than I imagined. The tables are nicely spaced where you aren't on top of each other and you can enjoy a conversation with your friends. The tables and chairs are easy to move so if you have a large party, you can rearrange it so that it will accommodate everyone. You can order in the front to go or sit down and a server will come and take your order. My friend and I came at lunch time and before we ordered, we had requested the waitress to please have our order in separate checks. (This is important for later.) Onto the food, we ordered portobello mushroom soup, broccoli with cheese soup (special of the day), grilled eggplant with pesto mayo sauce and shrimp summer rolls with pesto mayo sauce. All came out fairly quickly and the portions of the entrees were substantial. Everything was very tasty. Both of the soups we ordered were cups at $3.95 each. The portobello mushroom had no dairy in it and it came with a slice of french bread. The bread was not toasted but if you can substitute oyster crackers instead. The broccoli with cheese soup also came with a slice of french bread. The broccoli was very blended as we found no chunks of it throughout the soup. The grilled eggplant comes with either a wheat or flour wrap. The shrimp summer roll was one long roll wrapped in rice per cut in half. The side pesto mayo sauce was very creamy and sweet. Oddly filling although I found some of the lettuce in this wrap to be brown or yellow. That shows me they used old lettuce. Upon finishing up, we asked for the check and the waitress gives it to us in one check and stated she itemized it for each of us. I inquired if she could charge x amount on our charge card since we originally asked for two separate checks. She seemed confused and said she wasn't sure. Since my friend and I had different items at different prices, we figured we should just pay in cash up front. We weren't comfortable in giving her the cash in case she got confused further. Perhaps she is new or something. I went up and paid the said amount and then my friend came and paid her said amount. For some strange reason, it seemed to have bugged the person in the front when we paid this way. Great food minus the brown/yellow lettuce but the service is a bit off putting. Not sure if it was just a one time thing but I will revisit it when I am in the mood for a quick salad or wrap. read more

One of my offices ordered from this place for lunch and boy am I glad that they did! Talk about tasty healthy goodness! I ordered the tuna wrap medium rare with the tamarind sauce.. I could seriously eat this every day!! Very light and perfect for the summer especially. The California salad where some of the best dressing I've ever had (thai peanut) rounded out my meal. Very nice size with very fresh ingredients.. and enough avocado.. thank you! A co-worker invited me to Ocean Cafe for lunch and I really enjoyed it! I can't believe I've driven by this gem and never noticed it! The server was attentive despite the cafe being very busy. There were several people having lunch and picking up take out. I ordered the shrimp summer roll and my coworker had the summer salad. We both thought our lunch was delicious and the portions were generous. I also ordered the iced green tea which was very refreshing. Delicious and healthy! I always get the Shrimp Summer Roll. It normally comes with pesto mayo but I switch it out for the carrot ginger sauce. The carrot ginger sauce is amazing! We also got the hummus, you can taste that it's healthy lol. We enjoyed it but would have liked a pinch of salt. My mom loves this chain and frequently visits the Long Branch location but I was pretty disappointed at both the food and service here. I ordered the tuna sandwich (something like $11) and it came out suuuuuper dry. The tomatoes and lettuce were fresh and the bread was fine, but the tuna just wasn't tasty. The butternut squash soup, on the other hand, was quite good. Rich and creamy, I would've rather had a large bowl of that than a tuna sandwich. Service was completely lackluster. The employees just didn't move with any urgency, and it seemed like they didn't really care about your meal. In a strip center, easy to find. We tried the butternut squash soup, white bean with vegetables, the carrots and ginger, the chicken chili and the portobello soup. All are amazing and will warm up your bones! My favorite was the carrot and ginger, and they are all homemade and delicious. read more

Food is pretty good. Staff is beyond unprofessional. They are open until 7. I called multiple times at 6:30 to place a to-go. No one answered the phone. I arrived at 6:45 to place an order in person. The lady told me they stop answering the phone at 6:30 and that she was the manager so there was no point in challenging it. I could not place an order in person because the kitchen also closes at 6:30. Long branch answers the phone and allows orders until they close... is that an arbitrary rule made up by the Shrewsbury staff? The general lack of methods and standards is baffling. read more

LOVE the ocean cafe! The food here is always fresh, healthy and delicious! I come here often for lunch and usually always get the shrimp summer rolls and have to add the Thai peanut sauce! I've been going here for years. There soups are some of the best I've ever had. Just went recently and can't believe a tuna salad on a wrap was almost $15!!! Just meh. Nothing special here. The only thing "Thai" about my Thai chicken wrap was peanut sauce. Aside from that it was just a very scant portion of chicken, lettuce and tomato. What really bothered me was the crew. Both ladies were leaning on the front counter, texting while we ate. One was on her phone the entire time when I was in the cafe, leaning over the soup. Ocean Cafe is my FAVORITE spot to grab lunch on the go. Everything is fresh, consistent, and healthy. What's also consistent at this particular location is the absolutely HORRENDOUS waitstaff. They are so rude and careless. I'm usually a very patient person (I'm also in the hospitality industry) but you texting in the middle of ringing me up is extremely frustrating-I wanted to take the tip I left you for bagging my to-go order straight out of the basket. Luckily I live in sea bright now, so I can easily go to the long branch location instead where the service seems to be much more pleasant. The fact that the girl who seems to be the head of all of the other girls still works there is detrimental to this entire location. We stopped here after church. We were the only ones there because it was 11:15am on a Sunday morning. The hubby ordered a chef salad and I had half soup (chicken chili) and half sandwich (grilled chicken) we were impressed! The food was delicious and was prepared quickly! The prices were reasonable too. This location has limited parking but it was early morning so we didn't have a problem. The server was attentive and friendly. I love this place! I come here a lot, I love the chicken chili and the summer rolls. It's hard to find good, healthy food around! I was in here today enjoying lunch with my mom, and we were very distracted/rudely interrupted due to an extremely rude customer who was yelling at our waitress! I witnessed the entire thing, and our waitress was not at fault, but this woman even told her she wasn't going to go far in life! (How rude, I can't believe some of the people these poor waitresses have to deal with!) I am a waitress myself in the area, and I must say our waitress handled this situation really well, and I will definitely keep coming back for the friendly service and awesome food! I decided to stop here for lunch while in the Shrewsbury area on a weekend afternoon. There were two girls working at the counter that were not very receptive. After looking at the menu for a minute, I stepped forward to make my order. She then told me if you're eating here that she'll serve me (could have told me that while i was standing there). I ordered a "whole" roast beef sandwich with lettuce, tomato and chipotle mayo. It was awful. The bread was completely over toasted. The lettuce was taken out of a salad bag you would buy at the supermarket. Too much tomato and dressing. Maybe three small slices of roast beef on the entire sandwich. I didn't even taste the roast beef when i ate the sandwich. I think I paid 7 dollars and change for it. Never going back. read more

A friend suggested we go here and I'm glad he did. The atmosphere is pretty prosaic but the food was terrific. We both had soup and half a sandwich. The soups (he: chili; me: lentil) were both fabulous, five stars. The sandwiches were both quite good but not as exceptional as the soups. The lemonade is homemade and very tasty (this from someone who is very picky about his lemonade). Service even at high lunch hour was fast and friendly. I will definitely be going back again and ordering out. Great place. PS: I have read through some of the other reviews and am sorry that the Jennifer B, who was disappointed with the juicer policy, rated Ocean Cafe so low. It seems to me that if a place that you otherwise like has a practice that you don't like you encourage them to change it. If they don't or can't for some reason then your choices are to accommodate the practice (come earlier) or rate the restaurant weighing all factors combined. It does not help - IMHO - Yelp readers to have such a good restaurant rated so poorly for a reason that has very narrow application and is therefore not really relevant to most of us. read more
