If I could give it no stars I would. Firstly, they sit everyone within two feet of each other. The servers literally stand in front of their section and stare at you while you eat, which is highly uncomfortable for the customers. Plus, my server wouldn't leave me alone, I'm dining by myself and she came around every two minutes, and then proceeded to give me the bill... I had been there for fifteen minutes. I felt as if I was being pushed out the door because she came back five minutes after that and asked me to pay. I gave her a twenty for a $13 meal, and told her I needed change, and she gave me $5 back and then waited around as if I would give her more for a tip, even though she had already tipped herself by not giving me correct change. As Asian buffets go Ocean Buffet is a 4 star place due to their larger then average selection of seafood (including nigri & sushi) and 6 flavors of hand dipped ice cream (with a green tea flavor) offered on the buffet. Pit against everything else, however, it is a 3 star restaurant (at best); but such is the sad state of Asian buffets. The Asian buffet bar is lowered because of somewhat bland food, depressing and gaudy decor, and typically unwelcoming staff that is so prevalent in Asian buffets across America. At Ocean Buffet, however, the wait staff is on the nicer side; and there is a hibachi grill that is included with the buffet which had the friendliest hibachi cook I have met so far. Pricing there is a meager $8ish for lunch $12ish for dinner which is the cheapest way to obtain a plateful of nigri and sushi. During my two visits (Thursday lunch & Monday dinner) they kept the food bars well stocked and at appropriate temperatures. Overall Ocean Buffet earned a repeat visit during my week long stay in Gainesville due largely to the value that one can get here with an $8 smorgasbord lunch & dessert. The best buffet so far in Gainesville! I've been to the buffet here previously and it was so bad! This is actually an improvement! I really like the interior and the food is always fresh during my last 2 visits. I have been here for both lunch and dinner. The difference for dinner they have fried crabs and crawfish. Okay here goes, first it is a buffet those of you looking for sushi go to a sushi restaurant. This is by far the best buffet I have been too, I have no idea how they make money with the vast selection of food and choices provided. I have been here on several ovations and never waited more than 15 min and that was on a UF graduation weekend! There is an extra charge to have the king crab legs but I have not had them yet. I can tell you that I have seen one man clean out, I mean CLEAN OUT the crab leggs five time and they did not put him out. I've had better buffets, but this one over exceeds the one I went to previously (ahem Szechuan Panda). Anyway, the BFF and I went on a Sunday night and it was crowded. Upon parking, there was a group of patrons outside waiting for their #s to be called. We went in and was told it was a 15-20 min wait. We decided to wait and was given the #11. The estimated wait time was about so, and we were seated. Their sushi bar was disappointing. I was really excited to try Ocean for their sushi but their sushi sucks fish balls. Not enough variety and it was all too simple. Sad panda :( I guess if you really want good sushi you have to go to a Ja-pa-nese restaurant, not a Chi-nese restaurant duh.. But everything was hot and fresh. Well, of course, there were so many people, they had to keep food coming. All in all, it's a typical Chinese buffet. They have all the greasy stuff..chow mein, fried rice, fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried chicken, fried you-name-it. They even had fried frog legs!!!! In conclusion, thank you Ocean for having fried frog legs so that I could taste it for the very first time and know that I will never try frog legs again...ew! read more

Food is really nice, flavory and warm. Sushi are ok and habachi is on top. Service on the other hand oh men. First she bring me my water after I eat my first plate (5min give it or take) I took a 40 min dinner in those my server just came one to take empty plates but she never ask me for refills even when my cup was empty even there wasn't no ice because I ate it. The last and I believe this is terrible (I work in a restaurant) when she gave me the bill she stood there to wait till I pay, I said to me ok she is just patiently waiting like that I don't need to walk and pay. When she took me back my bill she just stood there waiting for me to sign and gave her tip. I really don't like pressure so I put on the side and start drinking (my empty cup of water) lol. She left. After 2 min I get up and start putting my motorcycle jacket well she came and pretty much just ignore me and grab the bill and was steering at the tip. Our family ate here before it was called "Ocean". We came in with low expectations, but were soon pleased to find that along with a change of name, came a change in quality. As a rule I don't eat sushi from a Chinese buffet. However, the sushi offered was fresher than most buffets. The variety of fruit choices was an added bonus, as my daughter loves fruit. All dishes on the hot bar were fresh and hot. Everything looked appetizing, even a few dishes that I have never tried looked tempting. This was definitely the cleanest all you can eat Chinese buffet I've been in here in Gainesville. Other all you can eats have bland tasting food that is hard to tell what it is. Not here, all of the food had taste to it, and there is quite a variety. Since it is still relatively new, it was very crowded and the more popular items emptied out quick. But they also seemed to be replaced a lot faster than other AUCE Buffets too. If they can keep it at this level all the time even after the newness wears off, it will be excellent. Mike read more

I am a patron fan of Ocean Buffet. I have been there... probably 20 or more times in the past 3 years, and NEVER had a bad dinner. Food is always great tasting... their variety is second to none, and the servers are prompt to clear the table of empty plates and refill your drinks. The selection of sea food is superb... sushi is very good, and Hibachi grill is excellent. Can't beat it for the price... PLUS, they offer 10% off for lunch and 20% off of dinner Mon-Thurs with clipped coupons in the local advertisement flyer. Excellent deal for really, REALLY good food. Highly recommended! read more

Their coupons say "not valid on holidays" then whenever you try to use it they mention that it's a holiday, and provide some obscure, not celebrated day of some kind as an excuse to not honor their coupons, which are only for 10% off anyway. That's horrific customer service. read more

Ocean isn't anything groundbreaking in terms of Asian buffets, but I have not had a bad experience here after several visits. Even on holidays like Easter, the wait isn't too long and the food is fresh and keeps on coming out when it's in high demand. The massive amount of food options is both impressive and very tasty--not to mention a darn good price. My one qualm is how the ice cream is handled--the scoopers are stuck in a water reservoir with a flowing faucet and don't really get washed off. It's pretty gross. They ought to get soft serve instead if they're gonna do ice cream. Otherwise, everything is pretty good and I have not noticed food being cold or sitting out for too long, but I've always gone on busy days during lunch time. read more

The sushi here is so much better than Sechuan Palace on 13th, that there is really no comparison. If you're looking for an affordable chinese buffet to go with a larger group then this is the place to go to. Lunch times are only $7.50 a person and kids under 2 eat free. They have a sushi section which is actually decent (this coming from someone who eats a good deal of sushi). Their selection of more normal cuisine could use a few more options, but nonetheless is good. There is a hibachi section as well which makes things a little more unique. The atmosphere is not very authentic and feels much more American than asian.
